Native 4k in Red Dead Redemption 2, Does it Matter?

Gamerheadquarters; "While resolution rarely factors into how enjoyable a game can be there, there is a sense of realism that's presented through a higher resolution."

To the people who want to feel good about their Xboxone X purchase yeah I'd say it does, to the rest of us as in 99% of all xbox/ps4 onwers I'd say no, it doesn't matter to the slightest since we end up playing the exact same game.

BenRC012755d ago

You just don't get it. 4k, it's stunning.

Cmv382755d ago

So is whatever resolution I'm getting on my pro and 1080p television.

Switch4One2755d ago

I'm going to guess it's 1080p.

JackBNimble2755d ago

I am sure 4k is stunning, but even on the ogps4 the game looks great and runs smooth.
I have absolutely no complaints about resolution on the ogps4 or the frame rate.

WilliamSheridan2755d ago

If graphics didn't matter, we'd still be playing NES

Brave_Losers_Unite2755d ago

4K >>>>> 1080P. For those who disagree, I can tell you have never tried 4k. Hell, I only game on my PC at 2k and it is above and beyond better than 1080P. 1080P and 60fps is getting old. Hell none of the consoles can even do 60

Duke192755d ago (Edited 2755d ago )

Yeah as a recent convert to 4k - there is absolutely a difference in native 4k vs anything less than that (on my PS4 Pro). Anyone arguing there is no visual differences is just doing damage control for their system of choice.

and to qualify - im getting it on PS4 Pro (since I dont have an X), although im sure it would look even more amazing on Xbox judging from the horrendously compressed youtube comparisons I have seen (which even there show a huge disparity)

Babadook72754d ago

I’d say 4K makes a difference. Whether it’s native or 2160p CBR.

DarXyde2754d ago

WilliamSheridan,

"If graphics didn't matter, we'd still be playing NES"

Is that the only benefit of hardware evolution over NES? No. It's not.

BrettAwesome2754d ago

@BRAVE_LOSERS
1080p IS 2k 😉

UltraNova2754d ago

Some people will have you believe that everybody has all 4 systems side by side with 4 copies of the same game and get to see with their own eyes, in real-time which version is the best looking and which is the "worse"...yeah.. newsflash, no one is like that.

The setup you have will produce the visuals you get to see and get used to. RDR2 looks great on all consoles and it doesn't matter for the individual, it will only matter if for example an OG xbone gamer played some of the game and then decides to switch(no pun intended) to a Pro or X. Think about the odds there for a moment.

The whole point here is that the game is optimized and looks great on the systen you onw right now and it shouldn't matter to you if it can look even better on another system simply because you would have bought one already if it did.

andibandit2754d ago

@UltraNova

"and it doesn't matter for the individual"

thank you for speaking on my behalf, but you are wrong.

UltraNova2754d ago

@andibandit

I wasn't speaking on your behalf though and we can agree to disagree there.

ChrisW2754d ago

It all comes down to one question:

Do you have a 4K TV?

mikeslemonade2754d ago

All you commoners are still playing at 30 frames. I will get the PC version and play on my 2080ti, max settings at 4K at 60 frames.

UnHoly_One2754d ago

I'd gladly give up 4k to have true HDR instead of the halfassed fake HDR they used.

WilliamSheridan2755d ago

You also forget, we get the resolution increase AND more stable framerate. That's 2 reasons. Look, I own a pro and an X... X gives the better experience with multi plats... And pro has great exclusives. Let's just after on the strengths of each system and move on

MoonConquistador2755d ago

I've not upgraded my TV to a 4K model yet but upgraded to a Pro at the weekend as it came with a copy of RDR2.

