Crackdown 3 - Dead on Arrival?

Dave from Handsome Phantom is excited about Crackdown 3 but is fearful and says, "Crackdown 3 was first revealed to a crowd of excited onlookers at Microsoft’s 2014 E3 Press Conference. Almost five years ago it was announced, and we’re finally a mere two weeks away from this game finally being released. So then why are the airwaves virtually silent on this game?"

Perhaps it will be overshadowed. Anthem, Metro Exodus and the new Far Cry all loom in the month to draw gamers' attention.

Obscure_Observer2585d ago

This game has been blasted by fanboys since its announcement. I´m glad that Microsoft decided to release this game next to other big games instead of impose another delay.

Hopefully this game will have the support that it deserves from true fans and gamers! :)

darthv722585d ago

I'm sure i will have a blast with it.

jukins2585d ago

Blasted by fanboys?!?!? It was blasted by EVERYONE but xbox fanboys. Lol 2014 reveal and each and every showing after that showed what was there a lackluster kverpromised game. It wasnt until the latest showings 5 years later that it even showed a glimpse of what was promised and even now it's still nowhere near what was promised 5 years ago. The vision of the game and the cloud has been scaled back dramatically. We no longer have a full city but an arena that even with the cloud the destruction doesnt seem processed on the fly. It wont be dead on arrival simply because game pass and xbox fanboys need something to brag about

TheColbertinator2585d ago

It may be fun and all that but big titles are hitting alongside it. Bottom line is simple.

rainslacker2585d ago (Edited 2585d ago )

And if it doesn't get support, does that mean that no one is a true fan or gamer, or that the game just may not be that good, and it is getting the support that it deserves?

It is conceivable that the game won't live up to the hype that some people have put into it, especially since most of the hype seems centered around the cloud destruction, which was fairly unimpressive in implementation at the last showing.

I'd actually be more interested if the game is good outside the cloud destruction stuff. People keep talking about CD1's game play being a lot of fun. But, having played RDR2 for an ungodly number of hours, the lock on aiming isn't something I think is all that fun, and for RDR2, made the game way too easy, so suspect that it would here as well. Perhaps it can be turned off for CD3 though.

Game will probably see decent numbers. Maybe even great numbers. A lot of people are curious about the cloud destruction. Game Pass makes it easily accessible. Might even sell well, although MS isn't marketing it as much as they should for a premiere title.

2pacalypsenow2585d ago

"This game has been blasted by fanboys"

It was blasted by everyone, even MS that they had to delay it multiple times.

bluefox7552585d ago

It's not fanboys, it's people who have eyes. The game looks like trash. They've clearly given up on making it resemble something decent in favor if using celebrity endorsement to get sales.

Goldby2584d ago

@Bluefox.
they used the Halo MP beta to sell the first one, and Terry crews to sell this one lol

Obscure_Observer2584d ago (Edited 2584d ago )

@bluefox755

"It's not fanboys, it's people who have eyes. The game looks like trash."

It´s for people who have eyes indeed. Fanboys have faulty eyes.

Now, i gonna ask you the same thing that i asked rainslacker: Show me another Cel shading open world game that looks better than Crackdown 3, or GTFO!

rainslacker2583d ago

What cell shaded game looks better?

That's pretty subjective. Plus, I prefer cell shading more along the lines of cartoons or anime, over the style presented here.

Game is passable, but it's not really an overly impressive work of art in terms of what's actually there. Lots of neon colors and some good texture work on the player avatars in the current build, but everything else is rather meh. The buildings themselves are pretty lackluster. I've seen better cell shading work on buildings in mid-tier niche Japanese RPG games, and they also had a lot more character in their design than CD3 shows.

Best cell shaded game IMO still remains the Valkyria Chronicles games. But that's because they actually gave it a beautiful aesthetic, not just applied some nice lighting and slightly better shaders to what looks like something made in the Unity game engine by game design students....and yes, I still stand by my belief that this looks like something made in Unity, and could have similar results from game design students....so regurgitate how I'm wrong about that if you want, but you're not going to change my mind on that opinion.

