Why the Red Dead Redemption 2 Tutorial Is a Failure

Rockstar's cowboy epic might be a game of the year contender, but the Red Dead Redemption 2 tutorial is a filled with pointless objectives and over complicated explanations.

Why do things always have to be so black and white. Either excellent or failure. Always siding up into an opinion using extremes. Was it perfect? No. Was it long? Yes. Dit you learn what you needed? Yes. Does that make it a failure? No

It did its job but could have been better. Man people are so harsh lately.

UnHoly_One2727d ago

That's how everything is nowadays.

Everything to one extreme or the other, just look at politics...

By the way, your post was probably the best post I've ever read in my entire life.

;-)

Zeref2727d ago

nah, people just like to nitpick for clicks

cooperdnizzle2727d ago

Yeah I can’t take it anymore to man. People like us will push it back though.

bignosepig2726d ago

I 100% agree with you. But you're forgetting that people need users to click and read their articles. If they don't make the title sound like the world is ending they won't get enough clicks. Unfortunately as a result of this we are misinformed.

RavageX2727d ago

I guess people really have nothing to write about.

michaelknight352727d ago

I know i wish they would come on and put a update to fixed buds in the game

Deathdeliverer2727d ago

I think a lot of stuff should have been explained and unlocked early on. To be SEVERAL hours into the game and still having fast travel locked although the stage coach is right there, guns locked, although I have money for them at the store, and just now finding out how to quick raise a mask is kinda ridiculous.
Personally I think they should have had a young Arthur dream session where you get a lot of that stuff done. In conversations you hear all this stuff Dutch taught him. That was a perfect tutorial opportunity. Hell the game told me ONE time how to auto follow in formation when riding with others and I forgot it. It’s nowhere in the “help” section in game either. I love the game, but explaining things or at least giving you the option to find more help is definitely a weakness. And if I can’t fast travel why not let auto pathing on the horse be possible? Damn I’m to the point that I will turn it off if my next mission is across the map.

Profchaos2727d ago

Auto paths are possible on the horse. Also I unlocked fast travel at about the 4 hour mark but barely use it I find I miss way to many wow moments in the world if I do

Deathdeliverer2727d ago

I don’t move forward until ALL side quest are done. If one pops up after doing a few main quest I won’t do any more mains until the new side quest are done. If I rushed through the main quest maybe but where’s the fun in that? I enjoy the world.

Deathdeliverer2726d ago

How do I auto path the horse? Like I set a waypoint and it just packs me there?

Teflon022727d ago

why's a late unlock for fast travel a issue? I personally hater fast travel in 90% of games.

JackBNimble2727d ago

Fast travel being unlocked at 4 or 5 hours in a 65 hour story driven game, is actually pretty dam good.
And certain guns will be locked if you have low Honor, it's just the way it is.

RememberThe3572727d ago

I still haven't used it yet. The only places I can travel to I have massive bounties in...

badz1492727d ago

the only reason the game got to that "65 hour story" is because they purposely make is slow pace as hell and the gameplay tedious. if everything is fast-paced and fluid like Spider-man, I bet it won't even be 20 hours

Realms2726d ago

I had a problem with the game as well nowhere does it explain that certain aspects of the game like hunting are tied to the main story progression so if you decided to go hunt early on to upgrade satchels you would be wasting your time. I had to research online how to do this since it was never explained in the game. I can see why some people have gripes with how some things where done since they aren't explained. As for fast travel you have to actually buy the map and wait util you relocate your camp something I discovered by accident.

King_Noctis2727d ago

I love the tutorial. It set thing up for an epic adventure.

“Red Dead Redemption 2 tutorial is a filled with pointless objectives and over complicated explanations.”

They explained you how to shoot, loot, hunt, ride horse, talk to the npc, and even how to rob a train. Isn’t that what tutorial is about?

PhantomS422727d ago

It takes 5 hours of extremely slow agonizing annoyances that don't go away after the tutorial. Pretty sure any other game that has released in the last decade had a lynch mob after the developers for making a 5 hours tutorial...but let's continue to give Rockstar a free pass despite someone of huge flaws with the game. Sure it taught you to hunt by following the white trail line in the white snow which made that section unbearable. "Go loot the house" and the second you step in the house "what's taking so long Arthur". Trudge through deep snow and go extremely slow, okay fine it should get faster after we get out of the snow...nope same snail speed through the entire game and even slower in the camp where everything and everyone is horribly spread out. The attention to detail and how well-written characters are is the best part of the game and deserves the praise but outside of that, it's really rough.