That was mainly for the frame rate issues which have been mentioned in reviews and I was gonna upgrade eventually. Oh, and I have more money than sense lol

Lionsguard2754d ago

I was mulling over buying a Xbox One X because I wanted the highest res and FPS as possible but after looking at their list of games and upcoming releases, it's pretty pathetic. I have no other reason to keep the X after RDR2. I thought by now they'd have a decent lineup to justify the purchase but I can't. The X has nothing I'm interested in and nothing new on the horizon either. I already bought the Xbox One Day One Edition and I played a grand total of 1 game on it, Dead Rising 3. It's now sitting next to me having played literally nothing else in it's entire life. Only if Microsoft had a decent lineup other than Forza (I'm not a racing guy) and Sea of Thieves (Meh).

xRacer74x2754d ago

Exactly. This man gets it.

WilliamSheridan2754d ago

"Let's agree* on the strengths... "

And to the gentleman who said he was going to but an X for increased resolution and framerate, but couldn't see a reason to keep it down the road. That makes no sense. Every game that comes out will have the better resolution and framerate. So if RDR2 is worth buying the X, every single other game that gets released looking even better is reason enough to keep it.

It's like upgrading your video card. You might play the same games, but they will look and run better.

I love both systems for what they are. Let's just enjoy being gamers.... Hugs?

BOOM, I rarely give agrees/disagrees but kudos to you for stating the obvious

TheOtherMoon2755d ago

Yes...that's what its all about - Xbox X users feeling good about their purchase. After having the system for this long...finally I can stop feeling so foolish about my purchase. *sighs* ...redemption ... Red Dead Redemption.

B1uBurneR2755d ago

That makes no sense. The system is not even a year old, but since day one it had breathtaking visuals. We are just happy... well me.. That according to the masses RDR2 is one of the best looking game of this generation taking full advantage of the 4K pixel and HDR in my tv, the beast once again is not half stepping. I predicted a 3rd party game was gonna sh!!!t on sony exclusives visually. For those that want to peak into the future aka next gen. The X is your window as a console.

DarkVoyager2755d ago

“Yes...that's what its all about - Xbox X users feeling good about their purchase.”

Or you could just accept that the Xbox One X version loooks and plays best as DF stated and leave it at that.

ChasingTheSun2755d ago

Thats the exact reason they are bragging, im playing the same game as them and many more down the road that will never be on xbox.

TheOtherMoon2755d ago

@B1uBurneR
@DarkVoyager

Guys, please reread what I wrote - I own an Xbox X and I'm playing RDR2 on my Xbox X. I was commenting on how ridiculous the OP sounds. I appreciate your support for the Xbox X, I love it too and the games is very pretty.

What people dont get is that its more then just 4K. Its also image quality, shadows, lighting, textures and more.

DarkVoyager2755d ago (Edited 2755d ago )

“Native 4k in Red Dead Redemption 2, Does it Matter?”

No. I’d rather play at a lower resolution.

What a dumb question.

ChasingTheSun2755d ago

Let them enjoy this moment because the xboxone brand has nothing to offer, they acting like its a killer app and that it looks totally different and runs at 60fps on the X, i played it on the x and own it on base ps4 and the differences are minimal at best besides the resolution difference.

Why dont digital foundry or candyland compare the base ps4 vs base xboxone like they have done for every game this gen? Lets see which base console that 95% of all us own comes out on top. I bet microsoft paid these sites not to compare the base console because phil spencer and major nelson are liars and shady.

2755d ago
Neonridr2754d ago

the salt flowing out of you is ridiculous.

Obscure_Observer2755d ago

@UltraNova

"to the rest of us as in 99% of all xbox/ps4 onwers I'd say no, it doesn't matter to the slightest since we end up playing the exact same game"

Xbox One X´s RDR2 version not only has the double pixels count compared to PS4 Pro, but also 30fps LOCKED! So how exactly "we" end up playing the exact same game?

rainslacker2754d ago

Content is the same across the two. Game play is the same across the two. Could even say its the same across all 4 consoles.

That may be why people consider it playing the same game, because not everyone considers graphics or marginal differences in frame rates as something to differentiate a game from the same game on another system.

At least that was my understanding of how it worked for those years in this gen before the X1X was released. It gets hard to keep up with what people care about though, so maybe I'm going on outdated fan boy rhethoric.

