The Xbox One faltered, but it seems Microsoft is learning. It could rise from the ashes, all because it took the time to correct its mistakes.

More like survive, then win.

M$ always plays it safe.
They always wait for someone else to innovate and then they imitate, and try to “improve” on.
Name one M$ product that they brought to mass market, first, before anyone else, and took all the risk?

Very few I can think of....

CyberSentinel2752d ago (Edited 2752d ago )

Sony had PlayStation Eye (PS3), and EyeToy before that on PS2.

Steam is better on PC then Live, and came first. Live on Xbox might be the only risk they took.

crazyCoconuts2752d ago

@Cyber, ok, but by that standard PSVR wasn't the first VR headset either. I agree with what youre saying about MS, but I think they should at least get credit where they tried. Kinect was clearly more advanced than other camera accessories, and they took a big risk with it, especially with Xbox One. I know it failed but they at least took the risk.

darthv722752d ago

@cyber... Steam may have been on PC first but it did not have achievements until much later. something they added due to the success of the 360. Live being successful on 360 lead to the improvements of steam as well as the creation of psn.

Sega had the dream eye for DC before the eyetoy. Hell even the gameboy had the gameboy camera before that. Live vision on 360 is akin to the eyetoy. PS eye was an evolution to the eyetoy but the kinect was a revolution to the rest. So much so that even sony adopted the same dual lens setup for the ps4 eye.

Ms made broadband and hdd's standard. something Sony had as options for the PS2 but then adopted as standard for the PS3. does it really matter who does what first so long as it ushers in change that is eventually adopted as a standard?

JaguarEvolved2751d ago (Edited 2751d ago )

Microsoft may win what? This sort of talk is the musing of a silly person. Microsoft has sold 35 million consoles while Sony sold over 86 million so far. Microsoft lost and will now focus on a different strategy of trying to stream games to multiple devices and they will surely sell less consoles next generation. This generation is over and it'll be the same next generation

Rude-ro2751d ago

Kinect was purchased from the e3 floor.. and never lived up to its sales pitch

ApocalypseShadow2751d ago (Edited 2751d ago )

Crazy coconuts,

Kinect on PS2
https://m.youtube.com/watch...

Dr. Marks was working with the tech long before Microsoft bought the tech out from under him.

He even talks about it here 1:00 hour in video when he was working with Prime sense. Watch the question section for 5 minutes after that.
https://m.youtube.com/watch...
You can tell he was pissed off but had to move on after Microsoft pulled a dirty move acting like they were the originators of the tech. So shady.

They don't innovate. They copy or buy.

Brazz2751d ago

I give you xbox live. Xbox live, achiviments are the base of modern online consoles, and MS did this first.

sinspirit2750d ago

@darthv72

Lets get one thing straight. There is a huge difference in innovating and adopting. There is also a huge difference in making somethimg standard, and being the first to do it.

Online consoles and HDD inclusion were always going to happen. Live isn't the reason for PSN's existence.

DreamCast and the PSX had features like online, HDD, home button, etcetera before other consoles anyways. Nintendo is responsible for adopting several things from arcades into console form, like analogs and rumble. Sony streamlined the modern dual analog controller design though.

A prime example of making something standard is PS3 with Bluray, which we all know is absolutely the main reason that the format won against HD-DVD. Sony has also set a standard with game recording built in. Right out of the gate with on the fly 15 minute saved videos on a secondary processor. This isn't a no-brainer feature that would have been included eventually since progress would demand it. They just decided to do it. Now the other platforms do it too.

Sony has in-house R&D that have demonstrations of tracking controllers with shapes and lights, like Move, back in 2000. MS finds other companies to design and innovate for them. It's all outsourced, even 343i Halo's storylines are outsourced to several generic sci-fi writers which is why it becomes saturated and cliche.

Kinect was already made by a company, that visited Nintendo and Sony, whom said no, before they went to MS.

Excuse after excuse, hype after hype, and pity after pity for XBox won't bring more players. These articles are all wishful thinking. There is even less room for MS in the market now that Nintendo has made a big comeback, and Sony's momentum has still been kept.

Godmars2902750d ago (Edited 2750d ago )

@CyberSentinel:
Sony didn't put as much on the Eye as MS did. The XB1 was built around and suffered for it.

@Brazz:
"Xbox live, achiviments are the base of modern online consoles, and MS did this first."

Meh, and consoles have suffered for it. As far as i'm concerned.

Dragonscale2750d ago (Edited 2750d ago )

The only thing innovative about xbox live was the paywall, oh and horse armour lol. Kinect was sh1t3 lol and ms failed attempt to grab the wii crowd.

“It could rise from the ashes, all because it took the time to correct its mistakes.“

Xbox doesn’t stand a chance even if they fix most their problems. PlayStation is a far more popular platform worldwide. They also have the most talented 1st party studios on earth.

Bobafret2750d ago

Things can always change, I remember when it seemed Nintendo would always be the market leader.

Realms2750d ago

@Bobfret

Yes things can change but Nintendo handed the crown over to Sony because they refuse to be competitive with their console hardware or allow for more mature theme games on their console. Either way as long as Sony keeps delivering game experiences like God of War and Spiderman they will be fine.