I just want to see if it works well. The cloud tech I mean. Remember when that was the talk of N4G. It was the Xbox talking point. Also, this link is not leading to a story... Time to report guys...

darthv722585d ago

Are you going to go into it objectively or are you going to have a preconceived idea that the slightest hiccup will cause you to point and say "see... see i told you all it doesnt work"???

BizarroUltraman2585d ago (Edited 2585d ago )

You just want to see if it FAILS!!

The Wood2585d ago (Edited 2585d ago )

There has to be some balance. You can't dismiss the game if it's good but to act like 'the power of the cloud' wasn't one its main push points is being disingenuous. Remember. . it was billed as something that could only be done using the cloud. . and even a segway to being leveller so to speak as the power disparity at that time was irking the Xbox fan base.

The Metro series has never been a huge seller, the games are good but not very popular. Far Cry is the highest selling game series that you mentioned .Anthem is unproven and I have a feeling it will “fail to meet EA’s exceptions”.

sprinterboy2584d ago (Edited 2584d ago )

Farcry will come out on top in sales for the month, followed by anthem(quick week 1 sales followed by a sharp decline) , metro (same numbers, slightly higher than previous installments) and crackdown (false gaas numbers? High download numbers but inaccurate player count )

Pickledpepper2584d ago (Edited 2584d ago )

Everything after far cry 3 has been meh same rinse and repeat. Metro I couldn't get into, not sure why, but I will be buying exodus because of what I've seen. Anthem, EA nah got burnt with Destiny and I've never forgave them for dead space 3 and the franchise.

WitcheRivia2584d ago

Anthem is an EA game.
Metro Exodus is a Fortnite Launcher exclusive.
Far Cry hasn't been good since Far Cry 2.

Crackdown 3 has nothing to worry about.

TheColbertinator2584d ago

@WitcheRivia

So? EA games sells regardless of whether you like them or not. Despite criticism of Star Wars Battlefront,FIFA, Madden and Battlefield, EA games are often heavily promoted and successful.

Metro Exodus is also on PS4 and Xbox so naturally it has even larger presence with it console owners and it has a growing folowing.

Opinion. I thought FC5 was rather good after a few hours.

Livingthedream2584d ago

If its marketed right, people will buy it. Xbox's marketing has been pretty bad this gen IMO. If you look at sonys trailers and commercials they get you pumped to own a Playststation lol

Zeref2584d ago

it will have a decent chance thanks to game pass.

sprinterboy2584d ago

We will get the usual MS response of 5million have downloaded crackdown in 3 days off gaas but then fail to report 4 million players then deleted it after 2hrs.

aaronaton2584d ago

Ants typically get overshadowed. That being said, being overshadowed by the likes of Anthem is embarrassing to say the least.

Gwiz2584d ago

Potnoodle9992584d ago (Edited 2584d ago )

There is virtually no advertisement, why should there be? They already spent 2x there original budget and the game still looks average. I’d like to have a candid conversation with Phil spencer about how much this game has disappointed them Over the last couple of years. I mean I honestly expected C3 to be just another fun game with nothing to write home about just like the first 2. They were always missing that extra layer of polish and were good but not great games. But from the first gameplay reveal trailer it was clear that something has gone seriously wrong during development. My guess is too many cooks. Games tend to be better when they are not entirely designed by committee and I just have a feeling that no soul has been poured into this one.

Kribwalker2584d ago

Next Tuesday is a special edition inside xbox featuring Crackdown.

THC CELL2585d ago

I've seen it I can't wait to see what bull sh*t reviewers tell u all. Trust me ya gunna regret this game.
Imo

BizarroUltraman2585d ago

wth? As that your prediction?

GrubsterBeater2585d ago

XBox 360 Crackdown Metacritic link... Cool?

What are you trying to insinuate here?

spicelicka2584d ago

Point is that Crackdown is a well rated game, if you're going to imply that high reviews will be paid reviews then Crackdown 2 should've been highly rated as well, which it isn't. Crackdown 3 is made by Crackdown 1 team, Crackdown 2 was made by a separate team and was basically a money grab.