Obscure_Observer2754d ago

@rainslacker

"It gets hard to keep up with what people care about though, so maybe I'm going on outdated fan boy rhethoric."

Pherhaps; because imo there´s nothing "marginal" in comparing a game which runs at native 4K with locked 30fps vs a game which has a blurry image and frames dropping below 23fps.

rainslacker2753d ago

That's all good and fine, but maybe extend that marginal comment to mean that people don't care about significant or marginal differences in frame rates as something to differentiate game from the same game on another system.

Beyond the graphics and differences in frame rates, which really aren't as exceptional as you make them out to be since it's not consistently dropping below 30fps on PS4P, the actual content, and game play is exactly the same, and PS4P still looks phenomenal.

Obscure_Observer2753d ago

@rainslacker

"Beyond the graphics and differences in frame rates, which really aren't as exceptional as you make them out to be since it's not consistently dropping below 30fps on PS4P"

Fair enough. But i wasn´t talking about the PS4 Pro in that particular comment. I was talking about the base systems which i think is not good enough to handle modern/new big AAA games. And yes, there´s a gulf between the same game, at the same price, running on base vs iterative systems.

it matters to whomever can run it at that resolution and has the TV/monitor to support it.
clickbait article to pit fanboys against each other again
Xbox One X owners paid more for their hardware than PS4Pro owners, surely we expect it to run better. paying more to get less would'nt make any sense. Same when the PC version comes out (if ever)

Sieden2755d ago

I had a PS4 version pre-ordered for my Pro until I seen the Digital Foundry breakdown, I now own an Xbox One X.

starchild2755d ago

Just like someone watching a movie on DVD and a 30" TV is watching the same exact movie as someone watching it on Blu-ray and 65" TV. It just isn't as visually engaging and immersive.

rainslacker2754d ago

That's probably the closest analogy I've seen, although I think the differences in this case aren't quite as stark.

But realistically, all these people know what's being said, they just want to pretend it doesn't make sense so they can try and make an argument on their own.

2754d ago
nucky642754d ago

agree, ultra. and here's the real proof to support your arguement - if the people disagreeing with you were right, these 4k consoles would be selling so fast, sony and MS couldn't make the pro or X fast enough - and this is NOT the case. they aren't selling as fast as the 1080p versions and it's because there just isn't that big of an upgrade. i love new tech; but, i'm not buying a mid-gen marginal upgrade - it's just not worth it.
btw - i'm LOVING rdr2 on my launch ps4.

Dizzy115232754d ago

I feel pretty darn good. And Glad I can play it in glorious 4K.

Neonridr2754d ago

but yet it mattered when it was 1080p vs 900p or 900p vs 720p. You guys acted like it was a totally different game and felt bad for the poor XB1 gamers. Now suddenly it doesn't matter as it's the same game which ironically is exactly what the Xbox gamers were saying before. It's like watching a fight between people with no long term memories.

UltraNova2754d ago (Edited 2754d ago )

Yep.

AAWELLS092754d ago

Resolution was certainly a big deal at the start of this generation when it was in favor of PS console. And dont say it wasnt as there was 100's of articles talking about how resolution makes you a better gamer and how the Xbox One is inferior due to the res differences. And mark my words once PS5 comes out it will def matter again especially if it beats the next Xbox to market then all this crap starts all over again. It matters for sure and no amount of disagrees will change that.

UltraNova2754d ago

Nope. It mattered when an inferior spec wise console cost 100 dollars more than the superior one. Get your facts straight.

ThatOneRiggaNob2754d ago

but that wasn't the case when it was 720p vs 1080p now was it?

+ Show (15) more repliesLast reply 2753d ago
gamer78042755d ago

first you have to define "matter". does it matter in the end enjoyment of the story? No. But it does give players more feast for the eyes, its like watching a standard blu ray vs watching an UHD blu ray except they both cost the same price as long as you have a device to play it on. So if you have the choice, its a no brainer to get the xbox one x version.

warriorcase2754d ago

This. The amount of detail in clothing, enviroments and weapons in 4k is incredibly detailed and crisp. Don't know how rockstar pulled it off but im glad they got some wizards to work this magic.

