Gamestop's Days Are Numbered

Dave from Handsome Phantom says, "if I were part of the brass at the company’s headquarters, I’d get out as quickly as I can. Gamestop once had what felt like a monopoly on the video game retail industry."

They tried to give me $35 for an Xbox One. Never went back. Due to shitty business practices and the rise of digital media they are the next Blockbuster.

Sieg2672d ago

that's because of refurb fee. If you xb1 is defective or have bad cosmetic that deemed to be hard sell at the store. Then it would ship back to their refurbish center and get work on. That would cover shipping cost, labor, and potential replacement parts.

Seriously, only trade in at GS when there a promo. Most of the time you get okay value depends on supply and demand.

Razzer2671d ago (Edited 2671d ago )

Also, simple supply and demand. Xbox One trade value isn't very good. For example, Xbox One X trade value at GameStop is actually less than PS4 Pro despite being the more expensive console.

PS4 Pro - $200
https://www.gamestop.com/tr...

Xbox One X - $160
https://www.gamestop.com/tr...

But yeah, if you are going to trade in, wait for a deal. Better yet, just sell on ebay.

roadkillers2671d ago

This plus, Gamestop employees are morons... curious if anyone agrees or not.

I just purchased a kinect for my 360, which I told them it was for. They sold me the xbox one kinect. Bought games for the Switch saying I was having a party, they said I was good go to. I wasn't, had to go back to purchase wii remotes which they argued with me saying that the normal wii remotes wont work on the switch... they did work. There has been countless other times.

Razzer2671d ago (Edited 2671d ago )

Wii remotes are not supported on Switch. You can make it work with third party adapters, but GameStop isn't going to advise you of anything that is officially supported.

roadkillers2671d ago

^ oh my bad, I meant Wii U. Either way, use less company and employees.

Razzer2671d ago

Wii U controllers are not supported either.
From the Nintendo Switch FAQ page:

"Controllers from previous Nintendo platforms are not supported."
https://www.nintendo.com/sw...

roadkillers2671d ago

^ Wii remotes to play games on Wii u

deno2671d ago

Gamestop emoyees are following laid out instructions. They are good people who I chat with when I purchase games there. Gamestop going down is highly bad for physical gaming. With digital your used games/cheaper prices will be gone.

Gwiz2671d ago

I'm not aware of Nintendo allowing any prior gen hardware to work on a newer system (I'm doubting about the gamecube but I think that was third-party as well)

roadkillers2671d ago

There are so many mom and pop games stores. Physical media would be the same with or without gamestop. Most of the purchases come from retailers anyways

Im suprised use videogame buy-back is still a thing in stores at all. How many other electronics do people resell back to storefronts? I know if I ever had to sell something electronic (phone, TV, etc) - I would try my luck selling it myself on ebay or something. I know Bestbuy, etc would just laugh me out of the store.

This isn't necessarily a gamestop thing, its just that service is NOT worth the cost to them to continue.

Gwiz2671d ago

Selling to them is not even the better deal and in most cases the absolute worst you can do.

DaGreatDennis2671d ago

That's amazing. I understand the overhead involved with reselling systems, but is there anyone lazy enough to not try and sell it for even $50 on FB marketplace or Craigslist? They've got to be sightly more competitive on prices of they hope to get any takers.

ActualWhiteMan2671d ago

I received $100 for my kids original Xbox One at Christmas time, traded toward a 1TB X1S with Battlefield V and $50 giftcard which was $229 at that time. Couldnt pass that up.

InTheZoneAC2671d ago

100% sure your xbox looked like someone smoked heroin, cigs, meth, and weed for 365 days straight while your system was resting on the carpet for all the critters to run into while the crud in the vents provided warmth for them to nest.

Then you look at me with a straight face like your **** is clean. And your controller is trashed so I have to charge you for the price GS sells one and there's your $35...

Yes, spoken from experience back in the day.

I love GameStop. Hope this isn’t going to turn out true...

Marioraider182672d ago

You are like the only person I know who "loves" gamestop. I mean they are okay, but their trade in and resale practices are messed up

darthv722672d ago

True but not everyone trades in to gamestop. I like their 4 for $20 deals myself.

