Breaking up families? Harsh, but I do know it is an addiction. Kids in my area don't even play out in the streets anymore because they're busy playing Fortnite.

kevnb2607d ago (Edited 2607d ago )

Oh dont be silly, kids arent even allowed to play outside anymore. The internet has everyone scared of everything. Also, the media could have found one or two families having this issue and reported it as if its happening everywhere, they always seem to do this. Someone probably thinks Fortnite is evil and has the money to promote lies/misleading articles.

I was born in 87 and glad of my childhood I was always playing out with my friends, these days like you said kids don’t play out at all

PapaBop2607d ago

Damn straight! Nothing quite like going around places you're not supposed to, climbing trees, making dens etc etc, it wasn't a good day unless you came home with at least one or two cuts and scratches.

Hardiman2607d ago

Amen, I was born in 80 and didn't get a sibling till I was 8 and we lived in a rural area so I was always out in the woods and even making it to the Elk River. My parents would've killed me if they knew half the stuff I got into but I had fun and my imagination grew! I feel for kids now. My kids friends think we're weird because we got out into the woods or go on adventures.

AngelicToucH2607d ago

damn right, i was born in 87 as well. God knows how many times i climbed trees and build forts out of snow...and many more times i broke my head...but god damn it those memories are the best.

rainslacker2606d ago

I was young in the 80's, not even hitting the teens until 88, and despite being a huge gamer, my parents still made me go outside and play. I still enjoyed doing that.

We didn't have crazy things like phones we could carry around with us, and if we wanted to get a phone call, we had to be at home.

Can't imagine there is any way in hell my parents would have given me a cell phone if I couldn't buy it myself, and for the most part, anyone under the age of 15 probably doesn't really talk enough on the phone to have their own anyways. Parents only ever brought me a NES and Genesis, and the CD attachment for the Turbo-Grafx. I brought all my systems otherwise, and got the money from mowing lawns and raking leaves, and eventually my first job at 13.

If I ever decided to play instead of doing what my parents told me to do, they'd still take away those systems from me.

Dark_Knightmare22606d ago (Edited 2606d ago )

A fellow 87er hell yeah. I too had the cliche, quintessential childhood growing up where my brother and I had a close group of friends who played sandlot football, baseball, basketball,r ollerblading, bike riding, skateboarding, hide and seek, tag, staying at each other houses, playing in the woods etc everyday. It’s damn sad that you barely see kids playing outside anymore and I’m just glad I was able to experience that before things changed so drastically

DrumBeat2606d ago

Yep. 81' here.

Also @ Papa, I can directly relate. We climbed our local schools and spent the night atop them, lol.

VariantAEC2601d ago

@AngelicToucH
I didn't break my head but also grew up playing outside. 7 head injuries.
Paying for it now though. Radiology confirms a brain herniation. MRI machines weren't available where I lived as a I was a kid though. Just walked it off. Good times for sure but don't land on your head... Or get struck by lightning.

Kids barely play outside since smartphones came out. Can’t blame fortnite for this.

WANNAGETHIGH2607d ago

Am I the only one that dose not like this game and think is overrated??

Sunny_D2606d ago

Dude that’s like a popular opinion on this site lol.

Gr8saiyaman882607d ago

Like kids weren't already inside playing Minecraft for the last decade anyways

badz1492606d ago

I don't even let my kids play fortnite. an occasional Minecraft sessions are all they are getting but playing online? NOPE. too many bad influence from the net right now. gotta protect the kids somehow

My 5 min Fortnite addiction Rehab.

Take the phone, tablet, PC or console away from the kids, tell the parents to not be so feckless and charge them £1000 for the privilege.

rainslacker2606d ago (Edited 2606d ago )

But it's only $30 a month per line in the family plan. At that price, you can't afford to not give your kids a phone. what if they might possibly need one perhaps one time a year...maybe, but probably not. At least as a parent, you'll have the security of knowing that they won't be without a way to get in touch with you, or emergency services, on that .05% chance that something bad might happen.

How dare you cut off a childs access to socialization. How do you expect them to learn how to behave around other people in the real world. You heartless, evil man.

SegaGamer2607d ago

I would go as far to say that it isn't good AT ALL.

Snookies122606d ago

Not anymore. It used to be, back when it actually had some form of direction. Now they just throw whatever the hell they think up into the giant blender of randomness that this game has become. If Attention Deficit Disorder were a game, it would be Fortnite.

TheEnigma3132607d ago

Gotta remember it's a free game on a lot of platforms. I'm not a fan of it, but kids love these type of games to play with their friends. It's mainly kids and teens playing this.

MurDocINC2606d ago

That's the problem, no sense in values.

OnlyThoseOnTheFence2607d ago

This is actually a tragedy in this country. We're supposed to feel bad for these idiots.

kevnb2607d ago (Edited 2607d ago )

No its not, dont let the media make this out to be much more than what it is. They do this all the time, in a country of 350 million plus they find a few instances of something happening and report it as if its an epidemic. Some old rich guy probably paid them to do it because he doesnt like video games.
"Vitany’s anguish is echoed by an army of other parents, teachers and bosses around the world grappling with a game that sucks up hours of players’ time -- sometimes to the detriment of other activities." what does that even mean? A few dozen people? People who just read an article like what bloomberg wrote and decided something needed to be done? This isnt even news...

Im surprised I got a disagree, later in the bloomberg article it says "The industry has also drawn criticism following mass shootings that involved individuals linked to video games.". How is it not obvious what they are doing?

Count_Bakula2606d ago

The same shit was said about World of Warcraft, people failing out of school, getting dehydrated, losing social lives, family, friends, ect. This is just the next in line.

Silly Mammo2607d ago (Edited 2607d ago )

We have a novel way of handling Fortnite in our family. If it gets too disruptive to our son's school work or sports, he doesn't play it anymore. He's in middle school and he gets to play it for a limited amount of time on weekends. It's called parenting.

kevnb2607d ago (Edited 2607d ago )

I think 99.9999% percent of people do the same, but the media found a few people having problems and you know how they operate. Misleading complete bs. Its like believing all kids eat tide pods, just because a few did... People have no perspective on what information like this, 350 million plus people in the usa... you can find people doing just about anything.

MecheSlays2607d ago

Oh for sure. That’s why kids are so messed up now because social media and electronics do the parenting and parents are reasoning with the kids instead of letting them know what you say goes

kevnb2607d ago (Edited 2607d ago )

Kids have been messed up like this in the united states for generations now, military industry complex is a much bigger factor in making violence acceptable. The military is worshiped and they solve every little problem with violence, people even get upset when they give foreign aid but no problem dropping 60k bombs a year. You cant blame this on things that the rest of the world have, its something uniquely american.