DaDrunkenJester2585d ago

Why would that happen? Did they pay the media to score Sea of Thieves well? Or State of Decay 2? Maybe take your tin foil hat off.

twiggytree122584d ago

They tried, but no amount of money was sufficient enough to sway a positive score.

BizarroUltraman2585d ago

They'll be waiting for Sony fanboys
checks to give the worst scores possible. And most of them will bounce cause you're cheap gamers who want everything free hahahaha
Giving CD3 good scores.

2585d ago
King_Noctis2585d ago

So if a MS game get high reviews, it is always paid for by MS? Love you guy’s logic.

Plus, if people have Gamepass, I doubt they would regret anything.

Razzer2584d ago

"Love your logic. "

fixed.

NeoGamer2322585d ago

Yup, so did MS paid reviewers to give Sea of Thieves a 69 and State of Decay 2 a 66 on Metacritic?

I'm not sure what conspiracy theory you are on, but if MS was paying for good reviews you would think they would be getting good reviews on all of their games. Both Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2 have gotten great support after release. You would think if MS was paying for good reviews these two games would've been big targets since they are investing heavily in the games after release as well.

Razzer2584d ago (Edited 2584d ago )

You know what would make even more money for the media? Writing an article exposing Microsoft's attempts to bribe them for a good review. I have little appreciation for gaming "journalists" but as addicted to click bait as they are, I seriously doubt they would pass up a golden opportunity like that.

So quit with the conspiracy nonsense. Seriously.

rainslacker2584d ago

I don't think it's ms paying anyone, or at least most, but more that some sites know that praise of ms for things like how they're going to be great next gen, will drive hits. As far as reviews, that's not really necessary, because reviews sites are mostly afraid to downrate too much.

mark_parch2584d ago

THC CELL
If the games good it will get good reviews, if it's bad it will get bad reviews. If anything I would say reviewers might be overly harsh going by past games. I thought ryse and quantum break were pretty good but obviously the media wasn't paid then. Sounds to me like you want this game to fail and are getting an excuse in early just incase it turns out to be ok

Petebloodyonion2584d ago

Actually, I predict the complete opposite that no matter how good this game could be it will score a 6 at best since media seem to have been disapointed with since day one.

Releasing between Kingdom Hearts 3, Resident Evil 2, Far Cry: New Dawn, Metro Exodus and Jump Force & Anthem is doing Crackdown 3 no favors, especially if it’s not a highly exceptional critically acclaimed title.

Crackdown 3 has never been a big series and this third one never seemed like it’d buck that trend. The main thing it had going for it that got it headline attention was its use of the cloud. Other than that there doesn’t seem to be much notable about the game that’d garner it much attention by mainstream audiences, and even Microsoft seems to think that with its relatively low marketing attempts for the game this close to release.

Atom6662585d ago

Pretty much. It's even more interesting that MS has marketing deals with half those games. They'll be paying ad dollars on games that will take attention from their own title. Bet they love that...

But they couldn't have delayed it again without being crucified for it. I'm glad they stuck with this game overall, but it was never going to be a big AAA "killer app" game. MS has known that all along. It should have been a lower risk title with a 2-3 year dev time. Collect 2-3 million in sales over its lifetime and move on.

Instead they've gone through what? 5 or 6 years of dev time and troubles. Again, I'm happy that they did, and the game looks fun imo, but there is no way MS makes much money on this one.

We shouldn't be surprised by the lack of a large marketing push. It'll be a nice addition to GP and will probably sell a couple million. Look for them to push it next week through their Inside Xbox thing, then a week of previews from their press efforts last week, and reviews beginning the following week.

Maybe they're planning some big Super Bowl ad and I'm completely wrong, but I just don't think they see much benefit in dumping $$ into a huge ad campaign after spending probably 2X its original budget.

timotim2585d ago

Except CD3 is a Game Pass title, which none of those other games you've mentioned is. It has that going for it and it means millions will have a chance to try it and CD3 will have its opportunity to impress or not...