StormSnooper2672d ago

I think they have to do that to stay afloat in the online shopping era. I don’t trade in but if I do I accept the cost of convenience. Other than that I love them for the experience. I like having a dedicated game store. It’s part of the experience of being a gamer for me. I will miss them when they are gone.

neutralgamer19922672d ago (Edited 2672d ago )

Mario

No there are many who like GS but stay quite yet the vocal monroty always thinks they are the only ones who matter

They have started to put some great deals even now as we speak farcry 5 is $14.99 and AC is $24.99. Their trade in sucks and we can all agree on that. Did you know that few years ago 85% of gamers who traded in their games or systems used that credit to buy new copies of games( there are many who can't afford to buy new games until they can trade or sell their old ones so these publishers are who complaining about used games better be careful because they will lose a lot of potential customers)

Another thing that excites me aboit all digital is the fact most publishers won't ever see a reason to put their games on big sales when gamers don't have much other options

Building up my backlog with physical media because it's line unlike digital which is a lincnse

GameStop elite ended
GCU ended
Amazon 20% off ended

Doon enough it will be either pay full price or be at the mercy of publishers for when they want to put their games on sale

rainslacker2672d ago

People who like GS, or don't have problems with them, can never express they like GS without a plethora of hate being thrown at them, because many people have an irrational hate for GS which borders on psychotic.

GameStop has plenty to like. They have plenty to dislike. If you want games, they are about the only thing left for dedicated game stores where you can go in and browse without having to go into a department store. Most places to buy games retail don't have anywhere near the selection, and outside Best Buy, browsing games is not exactly easy anywhere but GS. Go to Wal-Mart or target, and everything is behind glass. Go to Best Buy, and while you can browse games from the shelf, they have limited selection.

The people who have problems with them seem to be upset that GS won't give them their full purchase price back for games, or that they aren't willing to let used games go on the cheap. They seem upset that GS tries to sell them open games as new, because apparently they don't have the capacity to say no at checkout. They get upset over the upsells, because again, I guess they can't say no. They get upset about them selling collectibles, but don't realize that running a brick and mortar store is expensive...like the average retail space for where they're located can easily be between 3-10K a month in rent.

Beyond that, if you just want to go in and buy games, what's wrong with them? They have them. They have more selection than other in-store retail outlets. They often have workers which know about games. Their rewards program doesn't suck, and its easy to have it pay for itself. With the removal of Amazon Prime discounts and soon BB gaming rewards program going defunct, there isn't as much advantage to them unless one just doesn't want to go to the store.

Truth is, I know more people who have no problem with GS, even considering the large number of people who seem to hate them online.

gamer78042671d ago

it all depends on the management and workers at your store, I have 3 within 10 minutes of me and all three are great, there is one towards the city that isn't very good (but not horrible).

Razzer2671d ago

"love" is a bit strong, but I've never had a bad experience at Gamestop. I certainly have had no reason to dislike Gamestop. I would much rather go to Gamestop than Best Buy or Walmart.

2671d ago
jaymacx2671d ago

Having a dedicated game store is a great thing. The problem is the company has gotten sleazy with it’s practices. Some of the employees are awesome and treat me with respect and friendliness. Then on the flip side I have had many headaches dealing with how some employees sell your preorders to walk in customers, sell you opened games as new etc. The way they handled amiibo preorders during the amiibo craze. Outdated ordering system. Rip off on shipping costs. If they fixed how they do things I would keep going there. As for trade ins I refuse, I’d rather just keep it or sell it on ebay.

kreate2671d ago

I also 'love' GameStop. I'll be sad seeing them go.

gta28002672d ago

What is there to love about the company if you dont mind me asking? The only positive thing I can say about them is that they're in the business of something I love but that still doesnt say much. If they were more fair with trade ins they probabaly wouldnt be too bad. Give you 20 bucks for a game and resell it for 54.99 lol. Ridiculous.

paradigmfellow2671d ago

The way they treat their employees is abysmal. I know because I used to work for them.

DEEBO2671d ago

Me too
Poor people...
If you don't get a certain amount of reserves you can kiss you're hours goodbye.
Then you have keep ripping people off with trades,I use to tell them just keep your games because we are taking advantage of you.
But I did get some good deals there by offering the customer more then GameStop,go outside and buy the games and consoles.
It's easy to out bid GameStop.

Tech52672d ago

they're like pawnshops more less. a couple places even tell you if you want more money to sell it on ebay.
Only go to the pawnshops or game stores to buy, for selling do it online. unless you really need the money.

Sam Fisher2672d ago

Actually thats 100% true, if you ever go to one look at the permits, one for electronics and the other for pawning. I used to be a manager (boycott them ever since)

rainslacker2672d ago

Selling on Ebay doesn't usually net you much more in the end, as Ebay and Paypal take a significant portion of the sale. Ebay is good for the buyers, not usually the sellers, and there is chance you get ripped off on Ebay, which can cause all sorts of hassles with both Ebay, and paypal, because neither really honor their seller protection without a hassle, and assume you as the seller are in the wrong, even if you have thousands of sales that go off without a hitch. I'm a power seller on Ebay, and a few months ago, someone claimed I never sent the game, despite having a signature for the purchase since it was an expensive sale. I not only lost the money from the sale, despite seller protection, but had to spend hours getting my paypal account unlocked, but despite years of no problems, I suddenly became someone who defrauds my customers.

