Reinstall: Final Fantasy VIII

PC Gamer: "Reinstall invites you to join us in revisiting classics of PC gaming days gone by. Today, Andy brushes up on his Triple Triad skills and revisits the vivid world of Final Fantasy VIII."

"But it’s over a decade old"

It's actually two decades old lol.

IanTH2662d ago

I mean, technically they aren't wrong then lol.

I really love 8 though. I wish it didn't get overlooked so often. It's almost a joke. Even the Nintendo Direct had the launch of 7 and 9...no 8. Does that game have cooties or something?

Swiftfox2662d ago

If you want to look at the less cynical and critical side: It would probably be too involved and too expensive to upgrade the character models to look good in HD.

In FF7 the models were limited to the bestiary and the main characters--simple enough to fix with improved textures.

In Final Fantasy 9 the models are much more advanced and correctly shaped to communicate clothing and the like--again you just need to give a solid texture improvement.

With FF8 though--oh dear. The majority of the character modelling is done by simply laying flat illustration rendering on the flat polygon surface. Nothing out of the ordinary till you realize FF8 is the bridge in polygonal characters between 7's simplicity and 9's complexity. Every character in the game would look like trash, and not just the main cast--every Monster and every NPC you see would look like a wood mannequin with clothing drawn on splashed on flat rendered 2D backgrounds. They'd need to go back and remodel everything to account for clothing and texture, AND redo the background for HD, which would be way way too expensive. I mean at that point you might as well just remake the whole game.

I believe the reason FF8 seems to be getting no love is because they can't find the source code.

Funny, really eh? If that's really all it is, and not the speculation coming from Swiftfox. Which kind of just sounds like excuses someone would make. FF8 could be remastered.

Asuka2662d ago

I really wish this would get some re-release. Not even a mention from SE on its 20th anniversary, but announcement of re-release of ff7 and ff9 on the day of instead!? Talk about totally shitting on ff8.

Also I do not buy into the "well all the raw assets are gone" bullshit because ff8/ff9 were developed in tandem so either it's bullshit or SE literally didn't care for ff8 discarded everything while keeping everything for ff9.

Yeah I know I'm coming off as salty but this was my favorite game for those decades.

switch only for 7 8 and 9

remake and rebirth ps5

S2Killinit231d ago

7,8,9 only Switch
7 remake & rebirth only PS5?
Is this accurate? Wish it was all for both.

-Foxtrot233d ago

Why can’t they just do a cool classic collection with VII, VIII and IX in with some goodies similar to what they did with the Pixel Remaster.

FinalFantasyFanatic232d ago

I would honestly go for a Remaster Collection, just AI upscale some textures (there are really good fan mods for that), widescreen everything where possible, higher native resolution, etc...

It seems like a no-brainer to make such a large portion of what was FF's golden age into a collection of it's own.

gold_drake231d ago

this is square we're talking about.

VersusDMC232d ago

Weird that 7 and 8 are together for 40 and 9 is 40 on it's own.

8 should be the one on it's own as it actually has redone models.

jznrpg232d ago (Edited 232d ago )

I have ff8 ps4 remastered physical euro version. They should have put these on PS5 physically so lame.

B5R232d ago

I'm actually so tired of hearing about FFIX. Just replayed it with Moguri Mod earlier this month. That might as well be the definitive version.

Broken Games That Never Got Fixed

While a lot (like way too many) games launch in sorry states these days, a lot of them do eventually get polished up over time fixes. The same can’t be said for these properly broken games.

Worst for me is wipeout 2048.
I got gold in every single player race, made it extremely far into the great online shop platinum was a finger away.. then lost all my online progression. Many players experienced the same and hadn’t been fixed since

joab777294d ago

Cyberpunk and No Mans Sky are obviously the 2
best comeback stories. Cyberpunk is literally one of the best RPGs ever made now.

Christopher293d ago

I wouldn't call NMS broken at release, just under-delivered.

Michiel1989294d ago

junctioning is only broken now because it's been datamined which monster which gives which card and which card gives which items and every single spell to junction with the highest points for each stat. For it's time when that info wasn't readily available it was good, not without it's flaws, but not broken,

-Foxtrot294d ago

Exactly. I never got this because what made it broken was the knowledge of what to exploit.

Playing the game for the first time back then you never had any knowledge to make it so easy.

One minute the Junction system is complicated, the next it's super easy / broken. What is it?

gold_drake294d ago

i mean, ff8 is not "broken" per se, its just that the junction system is too good and easily exploited even an hour into the game. haha

Ashunderfire86293d ago

Star Wars Jedi Survivor is one of them. I can’t get in the Cantina bar later on in the game. The door and other doors throughout the environment is locked off. It is a shame, because I wanted to complete the game, but I can’t until they fix it.

Playstation Icons: Squall Leonhart

Gary Green said: Tempting as it is to dedicate our first installment of PlayStation Icons to a franchise-leader like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, or even Sackboy, instead I’m choosing a character that I, like so many others, connected with on a personal level. He’s a moody, world-weary teen, a proud loner with no time for the drama of others, and yet he’s also a hero just waiting for the motivation to unleash his full potential. He’s a warrior. He’s a leader. He’s the king of internal monologues. It’s time to meet Squall Leonhart.