2585d ago
Atticus_finch2584d ago (Edited 2584d ago )

@L7 cool story. So your PS4 is collecting dust because you decided to play 3rd party games on your Xbox, that's your prob not the PS.

"it's why I got an Xbox..."
And i got a Ps, because even green boys can't help but own one, even though they "hate" it so much. Lol

rob-GP2584d ago

Not 'millions' - GP has about 500k people subbed to it, if that. MS always exaggerate how many people use their services. Don't forget, GP accounted for 14% of streaming/rental services last year, with PSNow a massive 52%. I highly doubt PSNow has more than about 1-2m users

rainslacker2585d ago

The game has relied on cloud destruction to be its main, if not only, key selling point since it's announcement. It was the poster child for what would be possible with the cloud. 4-1/2 years later, and people will finally see for themselves what we've been told we should wait for, and what would be so amazing for this gen....5-1/4 years into the gen at that.

The core SP or MP game, may be good. Even the cloud stuff may be good, but its still just a crackdown game. Game had a cult following. 1st game was decently received, but nothing to write home about. 2nd game seems everyone agrees that it sucked. It hasn't been a franchise that has been on the lists of great Xbox exclusives ever, so CD3 got raised up well above what it normally would have been. It's more than I'd expect for the exclusive bump that you see for other exclusives, and other companies mid-tier titles don't get nearly the same attention, even though they often tend to look better than what I've seen for CD3.

But, the marketing for this game is remarkably low. While they don't need full on advertising spots, these candid events where people get to play it isn't really advertising to the masses, and player previews only give you so much draw for the consumer. I'd have expected by now for there to be a slew of marketing material out there. Trailers that feature game play in abundance. Other trailers which just promote the game. Lots of talk from the dev and MS about it. So on and so forth. But, overall, the media talking about it is usually just lone articles which don't do much to sell the product.

darthv722585d ago

the 1st is fun and even the 2nd is fun but the main gripe most have with the 2nd was that it wasnt different enough from the 1st. More of the same, hence why many call it 1.5. So the 3rd looks to return to form and bring both fun and even grander destructible environments with it.

As for marketing, it seems MS marketing overall the last couple of years has been really scaled back.

bluefox7552585d ago

Yeah, not sure what made them think this game was a good idea to begin with

rainslacker2585d ago

I think it'll be fine if its fun, and can keep the player engaged. I recall play CD1 a long time ago at a friends house, but I don't really remember it enough to make a judgement now. I don't recall it being bad, or not fun.

I haven't been overly impressed with what's been shown, but it's not my style of game to begin with, so I can't judge it based on that. People can decide for themselves, because I'm really in it just to see how the cloud destruction works, even if they didn't manage to implement it to the scale that many seemed to think it would for all these years after that first full city demo. That's not a measure of the potential of the technology, just the measure of the ability of the developer, coupled with the hardware it has to run on. And for those who want to say something about the hardware, I mean the OGX1, not the X1X, because this is certainly a lowest common denominator situation.

2585d ago Replies(1)
King_Noctis2585d ago

CD3 is on Gamepass so I don’t think MS would care much anyway. Even if not alot of people buy it, millions still play it through Gamepass and that would still be a big win for MS.

alb18992585d ago

It will be on gamepass so it will be first on my list. In fact I downloaded it already

Critic4l_Strik32584d ago

Maybe releasing it between all those games will be MS's cover up for bad reviews

frostypants2584d ago (Edited 2584d ago )

But if C3 is indeed a mess, releasing it amongst those titles will lessen the attention it gets and actually help mute the PR blowback. Maybe they don't want the release to be too high profile.

Yep. A company that built itself by ripping off IP of small, innovative developers and out-marketing them. Tencent is everything wrong not just with gaming but corporate ethics in general, and the assymetric regulatory playing field we for some reason permit from the Chinese government. Egregiously corrupt companies like Tencent should be banned from the US market.

senorfartcushion1684d ago

The US market would take Tencent to dinner and have it naked on the bed by midnight if it could. America and China are as bad as each other

Lightning771684d ago

They can take Sumo those devs really aren't that great. Sack boys big adventure scored good however but Crackdown 3 wasn't great. They're 50/50 Sony will find a suitable replacement for Sack boy. MS desperately needs a suitable replacement for crackdown, if it's not already too late in terms of fanfare at this point.

