How Sony Can Bring Back Killzone

Jacob St-Amour from Link-Cable Writes: "At the very end of the PS3 era and into this current generation of consoles, Sony has been able to create magnificent experiences that are not only terrific games but also have pushed the boundaries of what video game storytelling should and will be. It started with The Last of Us and has continued with Horizon: Zero Dawn, God of War (2018) and most recently with Marvel’s Spider-Man and this trend will most likely continue right into the next PlayStation and for further video game generations to come. The great thing regarding these examples is that these are all in-house products and it shows the willingness to go ahead and create story-driven experiences above all else and should bode well for all other franchises under the Sony name, and today we will be talking about a specific entry that would benefit the most from this culture shift and that is no other than the Killzone series."

They just need to really smooth and fasten the gunplay and bring it back to the good storytelling in kz2+3. Shadowfall just felt so damn empty...

elazz2692d ago (Edited 2692d ago )

Nope. That doesn't sound like Killzone gameplay. I'd like it to have a heavy feeling like 2 or 3. It should remain gritty. They can improve on the storytelling though and take more aspects of the existing universe.

They can do a remake of 2 and 3 and make it one game and see how that does. The assets still hold up today.

Gameplay and feel of 2, features of 2 and more operations maps like in 3

FITgamer2691d ago

I agree. KZ 2 is one of my favorite FPS games ever. Both the single player and multi-player were great.

fr0sty2691d ago

Screw Killzone, they need to bring back Warhawk. My favorite PS3 game by far, unfortunately, is having its servers closed next month.

nucky642691d ago

i'd love a remake of #2......loved the gunplay/battles. and if they make a sequel, it should be more like #2 and not shadowfall......where i think KZ is at it's best is on a battlefield.

Dreamcatcher452692d ago

So we get another CoD? No thanks. KZ2 gunplay was perfect.

TheGamez1002691d ago

Oh jeez them disagrees though. I mean im a fan of kz, have played em all all the way through the campaigns including mercenary except 1 and loved em. I just mean less input lag, more control, and stable 60fps. Shouldnt all fps/action games be like this? The heavy feeling is good dont get me wrong, just needs improvements and more attractive gameplay I guess is what Im saying.

Loved everything about kz2 but the input lag and it controlled like a nightmare. Loved kz3s more controllability but it was too much like cod, and campaign was too damn short.

GoGoGadge72691d ago

What was bullshit about Shadowfall was that we spent a decade fighting SPACE NAZI's and then all of a sudden they wanted us to empathize with what was supposed to be an evil and ruthless race of people. I'm sorry. Sometimes.. GOOD v EVIL is a good thing. Not GOOD versus maybe kinda evil and they're evil but they're also oppressed and trying to defect. No. Stick with the story of KZ2 & 3. I want to kill me some Space Nazis dammit!

chazjamie2691d ago (Edited 2691d ago )

This is the complete opposite of what a killzone game should be. The problem with KZ 3 is that it was trying to conform. By doing so, they dumbed down the ai, made the game faster and as a result it felt light. It was no longer methodical. Then shadow fall comes a long to demonstrate the power of the ps4. It was a cute attempt, but the killzone name would die with that title.

I’ve just played Killzone: Shadow Fall recently and I enjoyed it a lot

Gunning down Helghasts will never get old

Shakengandulf2692d ago

I enjoyed it..
Wish it had more of that KZ2 war feel to it but still had fun.
Some lvls felt very complex, very detailed.

Shiken2691d ago (Edited 2691d ago )

I enjoyed Shadowfall as well. Very under appreciated in my eyes, but it did have quite a few flaws.

I do wish they did a mix of what they did with Killzone 2 and Mercenaries though. Those two games are the peak of the series IMO.

Dirtnapstor2691d ago

Horizon Zero Dawn? Same universe, paralleled timelines? If only this would be the case!

TKCMuzzer2692d ago (Edited 2692d ago )

Just remaster Killzone 2 , 60FPS and bring back the clan system. £14.99 or even better, free to PS+ members and let the good times roll

mafiahajeri2692d ago

Was in one of the best clans in the world for a time, the MP was just so good. That sound you got when you killed someone was addictive, and yes the clan system was epic, having matches where you had to be there at a certain time was way ahead of its time. The Valour system was great too, made you feel like you were playing for something, its beyond me how no game has made a simillar system.

Salaumans market and blood gracht 🤧💔

MrVux0002691d ago

Pyrrhus Rise man... it was a sniper heaven in Killzone 2.

KOIMOJO2691d ago

I was is Apes which was a big clan and stuck around till the end. Remember playing the revolver only “pistolas” matches like it was yesterday. Oh and playing From the time I woke up til I went to bed for a week one summer to get in the top 1% of all players for that damned trophy lol.

itBourne2692d ago

The clan system and tournament system in Killzone 2 was beyond amazing, and is a travesty that it went under the radar... every mp game should of stole that system and it should be a staple in multiplayer games today... instead its left forgotten and dead unfortunately

LoveSpuds2691d ago (Edited 2691d ago )

Maybe, but for Christ sake, NERF Radec, that fight was cheap in the worst possible way.

As far as the multiplayer goes, I think it was so under appreciated personally, it was an exceptional game.

WickedLester2692d ago (Edited 2692d ago )

My suggestions...

1. 60fps. I want this to be a standard for Killzone going forward. 30fps in a first person shooter bugs me now. We should never see that again.

