Nintendo's Switch magic may be wearing off

When it was first released, Nintendo's Switch console was so popular that the company struggled to ship enough devices to meet the huge demand.

Japanese gaming giant now has a different problem.

EddieNX 2669d ago

It isn't, it's not even two years old yet. And the big games will continue to sell like gangbusters. Games like Animal crossing , Pokemon, Luigi's mansion etc will have massive sales and the Switch should easily eclipse the 3DS, maybe even 3DS and WiiU combined.

darthv722669d ago

It's from CNN. You expected it to be right??? They are kings of fake news.

JunMei2669d ago

Sorry, You've spelled FOX wrong. It's spelled F-O-X.

ABizzel12669d ago

Why can't we simply have a factual and balanced report.

Why does it always have to be so many extremes from the anti and pro media.

starchild2669d ago (Edited 2669d ago )

@JunMei

FOX is far from perfect, but CNN doesn't even try to hide their bias.

Anyway, on topic, the Switch is selling extremely well. The aligned sales for the Switch are ahead of any other console. They also just about tied the PS4 for overall unit sales this past year. Plenty of great games in the future that will also continue to help move hardware. There's also rumors of a new smaller iteration of the Switch on its way. I think the Switch will be more than fine.

Skankinruby2669d ago (Edited 2669d ago )

Lmao you're gonna beat that drum all the way to impeachment aren't you

frostypants2669d ago

Any professional journalist would disagree.

StormSnooper2669d ago (Edited 2669d ago )

@Darth72
CNN is a partisan news outlet similar to every other new outlet we have, except for NPR. However, CNN is NOT “fake news”. The word fake news is a real term and it applies to news that is FAKE, not news that has a political spin with which you disagree with. The most partisan news we have is Fox News which is the closest thing we have to “fake” in the main stream media. Fox News viewers are consistently the most misinformed viewership in main media. As to CNN, they have become more partisan in recent years after taking a leaf from Fox News’ success, but CNN is still the most verifiable news we have in the mainstream, despite being completely partisan. The others are two opposite extremes of MSNBC and Fox.

So please don’t use the words “fake news” to refer to CNN, because then we won’t have a name for actual fake news.

OT: As to the story here, does the article say why they think that Switch is losing momentum? It seems to be doing just fine to me.

SierraGuy2669d ago

@storm your right it's not fake news it's staged news.

StormSnooper2665d ago (Edited 2665d ago )

@Sierra
Whatever you want to call it is fine by me, just don’t call it “fake”.

Unfortunately, in the U.S., news is partisan and our only non-partisan news is NPR which does not accept any payments from any organization/corporation, except recently where trump cut their federal budget thus forcing them to accept some donations from corporations that pass NPR’s testing for being non-political.

As to our other news outlets, they are all inclined not to piss off their corporate/political advertising clients, which means they are careful to report the news in a way that doesn’t adversely affect the companies and special interests that pay them for advertising.

I like how Nintendo fans confidently brag about how they are getting a new Animal Crossing, after Sony just release God of War as one their hyped games.

pietro12122669d ago

I love Animal Crossing! GoW was amazing and I'm looking forward to the other ps4 exclusives especially Death Stranding and Last of Us 2, but best believe I'm also hyping Animal Crossing as well.

SierraGuy2668d ago (Edited 2668d ago )

Lol..what the hell is animal crossing?

Wish they would move on from the birthday cake looking games.

Sirk7x2668d ago

Why can't I enjoy both? Went from RE2 Remake yesterday to Paper Mario. A great game is a great game regardless of style, age or platform.

EddieNX 2668d ago

Doesn't matter if you don't like Animal Crossing, it will still sell twice as much as God Of War.

Animal Crossing is one of those famea that you shouldn't like, but you really do, because its addictive as hell.

G3ng4r2668d ago

Animal crossing is about to sell more than any ps4 exclusive to date, opinions and all.
Just like Smash will.
Just like Mario, Zelda and kart did.
Just like pokemon 2019 is going to.

It's already topped the Wii U within 6 montha and if Nintendo can keep up the momentum it might even have a chance to get close to Xbox One sales.

King_Noctis2668d ago

@sierra

And it was so easy for the Vita. Oh wait.

Shiken2668d ago

It is tracking ahead of PS4 in the US in the same timeframe. Just because they did not hit 20 mil does not mean it is not aelling phenomenally.

But hey, haters gotta grasp whatever straws they can, right?

Nebaku2669d ago

Some Grade A salt from the writer of legendary N4G articles like "Nobody really cares about Nintendo". Hey Prank, question, how well did this little excerpt of yours age?

"as Nintendo fans and the media become ever more desperate in upholding an optimistic facade that clearly seeks to perpetuate the false belief that the Switch is anything but a desperate attempt by the company that is hoping to maintain some semblance of relevancy in an industry that has long since left it behind in terms of game design principles as well as hardware technical prowess."

prankster1012668d ago

Well... It's only year 2. With very few decent exclusives that aren't ports. Early console syndrome.

King_Noctis2668d ago

BOTW, Mario Odyssey, Arms, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade 2, Octopath Traveller, Pokemon Letsgo, Smash Ultimate, Mario Tennis, Super Mario Party, and Mario+Rabbid are not ports, and those games are pretty good.

Benjaminkno2669d ago

They have a perfect strategy of not focusing on graphics and being able to offer decent visuals on a hybrid.

No brainer and a good strategy

Fist4achin2669d ago

I know theyre coming, but it needs more games...

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio24d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing24d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit24d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing24d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
