Future Business Shift Could See Nintendo Move Away From Home Console Development

In regards to Nintendo's future plans, the president said the company could one day permanently shift away from home console development, if necessary. He noted how more mobile games could also help increase the flow of revenue.

I understand why he would say that as a ceo who wants to make money. But I really think the whole mobile gaming, continuous revenue stream thing is a bubble and when that bubble bursts they will want to have their hands in other pots.

Or don’t put all their eggs in one basket.

anonymousfan2700d ago

All they're saying is that they will adapt to where the market leads instead of promising to take one particular approach ... Which seems wise and pretty much what any sensible company should be doing. There is really nothing to learn in this article.

CorndogBurglar2700d ago

I'm not sure why you are getting disagrees. That is exactly what he is saying.

starchild2700d ago

You're perceptive and intelligent enough to understand that, but sadly a lot of people will twist the meaning to suit their preconceived notions.

ABizzel12700d ago

The mobile market has passed Console and PC gaming in annual revenue, and that's due to hundreds of millions of people having access to mobile devices and spending what equate to billions on mobile games, specifically microtransactions. Nintendo is still a Japanese company and rooted in JP philosophies, and right now mobile RULES Japan. Finally Nintendo as a hardware manufacturer hasn't been competitive head to head since the GameCube era as far as performance goes. They focus on accessible and easy to develop hardware, their games can run on and reach masses, and that is exactly what the mobile market encompasses.

The issue is the mobile market has not been able to produce a feature length epic of a similar scale to something like Zelda, however, that will soon be a thing of the past, because 7nm fabrication nodes hitting CPUs and soon mobile GPUs will allow the 3 major mobile bottlenecks to be less of an issue.

1. Battery Life. This will improve exponentially with 7nm as devices get more powerful, meanwhile consuming less power.

2. Thermal Throttling. This will be less of an issue as processors improve in performance and allow for better heating control and more time between frames to reduce thermals.

3. GPU performance. With Battery life improved and thermals reduced, mobile GPU will be able to flex more of their true performance. Mobile GPUs already exceed the Switch and high-end tablets are closing in on original XBO performance.

Combined these things will allow a true console experience to be had on mobile, all you need is a bluetooth controller, or attachable one.

Taking it a step further, we are starting to see active cooling and liquid cooling coming to some smartphones, effectively reducing thermal throttling to bare minimal levels and nearly removing thermal concerns. ALso Battery technology is advancing as well offering more charge and quick charging options for significantly better battery life. In less than 5 years, cell phones will be pushing close to 1 TF of performance, and tablets will be running at XBO and PS4 levels, which is more than enough for Nintendo games.

With all that being said, Nintendo will still stick to producing their own handhelds, because they are their money makers and until hardware sales drop off a cliff for 2 or more generations, going exclusively mobile will not happen. Their home console business though is on the rocks, with maybe one more attempt when the time is right. One more fail there and it's handheld only for the foreseeable future.

For me though, until one of the phone manufacturers figures out a phone design that includes a physical button interface, I will continue to ignore the mobile gaming market. I simply cannot play the kinds of AAA games I enjoy while using virtual buttons. It's fine for Candy Crush or Pokemon Go, but can you imagine trying to play Breath of the Wild without buttons?

Also, I'm not sure if the established pricing structure will ever allow for full AAA experiences in the mobile space. People pitched a fit over the 10.00 price for Mario Run. What are they going to say when the first full 60.00 AAA game hits Google Play store?

fiveby92699d ago

@WickedLester Yes I agree mobile is not my preferred platform. A few things I find terrible about mobile, 1. the rampant f2p model with "in-your-face MTs everywhere. 2. The awful control scheme of onscreen buttons. 3. For me, the screen is just too small for long duration gaming sessions.

I do worry that traditional gaming companies are being influenced strongly by the mobile casual crowd.

ABizzel12699d ago

The control excuse is a tired and poor one.

The majority of mobile games allow you to connect Bluetooth controllers to them and play, on top of that there are a bunch of extremely good ones that have designs similar to PS or XBOX controllers, or snap around your phone as a case controller.

On top of that Samsung will soon allow you to completely beam your phone experience to newer Samsung TVs with near nonexistent lag, and Apple is improving their airplay as well.

WickedLester2696d ago

@ABizzel

Yes, I realize you can pair external controllers to your phone via blue tooth. However for ME, if I have to carry around separate accessories just to play a mobile game properly, that absolutely negates the convenience of mobile gaming in the first place.

ABizzel12696d ago

@Wicked

I get that to an extent, but it's no difference from the Switch currently, which I would consider to be mobile / handheld as well, you're carrying the extra controllers around with the benefit that they attach to it, and there are a lot of controllers for mobile that wrap around your phone and do the same.

https://www.google.com/sear...

I'm not saying Mobile is a home console replacement or PC replacement, but 7nm phones are the start of "console quality" games coming to mobile in masses, because the overall technology is finally there.

You'll see more Fornite's, Grid Autosport, and other 3rd party games ported to mobile. AAA F2P games, a huge influx of indie games, and more will be making their way to mobile making it a viable gaming platform for billions of gamers that traditional console and PCs can't reach.

Mobile is not a replacement for console or PC gaming, but it most definitely is the replacement for all future handhelds not named Nintendo, unless those devices are just mobile devices branded specifically for gaming; for example a PS Tablet.