Elda2727d ago

Agreed. You can't express how you feel about RDR2 to some of these fans of the game because their not trying to understand your valid point. They want you to know & understand how they're enjoying the game & there are no flaws first & foremost.

chiefJohn1172727d ago (Edited 2727d ago )

Outside of the forced walking in camp it sounds like that's all you not the game cause I don't share any of that. Had no issue follow the trail or looting the house. If those two alone got on your nerves then lol this game ain't for you. If that was a tutorial that was the best tutorial ever. Every tutorial I've played have been boring and I just wanted to speed through or skip.
Eldra y'all points don't be valid

King_Noctis2727d ago

@phantom

You made a great point there friend. It is great for me but that doesn’t mean it would be great for other people.

@elda

Just stop. No one is saying this game is without flaw. You go on every RDR article spouting the same bs.

Jinger2727d ago

But the tutorial isn't JUST a tutorial. It is setting up all the characters, the plot, the events leading up to the current plot. Explaining your key enemies as well as telling you how to play. Plus, it isnt 5 hours until you set up your camp and have free roam. More like 2-3.

You think Rockstar views Red Dead 2 as a failure because it didn't sell 150m copies?

jznrpg168d ago

3 billion or so in revenue not including online stuff I’m sure they don’t

SethNW168d ago

I am pretty sure they don't. It was profitable and made them a lot of money. Not GTA5 money but far from failure. Maybe it is lower priority franchise, due to being smaller, but that is about the lowest they would put it as. Only thing they do consider failure is RDR2 Online, unlike GTA5 Online, that RDR2 Online flopped. Hence why it got less support. And when it come to profits, sales for both combined don't come close to GTA Online microtansactions. Hence why everything very quickly got canceled and GTA Online was top priority, so no GTA6 for a long time, no DLC for GTA5, despite there being 5 DLCs planned, at least I think it was 5, give or take one. But as I see it, they needed to rejuvenate interest and all, hence why GTA6 eventually is getting made. But what they are really looking forward to is refresh of Online.

ZeekQuattro167d ago

Only in terms of the online aspect of the game. They didn't support it as much as they did GTA V Online. I remember people being pissed about that.

jznrpg168d ago

I own a few GTAs but never played them. I love Red Dead though

Yui_Suzumiya162d ago (Edited 162d ago )

Boring and overrated. Red Dead Redemption is pretty good though. The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy is my personal GOAT. We need more stuff like that from TooKyo.

victorMaje168d ago

I must be one of the few who are fine with the GTA6 delay. People treat that game like it’s the 2nd coming lol.

FIELDMARSHALL_P167d ago

My daughter asked me how I felt about I shrugged and said I don't care gives me time to finish up games I already have. It's all good let them make the best game they can.

RedDevils168d ago

Wish they make another Manhunt or Bully.

gold_drake167d ago

damn, thats a ridiculous number

The world they built is pretty amazing. Unfortunately, the game was mostly boring to me. I definitely had fun in some parts, but it didn't do it for me as a whole like the first one did. I loved RDR so much.

The budgets and time it takes to make games these days is out of control. Such a big risk. If a game isn't a huge hit, it is often it for a studio. Scary. I really miss the PS2 and PS3 days where studeios could make 4 games in a generation and take risks in making something new. And so many were using their own engines. Those were the days.

neutralgamer1992172d ago

Agreed. I love RDR but couldn't get into RDR2. The animations take forever and game slows you down on purpose. It won't let you have fun because R* want us to play the game they want to. I know millions love RDR2 and I even bought and own it. But just wasn't for me.

It's like comparing GTA4 to saints row 2. One game was about fun while the other was about realism and that's coming from someone who beat GTA4 many times. I much rather a game be fun to play than chase realism

YodaCracker172d ago

GTA IV’s realism is what made it so much more fun for me. I loved experimenting with the physics.

Storm23171d ago

I bought RDR2 also. Put 100+ hours into it and beat it our of respect for Rockstar and all the people saying it was the greatest game ever. RDR blew my mind but might also have been the best time in gaming for me personally. l loved that PS3 gen so much.

I am excited to see what GTA6 is like.