Elda2672d ago

I hope not I have no problem with Gamestop though their trade in practices at times can be questionable.

rainslacker2672d ago

I hope not too. I hope they get better with this rumored sale. I don't care for their trade in policies either, but I don't always find their trade in prices unfair, and it's not like Amazon or Best Buy offer more most of the time.

There are some things they do that are annoying, but I think some people have an irrational hate for GS which I could never understand. I once stopped shopping there before all this hate became so heavy, but that was because an individual clerk really pissed me off. Spent years not going there, then when I went back, almost always had no problem with them. One time i had an issue, but it was resolved to my satisfaction, and it seemed more like a situation where the people in the store weren't really all that aware of what was their responsibility or what they could do.

But I'm also one of those people who can say no to something I don't like. The only reason I can think a lot of people who seem to hate them have a problem, is because they don't say no to the things they don't like. I don't know how much simpler it can be to buy games at retail though. Outside opening new games and trying to sell them as new, which happens sometimes, there is nothing wrong with the way they sell games, and if the price of used games isn't acceptable to the person complaining, then don't buy it. No reason to say GS is evil because of their pricing.

rainslacker2672d ago (Edited 2672d ago )

This article's author is clueless. Saying the management should get out now is stupid. They're about to sell off. That's good for the executives. They'll likely get a nice bonus for saving the investors money, and probably getting them more than they would otherwise. Buyouts can be profitable.

As far as them going down, why is that the immediate assumption? How many companies get brought out, just to get shut down? You have a well recognized brand in GameStop, and despite the hate they get in gaming forums, there is a lot of worth to the name alone. The problem is that they can't remain profitable enough to stay open, but anyone willing to buy them is probably going to do so because they believe they have a way to make it profitable. Otherwise, why buy them? If that company just wanted to shut them down, they could save millions by just letting nature take its course, and it'd end up going bankrupt.

If the company that buys out GameStop can't make it profitable, then GS days are numbered. but a rumored buy out of GS means that new life may get breathed into the company, and likely any company that buys it is going to invest more into making it better. They aren't likely to just have it be business as usual. That's not usually how it works.

Atom6662671d ago

Id temper expectations on any ideas that consumers will be benefitting much from the buyout. Maybe some of the execs, but excuse me for not caring about their wallets.

Anyone looking to buy them out can only have short term returns in mind. Like Blockbuster or the thousands of indie stores that Gamestop's expansion helped to shutter, a brick and morter media store doesn't have a very good outlook in 2019.

The entire profit model of the corporation is built off of resale of media in an industry that is actively moving away from them.

rainslacker2671d ago

I have no expectations at all. I'm just saying that these things don't happen the way the author puts forth.

I don't really care about the execs either. But the way it's going, it's silly for the author to say the execs should get out while they can. It's not like they're in mortal danger, or destined for ruin if they don't.

I agree, short term returns can be an option, but outside inventory and brand name, there isn't much there to work with, since they don't own the properties that that they run their stores out of.

I agree with the profit model, but there is still enough there to keep them viable. They just need to find a better way to handle it. Until physical actually is not an option, it's viable, and the console market still is primarily physical. Digital is only one part of their reason for losing sales. Lack of profit margin in new games is continuously shrinking for physical games, which is why Amazon and BB are stopping their discount programs, because they aren't going to lose money. That $12 people were saving before, was almost their entire profit margin. But the online stores are taking a lot of business. GS has to carry a huge inventory, with net terms which are relatively short and risky investment in inventory which isn't returnable if they can't sell it, so they take a loss on things that don't sell as well as predicted....like FO76. That's hard to do with a brick and mortar store, where rent along could be anywhere from $3-10K a month,....if not more in the major cities.

I don't really know what could allow them to survive by moving away from the collectibles or higher profit margin things. And you aren't wrong, eventually, digital will probably take up a significant part of the market, where there is no way they can without going more retro, which will probably reduce their impact to the level of comic book shops.

PlayStation Confirms New DRM, Digital Games Will Vanish If Players Don't Log-In For 30 Days

Tech4Gamers writes: "A PlayStation Support assistant has confirmed that the 30-day timer implemented by the new DRM policy is part of an update and isn’t a bug. While responding to a fan’s query, PS support revealed that all games purchased digitally after March 2026 will be affected by this time limit.

