The Nintendo Switch is Running Into a Predictable Nintendo Problem

While the Nintendo Switch is certainly a hit, and a radical departure from the clear failure of the Wii U, fans are starting to see signs that Nintendo is once again dealing with an old problem specific to the company in the last few console races.

PhoenixUp2768d ago

“This year, both Sony and Microsoft also have at least one solid holiday exclusive each in the form of PS4’s Spider-Man and Xbox One’s Forza Horizon 4.”

Forza Horizon 4? Lmao. As great as that game is, it’s not going to help push hardware numbers that other major exclusives like Spider-Man and Super Smash Bros Ultimate will do this season.

pcz2766d ago

Smash Bros ultimate is little more than a special edition of the Wii u smash Bros.

Nintendo are getting lazy

King_Noctis2766d ago

Comments like this make me scratch my head so much.

Literal_Cringe2766d ago

If it was still March 2018, I would have believed you, but after everything they have shown from then to now, I would say you're delusional.

wraith99992766d ago

thats 100% not true, as an avid owner of wii u smash (Which i also thought was dumb lit)

DarXyde2766d ago

1. No.

2. Does that make Gran Turismo or Forza little more than special editions of all of their predecessors? What about sports games?

Segata2766d ago

Most idiotic and ignorant comment holy hell rofl! Let's put aside the roster, modes, stages, mechanics that are so vastly different than Smash 4 and then mention it's running on a brand new engine built from the ground up just for Switch. Shall we go into how old stages are rebuilt in the new engine? You may as well say SFV is just SFIV or Tekken 7 is just Tekken 6 or Mortal Kombat X is just Mortal Kombat 9.

Snookies122766d ago

No... Just, no... Please actually pay attention next time you look at Smash Ultimate. Because you're not looking at the right game apparently.

Wrex3692766d ago

Wouldn't that logic apply to literally every fighting game then? Returning characters, stages, music.. hmm?

rainslacker2766d ago

It'll still.move units though.

Nodoze2766d ago

It begs the question...what the heck are they doing? The dev cycle for ports and the small amount of added content is not even close to a full title release. What are the Nintendo developers working on?

AirJohnston2766d ago

The fact that 52 people agreed with this is insane. People on this site have no idea what they’re talking about most the time

jagermaster6192765d ago

Even though it is a new game and not a special edition from the Wii u game (idiot) I'm glad I never played it so it will be an even greater experience for me! Last smash I played was on GameCube, can't wait for this one!

PhoenixUp2766d ago

Dude stop.

You must be blind if you honestly believe that SSBU is nothing more than a GOTY Edition of SSB4.

Concertoine2766d ago (Edited 2766d ago )

Its got 20 more fighters than 4 and like 45 more stages.

Its more like every smash game rolled into 1, with some new stages and characters for good measure.

The way the game plays looks totally different than 4 which was very dodge-spammy with long stocks. Ultimate is a 3 stock game whereas SSB4 was a 2 stock.

Obviously they built upon SSB4 assets, but imagine how long this game wouldve taken if it didnt? It was the perfect time to do what Ultimate sets out to do.

TheLeapist2766d ago

You replied in the wrong spot. I was really confused for a second there.

King_Noctis2766d ago

It has new engine, better graphic, much more fighters and stage, more mode, brand new single player campaign, new features like Spirit, echo fighters, and even a music box.

If that is a SSB4 GOTY editon, then Nintendo must have gone the extra 100 miles to make it.

Segata2766d ago

Concertoine

It's not using Smash 4 assets. It's a brand new engine. Also look at the differences in Twilight Princess stage for example. They remade/ rebuilt it. This game has different lighting and models.

zivtheawesome2766d ago

you are right in saying FH4 wouldn't push hardware but for the wrong reason. it would have, if FH3 didn't exist already that already pushed all that hardware.

Doomster19712766d ago

@PhoenixUp I'm not too sure about that mate. I bought an X1 last year (to go alongside my PS4) for the Forza Horizon series. I knew how good they pretty much were (I have the first one on the 360) and I wanted to play them without resorting to buying an expensive PC (which I can't afford).

Vasto2766d ago (Edited 2766d ago )

I bet if Gran Turismo would have just released with a 90+ Meta you would not be saying it wont push sales this holiday for PS4.

Forza Horizon 3 was last reported with 10 Million players and Forza Horizon 4 launch was douuble Forza Horizon 3.

https://www.windowscentral....

https://www.reddit.com/r/xb...

Its a racer so of course it wont push sales like Spider Man or Smash but its still an amazing game for Xbox owners to play this holiday just like Spider Man is for PS4 and Smash is for Switch.

