Confession: I Didn’t Like Metal Gear Solid 5

BY MOSHE SWEET: It has been about 4 years since the release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Kojima’s swansong for the beloved franchise. The game was met with stellar review by almost every major outlet but now, completely removed from the game, I finally feel comfortable saying that Metal Gear Solid 5 disappointed the hell out of me.

Yeah it was pretty bad for a MGS game

Good game in general however but a p*** poor for a main numbered MGS game

I'm just saddened reviewers couldn't be more honest and praised it to the high heavens, a perfect example where brand name and respect for a studio/industry person (Kojima) can blind people.

Yeah it's shitty what Konami did to Kojima but a disappointing game is a disappointing game

generic-user-name2649d ago (Edited 2649d ago )

I don't believe that's why the game got high scores (plenty of reviewers call out kojima for a number of reasons). I think theres a couple of reasons it got the scores it did.

1. The gameplay is the best stealth gameplay out there.
2. Kojima 'addressed' many of the issues his critics have harped on about for years. Too many cutscenes? Here, have hardly any. Too many codec conversations? Here, have some optional tapes to listen to instead. Story is too 'convoluted'? Then let's put less emphasis on the story and focus on base building instead.

I'm a huge mgs fan, V felt super unfinished and was a disappointment for me, but, taken on its own, I can see why it scored the way it did.

AnthonyDavis2649d ago

Yea MGS5 is an overrated game. Does not deserve a 95 meta.

nix2649d ago

I bought it out of respect for Kojima but I shouldn't have because 1. The money went to Konami. 2. I never went beyond 10 mins in that game. Just couldn't get in and that's a surprise because I just loved part 4.

No Way2649d ago

"a perfect example where brand name and respect for a studio/industry person (Kojima) can blind people." Just like everyone, here, is doing with his new game, Death Stranding.

Sm00thNinja2649d ago

@nix if you played 10 min of the game and decided it stunk you never played it or I dunno. The intro was such a bait and switch it led you to believe you were playing this bad ass game with flaming whales and supernatural craziness and then got dropped in the boring ass desert.

Babadook72648d ago

“Confession: I Didn’t Like Metal Gear Solid 5”

Say 3 hail Kojimas and your good.

@Generic-user-name

"The gameplay is the best stealth gameplay out there."

Can you explain this to me? I feel like Splinter Cell remains the best at stealth gameplay. Why do people feel like, based purely on mechanics alone, that MGS is the more "complete" stealth experience?

Gaming1012648d ago

The game does have too many pointless waiting periods, like waiting for a chopper, waiting to take off, waiting to return to base. There's so much padding to the game length.
Also, the story is not just dumb beyond belief for an MGS game, it's probably the dumbest story I've ever experienced. The ending insults your intelligence so badly that you just want to spit on the fucking disc. The main antagonist is so forgetable and poorly written, he wears a zoro bandito mask for literally no reason, because it does fuck all to hide his identity, he's burnt on every square inch of his body! Of course we know it's him! -_-

The gameplay is where it shines. The best stealth and base management gameplay anywhere. The whole Quiet story started with Kojima saying "Lets see a mostly naked chick" and then worked backwards into the most convoluted mess of a story to justify it that made so little sense, it would've been less condescending if Kojima said "Look, one of your partners is a chick who just likes taking her clothes off and she doesn't blab on and on, she's the perfect woman according to Japanese culture"

UltraNova2648d ago

@ generic

Exactly my thoughts on this IP and MGSV. Its clear Kojima was influenced by past criticism and it shows. This is why he is at his best when left alone to work in his onw "vacuum" and its exactly why I'm so excited about Death Stranding.

As for MGS5, I found it to be an unparalleled game in the stealth game play department and a total mess in story delivery and pacing. And what the hell was that latter half of the game?? I mean why even bother? As for the base building...I felt that this had to be a standalone MGS strategy game on its own, it was incredibly deep and daunting for a guy who hates grind and just wants a traditional MGS story.

i actually enjoyed it, a bit repetitive but was still fun

WelkinCole2649d ago

It had its moments. There were a lot of new and interesting gameplay mechanics like base building and the chopper and companions good and bad. Its a 8/10 game for me and certainly the weakest of the MGS games. I didn't actually mind the open world nature. However the lack of boss fights and a good story was extremely disappointing.