If your PS4 or PS5 does not connect to the internet within 30 days, the game’s license will expire, and it won’t launch on the console unless the connection is restored. Hence, every digital game you purchase from now on will require an online check-in, or else you will lose ownership."

That is wild lol. Steam already does this for some games depending on the developer...but man...all digital games on ps5...

Eonjay13d ago

FYI, it hasn't actually been confirmed. This is just a lot of assumptions. If this is the case i would expect Sony to come out and say so. Chat bot response doesn't count as official confirmation.

People are also saying this is also an inadvertent mistake. If this is the case Sony and its customers would be best served by coming out and saying so.

If this isn't a mistake I think they need to confirm it and Playstation gamers should complain.

darthv7213d ago

Sounds like Sony quietly did what MS openly said they were going to do with the once a month check in... and MS got so much flak they had to change course.

People need to give Sony even more flak if its true.

blacktiger13d ago

If the response is from Sony whether irresponsible employee or chatbot. That's from SONY until Sony reiterate

Dandizzle13d ago

seriously, a large company like sony wouldnt do that without an announcement or else it would result in bombardment of customer service

Sony's chatbot is notoriously garbage at providing even basic information and functioning properly. I wouldn't take anything it says seriously.

That said, if this is true, this is serious af. Major L for gamers across the board.

This is beyond nuts, this was pretty much the exact thing that the playstation execs during the ps4 era mocked the xbox one over and xbox never recovered after it, this is why you need stiff competition folks, Sony high on their own supply just like the early ps3 days where we apparently needed 2 jobs to afford one, I was a massive Ps3 fanboy mainly due to the fact that the xbox 360 pushed sony into a corner resulting in them actually trying real hard to get market share back and as a result we got crazy good exclusives, just for old times sakes like I used to do back in 2012 right here on n4g ill relist some of the major exclusives of ps3 again

Demons souls
Metal gear solid 4
uncharted 1,2,3
infamous 1,2, festival of blood
little big planet 1,2 & little big planet karting
gran turismo 5 and 6 & ridge racer 7
killzone 2,3
twisted metal
journey
ratchet and clank tools of destruction, quest for booty, crack in time, all for one, into the nexus
resistance 1,2,3
last of us 1
god of war 3 and ascension
motorstorm collection
ico & shadow of the colossus collection
folklore
modnation racers
warhawk & starhawk
sly collection & jack and daxter collection
Puppeteer & comet crash & tokyo jungle & rain & gravity crash & Echochrome & the last guy
Heavenly Sword
3D Dot Game Heroes
Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale
Mag & Socom 4
Fat Princess
Ni no Kuni, Valkyria Chronicles, Yakuza 3,4,5 (these all came to pc later )

But just think and compare this catalog of games to ps5 ?
Saros, astro bot, demons souls remake, ghost of yotei, I would have included gran turismo 7 but that came on ps4 as well so not really an absolute exclusive that one needs to buy a ps5 to play like the other 4.

We are almost in the 6th year of the ps5, the 6th year of the ps3 was around 2012 and almost all the games from the list above were already released on the ps3, now if they are really pulling this online crap every 30 days non sense its only because of a lack of competition from xbox and so they have console players by the ba**s, now I don't know whether this is confirmed or not but regardless if this is in general where their headspace is at it seems like we should be worried, its the real playstation gamers that will be affected if its true, Im not even a playstation gamer anymore but my recommendation is put your money where you mouth is and really abandon playstation if this ends up being true.

Extermin8or3_13d ago

No it isnt. The xbox one require you to check in online every 24 hours. Also alot has changed in terms of Internet infrastructure and provision globally since 2013.....

hiawa2313d ago

Looking at what consoles cost now, many need 2 jobs.

cytricks13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Not quiet. Xbox wanted to do DRM for physical games so they would be locked to your account and not sharable

Zerobalance13d ago

Most of those games are trash. Deal bro🤣 Ponies gotta pony up. Muma Sony wants some more cash. PC bro! Good ol' games. Look it up.

Ashunderfire8613d ago

O man you remember that PS3 statement from crazy Ken Kutagri whatever is last name is, was so cringe for saying,”Your gonna want PS3 so bad you need 2 jobs!” That guy overhype the crap out of PS3, that was the most expensive console, an a lot of misinformation about the graphics and performance delta over 360.

