Nintendo Switch Online Has 8 Million Subscribers

Following a lengthy delay, Nintendo finally launched their online subscription service last September. The Nintendo Switch Online service has been met with mixed reviews from fans as many expected more content by this point in its life. Nintendo's planning to bring more features to the service in the future, but in the meantime, it's still doing a surprisingly good job of attracting paying members.

I signed up for the family plan on there. My kid loves splatoon and we both play smash . It’s Not a bad deal, and with the NES games on there i’m finally gonna beat Zelda 2. That would leave me with just twilight princess and skyward sword left for Zelda games in the main series i haven’t finished.

Playing it now I can understand why the 6 year old version of myself couldn’t beat it. Man that game is tough.

The problem is, even people who think the service is garbage are forced to buy into it just to play even their one favorite game online, so Nintendo will see this and go "oh 8 million subscribers, service must be fine no reason to improve" Even though the single reason I am subscribed is so that I can play Smash and Mario Kart online. That doesn't change the fact that I don't think it's worth the price and that the online is complete garbage, with almost no features. Fix it Nintendo.

I would like to sign up to it but only to save my games but int he end I just dont want to pay to do something that should be free, i hate that i cant even backup to usb. I might try that PC save hack thing i have seen around, has anyone else tried that ?

48 Million Active Xbox live gold Subscribers as of 2016 according to Forbes.

Ricegum2662d ago

Haha. There is no way it is at that amount. PS4 is selling three times as much but has over 10 million less subscribers to PS+?

Shiken2662d ago (Edited 2662d ago )

@Ricegum

You do realize people still play 360 games, right?

Though in Sony's defence, PSN was still free on PS3, so there is your difference in numbers right there.

Gamingsince19812662d ago

Yeah that's just Xbox live accounts not gold...

2pacalypsenow2662d ago

@Ricegum

That's over Xbox 360 and Xbox 1, not hard to believe.

Ricegum2662d ago (Edited 2662d ago )

To the guys above.

So, what about PS3? No one had PS+ on PS3?

Ah yeah, Microsoft are probably including Silver accounts too.

Shiken2661d ago

@Ricegum

PS3 did not lock multiplayer behind a paywall, so far less people had a plus membership than 360 had Gold memberships. It is not rocket science. It was not until PS copied MS with the payed multiplayer that Plus subscribers started to really stack up.

My point is, Plus numbers are mainly PS4 gamers while XBLG members are 360 and X1 combined and over a longer period of time.

@ Azure

Way to put your foot in your mouth on multiple counts

1.) That’s from two years ago. Microsoft just had a financial report days ago and they didn’t even bother divulging subscriber numbers in it.
2.) That 48 million is fMAU for XBL as a whole at the time, which includes mobile, PC & consoles. I can’t find any site that says that’s specifically for XBLG subscribers. I do remember Forbes mistakenly thought that MAU and XBLG subscribers were interchangeable, which they aren’t.
3.) Sad how you get misinformation like that from Forbes rather than something factual from Microsoft themselves.

And there's why Nintendo won't improve the service. Despite the people complaining about the service, most will pay for it anyway.

Teflon022662d ago

Literally just said to myself when I read that title

chris2352662d ago

that‘s the real power of a brand. you can offer literally a ToaS and brand loyals will pay to play with it

Shiken2662d ago

Or people just feel forced to because they want to play Smash and Mario Kart online.

XBL was founded on this factor with Halo 3 and the like. Why would it have played out any differently for Nintendo?

bigmalky2662d ago

It's okay for £3.50 a month. I play Monster Hunter Gen U and Mario Kart online, and along with plays of Master Blaster and Metroid, I'm good.

Still want to see those SNES games and beyond though.

Kosic2662d ago

I don't even play online but for £4/Yr I signed up to someone's family group. It would be rude not too.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle18d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