2. Reboot the whole franchise with a renewed focus on story and character development. I love the concept of what the Killzone universe is. But a lot of the characters and dialogue in past games are very cringeworthy. Give it the same TLC that Horizon Zero Dawn got.

3. Go back to Killzone 2 style multiplayer.

Dreamcatcher452692d ago (Edited 2692d ago )

That's pretty much my list too. I'm a big sucker for story telling. If they can make that in the same league as recent Sony games then this could be one of the best games ever.

Helldivers 2 sparked renewed interest in Killzone. Do we deserve it?

Now, with most games these days, live service included, comes the inclusion of microtransactions. In Helldiver 2's case, these come in the form of Warbonds and the superstore. Some of them were a hit, others were a miss. But one of the superstore items that have sparked interest is the Killzone set. While this is nice, this would have much better served as a warbond. Putting it in the superstore comes off as greedy, but that's an issue for another video. More to the point, the Killzone franchise fanbase had taken note, and it sparked renewed interest in wanting the series to be revived.

lodossrage391d ago

lol well, as fans we'd naturally say that (yes myself included).

But given some of the complaints the series garnered over the years when it was available is why we asked it it was deserved

RaiderNation391d ago

I think it does. A complete reboot would be ideal with a better story and main protagonist. I love the asthetic of the Killzone universe, along with the premise of Earth warring with another planet of humanoid beings, and Earth possibly being the antagonists. They just need to develop a good main protagonist and have better writing. A Killzone reboot in the latest version of the Decima engine would be incredible.

Abear21391d ago

If it makes dollars it makes sense, that’s how these decisions are made.

Clearly Sony or whoever makes this decision isn’t convinced Killzone would sell enough to support the cost of development. They also have a hit with Horizon that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and prints money.

JunonZanon391d ago

A trilogy remaster with KZ2 MP would be a good start

Cacabunga390d ago

With Move and sharpshooter support? I can dream!

lodossrage390d ago

considering the time we live in, it would more than likely get a VR option to replace the move support

Jingsing391d ago

Not unless they come up with some amazing marketing campaign otherwise it will just perform as bad as Halo these days.

Killzone composer would love a remaster trilogy, “don’t know if a new game” would be successful

Killzone and Horizon Zero Dawn composer Joris de Man would like PlayStation to make a remaster trilogy, but not a new game.

Id like a remaster trilogy and the ps vita version remastered as well. It should also have killzone 2 multiplayer

Cacabunga396d ago

Yes make them start with KZ2 multiplayer remake as standalone!! I would play the carp out of it.

INMATEofARKHAM396d ago

Knowing Sony and how the Uncharted remasters shipped without their MP components they'll likely do the same with Killzone.

Outside_ofthe_Box396d ago

Then there's no point in remastering it imo. KZ2's MP was the best thing about Killzone.

Knightofelemia396d ago

I'd day one a remaster trilogy I'd even day one a remaster trilogy or Resistance as well.

GamingManiac394d ago

Same! But with KZ2 and R2 multiplayer!

JEECE396d ago

I'm glad they stopped making Killzone before people started saying "mid," so I am spared seeing all the braindead "Killzone is actually mid" takes that people inevitably would have offered up in lieu of legitimate analysis.

INMATEofARKHAM396d ago

They were mid, tbh. Just the best Sony put out in the 1st person/exclusive department.

RedDeadLB396d ago

I don't know about that. They weren't the greatest shooters out there, sure, but nothing even came close to the atmosphere of 2 and 3. The feeling of weight, the animations, the style, the multiplayer and the trophies made it one hell of a game. All shooters are in essence point and shoot, but few make you feel the way Killzone made you feel while doing it.

senorfartcushion396d ago

They will cast a woman on one of the lead roles, just like how they did it in the past, but toda's nerds will find an excuse to be angry about it.

ibrake4naps396d ago

It should be a crime that they didn't put out a version of part 2 that supports their VR headset. A no-brainer...

I would really like a remastered killzone trilogy on ps5. I wouldn't mind even just a killzone 2 remake or remastered with multiplayer but I think it's time for sony to revisit the franchise and do something big.

isarai491d ago

Id love that, with 120fos modes Augh😩

Cacabunga491d ago

KZ2 was and still is masterclass.
KZ3 was great too but KZ2 had a better multi.
SF was not as great but solid game still.

We just want KZ2 remake!

Becuzisaid491d ago

@cacabunga
Don't leave out that Vita game (Mercenaries?). That game was phenomenal. I rank it between KZ2 and 3.

Army_of_Darkness490d ago

Acknowledging the current trends of Sony, I would say if they were to make a new Killzone, they would probably remake it into WokeZone😂

Knushwood Butt490d ago

The isometric game on PSP was a blast too. Had a really solid feel to it. Hope that gets a release on PS Plus Premium.

Begging for remastered games is just so lame... Killzone was mid. Nothing more. Make new stuff.

TriniOutsider489d ago

They're making new stuff...

FPS_D3TH489d ago

lol yeah about all that new stuff….

chicken_in_the_corn491d ago

It needs a new game. Better yet, a new stand alone trilogy.

robtion491d ago

Killzone 2 was INSANE when it came out. The look/graphics were so far ahead of everything else at the time and the story and gameplay were top tier. It still looks better than a lot of games that release now.