Kyizen13d ago

Xbox drm was for physical games also and 24 hours with no sharing

vTuro2412d ago

Yeah stuff like this is why competition is needed. The ps360 era was peak gaming. Microsoft and Sony waging a full on war and Nintendo just kinda doing their own thing. The gamers only benefited from that. Then Microsoft shot themselves in the dick with the Xbone and that gen felt like a step down from the previous (imo), though it wasn't bad still.
Then you have the current gen, which honestly feels like one big nothingburger. Barely anything interesting gets released while prices keep going up which to me is just insane. Astro Bot is basically their only exclusive that I'd be interested in buying, but I'm not buying an console just for that. Especially not one as expensive as the ps5... I would add Demon's Souls to that, but I already played the original. Loved the game, but a remake isn't a system seller for me.

This has to be a mistake.

“Received word from an anonymous insider. The Sony DRM issue is unintentional. From what we gathered, Sony accidentally broke something while fixing an exploit. They've known about the confusing UI for a while, but didn't see it as urgent. Hoping for a clarifying statement now.”

Eonjay13d ago

I find their communication to be very poor. If this is an error on their part why let people get worried about it? I understand they don't respond to rumor but sometimes they make it worse by not responding and this is an unforced error on top of and apparent unforced error.

Kribwalker13d ago

There’s people that talked directly to people, not chat bots, that confirmed it’s real 🤷‍♂️
I expect those fans that were so against Xbox doing it to eat a whole lot of crow

Outside_ofthe_Box13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Damn, we having diehards coming out of the woodworks for this. 😳

But you're right this is literally what led to the demise of the Xbox One and led to some calling it the Xbone.

There is literally no need for this and Sony has been doing just fine without it. If I don't turn on my console for 30 days and want to play offline I should be able to play the game that I paid for, no if and or buts about it.

Jin_Sakai13d ago

If it’s real it won’t last long. Almost every PlayStation YouTube video is full of revolt comments about it.

The screenshot from the article is from an AI chat bot, there are plenty of screenshots floating around from actual human chat reps stating the opposite.

It this is real then I will never buy digital again and if the PS6 is digital only then it will be the first Playstation Console I wont buy

VersusDMC13d ago

"Games will vanish" is click baity as hell...all you have to do is log in and the license is restored.

phatak13d ago

@ VersusDMC The entire goal for us gamers is to want to avoid that lol, what if sony's servers are down or having some maintenance, many times ive just played my installed games without even signing into psn, from now one it means every 30 days I have to at the very least sign it to psn to even play my installed games, cannot even play single player games without singing in, so for example if sony just decides to ban me from psn, I cannot even play the games locally already installed on my drive that I purchased after march 2026, you don't think thats insane ? you just want to accept that ? abandon playstation right now if this story gets confirmed.
we officially have started renting games from march 2026, it was a good run we had 1994 to 2026.

VersusDMC13d ago

Maintenance doesn't last 30 days

Who doesn't sign in to psn for 30 days? Missing out on game updates, new games, messages, demos, etc...

You already lost all your purchases if you got permanently banned from psn so that's not new.

And if for some reason you don't have internet for 30 days you can use your smartphone as a Hotspot to connect your ps5 to the internet.

phatak13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

@VersusDMC my point isn't not about the 30 days maintenance man, the fact that you are willing to accept this 30 days sign in means they totally OWN you now, what if they change this later to 7 days, im sure you will be making the exact same point right " who doesnt sign into psn every 7 days" ? eventually say it becomes every 24 hours you cool with that too ? by psn banning you I mean to say if I get banned on psn right now for some weird reason that they decide, but I have 20 installed games already downloaded and ready to play just by clicking X, basically all the exclusives from ps4 and ps5, even if my psn is banned I still get to play the games already installed right now same like putting the disc into a banned console, from march 2026 will I be able to play my locally installed games with a banned PSN ? Its not about the length of time, its the fact that the corporation gets total control over how I choose to even play my single player offline games with mandatory sign ins, a simple thing such as forgetting my password would mean I cant even play ghost of yotei offline without signing into psn.

You ever heard the phrase "give someone an inch and they will take a yard", thats what will happen here, it doesn't just end at 30 days sign in, that's just the start

cytricks13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Is it that difficult to sign in for one second every 30 days? Especially if you are ps plus member who wants to get their free games?

phatak13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

@cytricks You are focusing again on the 30 days too, "oh sony said its only 30 days so we are safe" While its not a probability YET, just know that your playstation turns into a brick if sony decides to turn off those servers.

Sony's lack of communication is telling my conspiracy filled mind lol that they're testing to see if they can get away with this. If it was truly a mistake, they would have acknowledged it, apologised, and stated they're working on a fix.