SwampthingsSon2766d ago

You have posted a perfect example of how to tell if one is obsessed with a competing company: How the hell do you snag one line from a Nintendo article and try to pretend you’re still normal? You can’t.

Gaming_Guru2766d ago

It won’t help with much hardware numbers if you can get it on PC, it’s like relaying on exclusive content with a multi platform game.

blanka45452766d ago

forza 4 is on pc no exclusive idiots lol! ps4 exclusive spiderman that's right fools!

Tross2766d ago

@PhoenixUp I think sites like this feel obligated to mention whatever XB1 exclusives are out, whether they're on par with those of their competitors or not, as that way they sound neutral in the console war. Of course, that might also be part of the reason why Xbox executives have a difficult time seeing the difference in their lineup when compared to the competition.

Neonridr2768d ago

pretty sure Pokemon and Smash will sell more this holiday season than anything else releasing.. just sayin'

TheDreamCorridor2766d ago

Red Dead Redemption II has probably sold about just over 20 million at this point.

Do you REALLY think that either of those games would hit anything close to those numbers?

Neonridr2766d ago

I don't really consider October to be part of the Holiday season usually that is reserved for November - December.

shadowraiden2766d ago

red dead is both consoles though kinda unfair to compare both to 1 console. considering the Switch is outselling the others.
also you then have to take into account Nintendo has been making PROFIT from each console sale since day 1, Xbox and PS4 didnt make profit for each console on launch they actually cost both companies money.

also has Red Dead really pushed console sales for either console? i doubt its had much impact on overall console sales.

also Smash Bro's will hit huge numbers for a single game, Pokemon will also hit massive numbers.

King_Noctis2766d ago (Edited 2766d ago )

RDR2 is on two consoles though. But if we were to combined Smash and Pokemon sales into one, they could do as much numbers as RDR2.

Dark_Knightmare22766d ago

No way has rdr 2 sold 20 million yet

BehindTheRows2766d ago

@shadowraiden: Switch is not outselling the PS4.

Ricegum2766d ago

Lol. Red Dead 2 hasn't sold anywhere near 20 million 😂

DarXyde2766d ago

Neonridr,

It doesn't really matter if you don't count October, now does it?

I think it does count since it falls into the same quarter of the year. RDR2 will very likely take the crown. It's a seriously popular R* game and it's multiplatform.

Granted, I know without a shadow of a doubt that I will personally enjoy Smash more than anything releasing this season, but it doesn't matter. Smash will do very well, but it won't share RDR2's commercial success. I think Smash deserves it more based on fun factor, but it's not my decision to make for others.

ShadowWolf7122766d ago

If they were mainline Pokemon games, sure.

But given they're very gimmicky spinoffs that wanna be glorified companion apps for Pokemon GO...

Sono4212766d ago

Look this article is idiotic, Smash Ultimate will do HUGE numbers. It's easily gonna push hardware as well, but these nitnendo loyalists like Neondir need to get a grip and stop throwing Pokemon out there like these Let's Go games are anything special. Will they do ok? Of course, it's pokemon, but will do anywhere close to the numbers the main series does? I would bet not. They aren't major titles, they're literally the old games but with upresed 3DS models with Pokemon go gimmicks thrown in, don't kid yourself, they are nothing compared to main entries, so stop throwing pokemon out there like "omgz Smash and POKEMON this holiday, HUGE holiday season!"

Theknightofnights2766d ago

"Smash is always a staple of any Nintendo generation, though it will likely not outsell last year’s Mario Odyssey or Breath of the Wild."

Actually, Smash has the possibility of outselling both of those. Melee outsold Sunshine, Windwaker, and Twilight Princess (Gamecube release). Brawl outsold Galaxy 1, 2, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword. Smash Wii U outsold Super Mario 3D Land, WW HD, TP HD, and BotW (Wii U release), and Smash 3DS outsold all the 3DS Zelda releases.

Sirk7x2766d ago (Edited 2766d ago )

Smash 64 (5.55 Million) also outsold:
Pokémon Stadium – 5.45 Million
Donkey Kong 64 – 5.27 Million
Diddy Kong Racing – 4.88 Million
Star Fox 64 – 4.03 Million
Banjo-Kazooie – 3.63 Million

It was the fifth best selling game on the console.

Segata2766d ago

Wasn't until Melee that the series really took off. Smash 64 is practically a prototype that had little budget and Nintendo almost said no to. It was brand new and unproven.

wraith99992766d ago

@Segata, that being said tho that game was stupidly good

JimmyDM902766d ago

Yeah long term it will probably outsell every Nintendo switch game except Mario Kart.

XxSPIDEYxX2766d ago

I literally bought my Smash Bros Nintendo Switch today.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle32d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