Gunstar752751d ago

Imagine being a clueless as you 😂😂😂

scofios2751d ago

Ha ha maybe in another dimension .

Sitdown2751d ago

Windows? Microsoft office? Standard wireless controller? Home button on controller? Console achievements? Customize faceplates? Hdd standard? HD DVD? 1st party game pass? Ability to add your soundtrack to games. Friend's list? Cross chat?

BehindTheRows2751d ago (Edited 2751d ago )

HD DVD was an utter failure and NOT innovative at that. I get you’re trying to make a point, but let’s be real here.

Next, the ‘standard wireless controller’ was outdated before it could even take off - Bluetooth controllers were far more effective.

Sitdown2750d ago

Again goal post moving. You highlighting that HD DVD failed and was not innovating, just simply proves my point against the original poster.....it was a risk. Oh, and please quote where I said HD DVD was a success. You highlighting Bluetooth controllers still doesn't refute that the 360 launched with wireless controllers first in the console space.

CarlDechance2750d ago

lol....you led with Windows and Microsoft Office? You do realize that MS was not the innovators behind operating systems, word processors, and spreadsheets, right? Heck, even Powerpoint was an application they purchased from another company.

The rest....maybe, but the first two....nope.

sinspirit2750d ago (Edited 2750d ago )

@sitdown

There is a huge difference in innovating and adopting. There is also a huge difference in making something standard, and being the first to do it.

Online consoles, wireless peripherals, and HDD inclusion were always going to happen. Really? Faceplates are important innovation? Did anyone start doing this? No? Oh. So, why did you list this and Windows software that means nothing to XBox?

DreamCast and the PSX had features like online, HDD, home button, etcetera before other consoles anyways. Nintendo is responsible for adopting several arcade features like rumble and analogs first. Sony created the streamlined dual analog controller layout which everyone uses now, and thank god they added R3 and L3 with PS2.

You do know that Bluray was developed by several top media companies, and Sony was one of the leaders in its development, right? They actually created it. MS just adopts things that others do first. I can't think of a single thing that wouldn't logically have been done without the XBox's existence. They didn't even use HDMI on the first 360 models. They provided great competition early on and pushed online features forward, but also screwed the consumers by trying to be first with features that PC had free for years, which they charged users for. Mandatory online subscriptions, mandatory minimum pricing for DLC, which is why Valve started supporting Sony with Portal 2 since they could release free small updates just because they want to, whereas MS made developers have to charge users a minimum for nearly everything so MS gets a cut, and/or pay MS to distribute small downloads, charging developers to release updates, and advertisements in your face even though you already pay for the online service providing ads. They took advantage of unweary consumers. The innovations they really brought with online wasn't the online ecosystem. It was the measures they took to squeeze profit out of console gamers that didn't know how good PC had it. Oh, and they had paying subscribers host games on their own Internet which they also paid for. Ridiculous.

BehindTheRows2750d ago (Edited 2750d ago )

Moving goalposts? I always chuckle at such generic expressions.

Point? You mostly named things that were either NOT risks or natural progressions of technology. As an example, wireless controllers were not a risk at all. Everyone was headed that way.

The original poster was spot on. They took very few risks. They only got as far as they did last gen because of aid from some of Sony’s missteps. They very much played it safe, unlike a real risk that was the Wii.

Godmars2902750d ago

"Play it safe"?

The OG Xbox may have done that, at the cost of focusing on the US/PC market at a time PC gaming was cost prohibitive to the common consumer, but then any "caution" shown there was thrown out the with the rushing of the 360 to market and the RRoD. From there, because they could claim the US market, they devolved towards a "can do no wrong" mentality that lead to Kinect and the XB1 launch. Then the firing of the at the time CEO and several reversals, yet no real change in mentality.

Which, among other things, is why we get articles like this.

marioJP872750d ago (Edited 2750d ago )

Online console gaming, where Sony has never been able to compete, even when they offered online gaming free on PS3 vs Microsoft charging for it.
And this is coming from a hardcore Sony gamer.

BehindTheRows2750d ago

Interesting. Never realized PSN wasn’t competing with LIVE. Funny how that works.

Tell us, why can’t it compete?

Nintentional2750d ago (Edited 2750d ago )

You’re literally describing Sony. Almost everything Sony has done, hardware wise, has been because of what Nintendo has done. D-pads, shoulder buttons, motion controls, portable gaming, analog sticks, cross positioned buttons, start, select, the PS1 classic, etc, etc. Hell, they even took pages from Microsoft. Microsoft had achievements, and charged for online, Sony came out with trophies and charged for online 🤦🏻‍♂️Sony fanboys 🤦🏻‍♂️

XiNatsuDragnel2752d ago

Survive likely but not win, next gen is different

Wallstreet372751d ago

Win? The delusion is always grand with these guys lol

letsa_go2750d ago

Only 50 million consoles to go!

TheSaint2750d ago

This gen is over, I'm not sure why anyone would think otherwise.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio16d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing16d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit16d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing16d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