Even with openworld they could still do a great good story like Witcher 3

NukeDaHippies2648d ago

Agreed, what MGS 5 was giving, was not what i liked about MGS at all.

Stanjara2649d ago

I didn't buy it. I finished first back in the day, and third which is my favorite. I would love to play 4th...but I don't have PS3. Maybe with ps5 BC.

BioShockGX2649d ago

Dude you have to play 4. Best s***

Stanjara2649d ago (Edited 2649d ago )

I know! I actually own it now with psPlus... Only need a ps5 BC haha.

Nintentional2648d ago

9 people disagree that you actually DO have a PS3 and you actually have played Mgs4

Stanjara2648d ago

I don't know why. I remember watching all the demos for mgs4...this is not fps. I had the money but they delayed ps3 for so long, and when it came out it wasn't world wide launch. I bought x360 and never looked back. Now in this gen I bought the Pro. I played the usual suspects ( uncharted, last of us and gow3 ) and would love to to play MGS4, so there you go.

Fluttershy772648d ago (Edited 2648d ago )

You gonna hate 4.... I don't love 5... but I see it just as a failed game; but I could never ever force myself to finish 4: I hate it... It is the most obnoxious piece of gaming history that I've ever played... I like the music, the little tune over the graveyard

BigTrain2648d ago

How could you hate 4? It was the swan song to the entire series. 98% of all of the story questions finally answered. Absolutely loved 4.

ShinRon2649d ago

its just as divisive as any other entry in the series. and just as amazing as well depending on what youre looking for.

the series strides forward in gameplay imo more than made up for its lack of cinematic presentation, i do think the extra missions were lacking compared to peace walker tho.

Taz X142648d ago

I'd disagree. While 2 was divisive for the sudden character switch, 1, 3, and 4 were praised by fans for their ability to provide fulfilling story aspects and development to the overall plot, amazing attention to detail, and massive progress in the game play department.

With 1 being the series' first foray into 3d, it did incredibly well. 2 introduced more streamlined game play while keeping stealth at the forefront. 3 introduced the series to open area stealth while keeping the methodical yet tense situations going. 4 brought even further emphasis on camouflage as well as pushed the tactics surrounding gadgets which works with the futuristic tones.

5 gave us a bland open world, a heavier emphasis on action, and a pokemon-esque collectathon to progress its base building gameplay. In my opinion, its the resi 5 of the metal gear series. It felt like it was made more for general audiences, gave us an oversimplified plot which resulted in convolution the overall Metal Gear story and creating plot holes (which could have been slightly mitigated by the final act that was planned, but since it wasn't and only discussed in the collector's edition content makes it kinda moot).

I'll say the same thing I did with Resident Evil 5; it should have been its own unconnected IP to develop its own plot. Both games are a real turning point in the series (RE6 tried to push in the opposite direction and thus resulted in a way worse game overall and MG Survive... smh, that should never have been attached the the metal gear name at all).

ocelot072649d ago

Yup I didn't like it. The open world killed it for me.

TheTony3162649d ago

I agree. It lacked in story, music and boss fights.

XSpike2649d ago (Edited 2649d ago )

Don't get me started on the Story.. Right from the start it was "Why am I creating a custom character?" Yes was a reason for it.. The doctor comes in, I'm looking around the room bored as heck, quite a few minutes later... *cough* OHH your out of your coma! Well Duhhh, I've been looking around for ages... Out of a coma, coughed, noticed an assassin, Yeah I won't try in do anything too warn you.

Goes down the hallway... The assassins dudes throw a smoke grenade around the corner so they can't see me escaping "Why thank you!!" *enters a room, hides under a bed with legs sticking out! AND a dude grabbing my leg* Assassins looking for me come in, grabs the dude grabbing MY leg in kills him, who cares about your target!

*sees all these people just standing around in a hallway* WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!? *goes down some stairs instead..., Assassins don't notice me till I actually get closer to them, blind as hell dudes.. *Goes back up stairs into hallway with the people* They get mowed down.. "Oh so that's why you were all standing their, because you all wanted to get shot"..