Sumo to me isn't that big of a deal there are better devs out there.

senorfartcushion1684d ago

Crackdown 3 was cancelled and remade a few times. Hardly their fault.

darthv721684d ago

This is the same Sumo who made Outrun 2, 2006 Coast to Coast, Sonic Racing Transformed as well as Forza Horizon 2 on the 360. I think they are better than you give them credit for.

chadwarden1684d ago

And they likely bought Housmarque and Bluepoint for even less than Insomniac.

phoenixwing1684d ago

at the two above me,
it's easy to sell for less when you know you're in good hands business and culture wise. I mean sure you could scratch out some extra money elsewhere but are all the people you know going to be taken care of when you get bought out? Sony takes care of them. Basically you can tell who's a scheming money scumbag by what ceo's/execs choose to be bought by. In the end money talks but there's extras to consider sometimes.

roadkillers1684d ago

I am as well. They do not own any IPs from my understanding...

DOMination-1684d ago

Me too! After looking them up, it seems like they were the parent of other game studios: Lab42, Red Kite, Sumo India, The Chinese Room and PixelAnt Games and also have some cryptocurrency technology.

They may also still hold the IP for back when they were Gremlin Interactive.. back in the Amiga days they were really a dev of some repute.

ScootaKuH1684d ago

Gremlin. Now there's a name that takes me back. Ocean as well.

Teflon021684d ago

They're not, it's likely them just throwing money around to make sure they have no opposition. Sumo is a valuable developer as they've assisted in alot of great games. They did LBP3, Sackboy, Sonic Transformed, I believe Assisted in both ModNation Racers and LBPK, Team Sonic racing, just to name the few off the top of my head that I own.

It's a lot of money for a group with no ips, what would they have worked on to keep so many studios and staff employed. For now at least they continue working on ips for the likes of Sony and Microsoft.

IRetrouk1684d ago

Sony and ms have more than enough ips to keep em busy, the price would have been an issue though, that I agree with, just surprised is all🤷‍♂️

Tencent doesn't exactly pride themselves on original IP anyway. They just steal someone else's. They only need developer drones.

Sephiroushin1684d ago

They have enough to make them busy but there is no point in buying the studio that high, they could just make the developers some offers and thats it... heck every single developer could just quit the studio and with what is tensen left? no point in buying a studio with no IP you dont own the developers

IRetrouk1684d ago

I already agreed that the price was high, still don't take away that they could have been used, and be useful to either ms or sony

SullysCigar1961d ago

My attempt at humour could have been clearer, in hindsight..!

Yeah, sadly Crackdown 3 had been hyped so hard and so long by Microsoft, that when it launched as a mediocre game, it got panned. It was mainly the broken promises about the power of the cloud I think that did it. This was the 'cloud power' poster child for years and it all amounted to nothing, which is a real shame, because if they'd realised their initial vision it could have been special.

bunt-custardly1961d ago

I do remember the original vision where entire buildings could be demolished but wasn't that feature relegated to the multiplayer mode? For me, Crackdown 3 comes across quite generic. I suppose if it had the full destruction in the story mode that would have been bad-ass. If Red Faction Guerrilla can do it why not CD?

FanboySpotter1961d ago

Crackdown 3 was made for crackdown fans. Hated by non crackdown fans. Enjoyed by crackdown fans.

MadLad1961d ago

I played it on PC for a little while via gamepass. It's not nearly as terrible as people would try to make it out to be, but it's the definition of a "meh" game.

100%. This is obviously just showing what can be done with the current highest end hardware, rather than what should be. And if you're splashing out for an RTX 3090 over a 3080 for gaming (small performance delta if not using that huge buffer for productivity), then I guess you'll also consider splashing out for an 8k screen. And, I mean, you'll want to be able to do *something* with it lol.