It’s an evolution that will not go away.
Either the gaming fad will go back down, become too expensive, or go mobile.
The biggest boom in a gaming trend does not come from adults, it kids. Depending on the age boom, it dictates the trend...
But getting a device that is on the go and delivering titles instead of “power” will be looked at for the younger gamers. No purchase of a tv so that the family will have a tv, digital software(allowing for better anti-piracy= more profit, and ease of use.
My point, it is not going anywhere any time soon and the profits are far larger on said games.
Saying mobile gaming is a fad the touch screen phone is a fad.

XiNatsuDragnel2701d ago

Nintendo bad idea here. Mobile is a career right now, I'm terrified of Nintendos decision here

porkChop2701d ago

What decision? It's a hypothetical, they're not actually planning to do it.

XiNatsuDragnel2701d ago

True but I'm keeping an eye on Nintendo

rainslacker2700d ago

Nintendo has already supported some mobile development. While this too is a hypothetical, we've seen this hypothetical move quickly to a mobile focus.

I don't think nintendo is at the point of giving up on the hardware market anytime soon though. Even the home console market can be served by making hybrids, or just having a TV out with a separate controller. Even if they make mobile games, they'll still likely support their consoles.

XtaZ2700d ago

Your comments are always either mind-numbingly stupid, just a parrot reply of someone else's comment or full of blatant lies. Go away.

prankster1012701d ago

Going this party... YEAH BABY!

EddieNX 2700d ago

This is talking about the distant future where consoles may no longer be nessecary. Why would you make a console in 25 years if streaming works flawlessly? In that case, Sony and Microsoft would stop making consolea as well.

Look what happened to blockbuster when Netflix came out. The same could happen to consoles when game streaming becomes the norm.

Doge2700d ago

Idk why you'd bother going to a party that'll have the same amount of people as the number of Switch exclusives coming out this year lmao

EddieNX 2700d ago (Edited 2700d ago )

That would be a decent party!!! Switch has the richest lineup of exclusives for this year.

Prankster editors his comment , I'm sure I responded on topic lol.

King_Noctis2700d ago

Do you know how many games coming to the Switch this year? No, really, please reply and tell me. Don’t be a troll and go quiet.

CorndogBurglar2700d ago (Edited 2700d ago )

Switch had more exclusives in 2018 and will have more exclusives in 2019 than Xbox and PS4 combined......

starchild2700d ago (Edited 2700d ago )

Actually, the Switch has a lot of exclusives.

"I’d like to increase the (amount of) games on smartphones that have a continuous stream of revenue."

A lot of companies are speaking on expanding where people play their games beyond just fixed consoles.

Definitely things to take into consideration for the gen after next.

porkChop2701d ago

I think the goal there is just to grow the market beyond only consoles, rather than replace consoles.

GameBoyColor2700d ago

And the real plan is exactly what he is saying about revenue, make money easily so they can use it in other projects. Mobile games just print money and that's what nintendo is looking for.

Jin_Sakai2701d ago

“Future Business Shift Could See Nintendo Move Away From Home Console Development“

All he’s saying is that if console business should decline they have other options. This does not mean they will back away from console in any way shape or form.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio30d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing30d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9230d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit30d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing30d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9230d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Take-Two CEO Once Again Side Steps Grand Theft Auto 6 Price Point

Strauss Zelnick says price of GTA 6 is being carefully considered and that Rockstar is focused on "making the most spectacular piece of entertainment on Earth."

Kuma30d ago

If GTA 6 abandons everything that made GTA 5 great, it will crash and burn right out of the gate. GTA 5 was funny and not at all PC. My worry is that they will cave to the PC crowd and ruin the vibes.

Eonjay30d ago

They got freaking BBLs twerking on the top of trucks for the gram, the freaking Flordia joker, and dude running down the stree in their undies and you are worried about it being 'too PC'? The internet has runied gamers. It doesn't matter how non-PC they make the game, you will all listen to the grifters telling you not to believe your lying eyes lol.

gigoran830d ago

"Rockstar Games’ co-founder and former VP of Development Jamie King said he envisions GTA 6 as a game that’s “maybe not quite as edgy or quite as funny” as its satirical predecessors."

oh yeah, totally internet grifters spreading rumors...

blacktiger30d ago

That's part of the plan, they destroyed you but they need to destroy the shareholders? Only 1 shre holder is the true elite that don't care

1nsomniac30d ago (Edited 30d ago )

Meh.., if it’s above £55 I ain’t buying it.

Rockstar are genuinely not half the company they used to be. I was a die hard GTA fan I’ve purchased every game and expansion and spin off day 1.

My opinion of GTA6 is that I can take it or leave it. Not bothered. They burnt too many bridges.

DaReapa30d ago (Edited 30d ago )

So they're actually leaving the door open for an L.A. Noire sequel? Nice!

VaNdAl30d ago (Edited 30d ago )

He should just come out and say it already it's getting stupid it's going to be a 100 bucks $200 for the special edition🤡🤡; 29315;🤣♿

Storm2330d ago

I won't be getting this game until I can get it for $70. SHoot, I could wait for it to be even lower. I don't need the game that badly as my backlog is still huge and I am enjoying playing other things.