Armored truck drives into building, looks quite poor, psycho mantis dude, big whale shows up etc... Yep I'm dead... *escapes a few meters (a little bit more) and looks back at the chaos* Yep I've gone far enough, I'm safe now!!

Ocelot tells you what to do etc.... "Stuff you mate, you just want Snake, me to make you Motherbase so you can betray me you damn b*****d!"

*Quits SP, goes plays some poorly made MGO*

/edit

I TOTALLY believe Kojima made it like that on purpose, to make a "awesome" game but for those like me to be pissed off at how polished the game is but those little things to piss me off to say "Konami are ass holes, I really wish I wasn't making this game for them"

generic-user-name2648d ago

Just so you know, coma patients often show signs of activity including opening their eyes and moving them around. Also if you're in a coma for 9 years and wake up to see an assassin, I wouldn't be surprised if it's very difficult to warn anyone, probably difficult to even speak.

XSpike2648d ago

@generic-user-name Sure, but I was shaking my head up in down like "yeah yeah, I'm listening to you" etc.. If that was all true as well I'm sure you can cough as well... Well he did coughed in made the doctor notice & just seconds later I'm thrown on the ground & standing up etc.. Soo... I'm sure he could of warned him.

Sins of the Father is absolutely legendary. One of the greatest songs ever.

I don’t think I’ve ever quite experienced an unfinished game that was slapped together with duct tape and construction paper to be sold as a finished product, basically making you replay the same missions and include a story that clearly was missing so much of the plot, like I did with this game.

I’m actually shocked that it doesn’t get calls out for this more.

franwex90d ago

It did. But the gameplay loop is still pretty good.

CoPilot: Gaming Chat is an amazing revelation - A true gamer friend at your side

CG writes: In this video, we take Microsoft's Copilot for a spin and talk about gaming and AI influences, and the implications of that. We talked about a possible Metal Gear Solid V remaster, Deus Ex remaster, Hitman Blood-Money mission, and more. Imagine trying to talk gaming with non-gaming friends in real-life and after 5 seconds, they switch off and possibly yawn. Well, CoPilot isn't like that, instead it's like talking to a like-minded gaming fan who is totally on your level. The public version of CoPilot released in Feb 2023 and already it's become almost indistinguishable from a real person.

Metal Gear Solid 5, Nearly After A Decade, Is Still A Timeless Classic

The Metal Gear series, led by Kojima, pioneered the stealth genre, creating a masterclass in storytelling and gameplay.

SimpleSlave721d ago (Edited 721d ago )

No. But MGS5: Ground Zeroes might actually be one of the greatest Game Demo ever, if not the best.

xHeavYx721d ago

I know a lot of people didn't, but I actually liked that story twist at the end. The game was fun and all, but I wouldn't call it a timeless classic.

Cacabunga720d ago

Metal Gear legend stopped with number 4.
MGS5 needed a year or 2 more of development to be maybe among the classics.. it was clearly rushed, especially at the end. The story teaches us absolutely nothing new.

just_looken720d ago

A demo is free that was a $40 cry for help as later we would know konami did not want to fun hideo and his team anymore that is why we got the unfinished phantom pain.

-Foxtrot721d ago (Edited 721d ago )

Meh

Great stealth gameplay but the game was just average.

Bland open world that felt lifeless, the story felt shoehorned in, unfinished story etc. The whole thing was just average to me compared to the other main titled games.

I would have rather preferred it if they kept Ground Zeroes for the main game as the opening and the rest of the game turns into a Metal Gear 1 & 2 remake to bring things full circle.

just_looken720d ago

If you dig around they had old behind trhe scenes of phantom pain vids and books wrote around the time.

Before funding was puled the main idea was to keep peace walker coop it was in the games early builds and that end game were your building your base that was suppose to be metal gear one.

You as the fake big boss was going to make your own metal gear one map aka your base (outer heaven) then me as sold snake use the mode that is in the game invade/defeat the base even fight your current version of metal gear that was in the game but not finished.

So your idea was on the table bit got canned.

CrimsonWing69721d ago (Edited 721d ago )

Like hell it is. That was the first time I became aware of being sold an unfinished game and was blown away about blind fanboys saying it was some perfect game.

Yea, the first few chapters were great until they do that thing halfway and make you replay all the missions again. Then little things like capturing animals but only seeing a JPEG unlike 3 where everything was modeled out. Areas were massive, desolate, and boring to look at.

Game was a massive let down for me and the potential was so high for it. Honestly, this was one of the most disappointing games I ever played. What’s worse is it starts off brilliant. You literally play through until you get to the point where you could tell they just stopped developing and then quickly used glue and construction paper to “finish” it and then sold it. Quite frankly, that’s insulting to consumers and fans.

Inverno721d ago

People have selective memory. This game had huge drama attached to it, what Konami did to Kojima and this game was horrible. Now they praise Konami cause they revived Silent Hill, even though SH looks half arsed too.

CrimsonWing69721d ago

I dunno if they’re getting much praise after the Silent Hill 2 debacle. Makes me scared sh*tless for the MGS 3 Remake…

Michiel1989720d ago

I don't wanna defend konami, but Kojima had 7 years to make the game, it's not that weird for a publisher to expect a game to be finished in that amount of time.

Also no one is praising konami from what I've seen, they're just excited that a Silent Hill game is releasing

CrimsonWing69719d ago (Edited 719d ago )

@Michiel1989

You’re absolutely correct. Look, the dude is a visionary and has brought us some incredible games, but he constantly would go over budget and could never stick to a deadline. I don’t know if people remember the MGS 4 trailers but it became a joke when you’d see a release date and then they crossed it out in the next trailer to give another.

What a lot of people don’t know is there’s a certain amount of money given for development and marketing. When you go over the budget and add additional marketing over the deadline it isn’t cheap. MGS GZ and V were laughable to me for the amount of time he had to develop them and he spent even more time on the engine that wasn’t anything revolutionary to me. I mean, GZ was nothing more than a demo and they released that art like $40 I think, probably to further help fund V. He then spent money for Kiefer Sutherland who did nothing for the character, which I think Kojima just wanted because he’s a fan.

Konami just had enough and said this is the deadline and you’re done after this. It’s business, but fans took it personal. I mean look at this Overdose game he’s been doing.,, like when is that ever coming out?

Michiel1989719d ago

I kind of forgot about overdose but yeah exactly my thoughts. He has made some of the best games out there and definitely deserves time to create his new masterpiece, but it's not a bottomless well.

This is pure speculation but I imagine he got around 4 years to make the game excluding pre-production. If after those 4 years the game is nowhere near being done, the relationship will be strained between them one way or another.

about the konami being praised thing, if let's say blizzard announces world of warcraft 2 today I'll be excited as hell for the game, but that doesn't mean my opinion of blizzard changes only a tiny bit cause they're still trash.

Yeah, it was the only MGS I didn't play and this is coming from someone who got back into gaming after skipping a generation due to MGS4 back in 2008. It just seems to be the complete opposite of the MGS I always knew and loved (1-4).

JEECE721d ago

Yes and no. In many ways in was a great game; there's a very strong argument that it has the best gameplay of any MGS game, and that it is one of the more interesting open world "playgrounds" we have gotten, in terms of how the world operates. But as an MGS narrative, it is pretty far down the list, for many reasons.

Storm23720d ago

I don't think there is any argument. The gameplay was incredible. But yeah...disappointed in the rest. Could have been incredible but...well...we all know what happened...

JEECE719d ago

I don't think there is much of one either but apparently some people found the world very boring compared to the more linear structures of other entries so I didn't make a definitive statement in order to acknowledge the outliers.

DarXyde720d ago

The thing about Metal Gear Solid is that the narrative is what determines which is your favorite because the gameplay had ALWAYS improved with every mainline entry. It's amazing.

If it was gameplay, we'd all say The Phantom Pain, but the story is what truly sets them apart.

For me, that's Snake Eater, which is also my favorite game of all time.

JEECE719d ago

That's my favorite too, particularly if we are talking about the subsistence version with camera control.

Fishy Fingers721d ago

For me, best gameplay, worst, everything else.

Storm23720d ago

Yeah...gameplay was so damn good.