Switch4One2755d ago

It's not a game changer or deal breaker either way. It's definitely a nice bonus to have on a great game but nobody should be upset about not having it.

josh-eh2755d ago

I'm pretty upset about it. I'd be okay with not having native 4k if the checkerboard 4k on PS4 Pro was implemented well. God of War and Spiderman weren't native 4K but were MUCH sharper than Red Dead 2. Look at the stars at night on a PS4 pro.. it's not sharp and the stars are blurry.

Also, HDR is broken in the game, colors look washed out.

I am SOOOO dissapointed right now, this was suppose to be the biggest game of the generation and I feel like I'm playing it in 720p. PLEASE PATCH THIS ROCKSTAR!

Cmv382755d ago

Wow. Its really not that deep.

mkis0072755d ago

To be fair the stars are like the on X too...

2pacalypsenow2755d ago

Sounds like you have a shitty tv tbh.

Switch4One2755d ago

Well I don't know about all of that, I don't have a Pro so I can't say anything contrary to what you are saying.

2754d ago
DaGR8JIBRALTAR2754d ago

Yeah they need to fix the hdr problem but calm down bro. If you have a decent 4k tv and the pro, you should be good. I was having issues with the sharpness until I turned hdr off...so keep that off until we receive a patch.

xXxSeTTriPxXx2754d ago

I agree and im very disappointed by the visuals on the pro.Everything is so blurry, so i play with my pro forced to 1080p.

This needs to be patched.I even ponder buying a x because of the visual fidelity on hand

Spartacus102754d ago (Edited 2754d ago )

You probably would be upset if you dropped £350 on a mid-gen upgrade that was promoted using massive 4k logos everywhere, and you still cant have it.

Personally it doesn't matter that much to me so I'm happy waiting until next gen when its the norm, and good 4k HDR gaming monitors are more affordable.

mad-dog2755d ago

Of course that matters. Game looks phenomenal on the X. Too bad Rockstar kinda fucked up with the Pro version. Because that's the version i'm playing. Lot's of people have issues with how it looks on their pro. In my case i think it looks fine. Just a bit soft.

2755d ago
mad-dog2754d ago

It's off and that doesn't cause it.

Bruh2755d ago

Its not a good implementation of checkerboard rendering, at 1920x2160 it justs not gonna look sharp on a 4K screen

WickedLester2755d ago

There will be a patch. Just wait and see.

OpenGL2755d ago

They disable the sharpening option in the 4K mode (or if you have supersampling enabled in your system menu and use a 1080p TV). PS4 Pro owners with 1080p TVs should disable super-sampling for now as the game actually looks better that way, and it eliminates the minor frame dips that occur in the 4K mode.

KickSpinFilter2755d ago

Well you better not play it on the org XB1 looks like mud puddles compared to the other 3.

Bruh2755d ago

I could only imagine, the Pro version looks like soup, guessing the OG Xbox one version looks like flash floods

Artemidorus2754d ago

It looks totally fine on OG Xbox One.

2pacalypsenow2755d ago

What issues?

I'm playing on a C7 and it looks great.

mad-dog2754d ago (Edited 2754d ago )

Your screen doesn't matter. And it looks fine. Just a bit soft compared to the X version. Rockstar is looking in to it, anyway. People think it could have something to do with the method of checkerboard rendering and the weird resolution they chose for the Pro. We'll see. Don't let it bother you too much. The game is amazing .

TKCMuzzer2754d ago

Looks great on my PS4 Pro. If I didn't know already and someone lied to me and said it was native 4K, I would have believed them.

Hungryalpaca2755d ago

It doesn’t look native 4k. It’s very blurry compared to a native 4k game.

CarlDechance2755d ago (Edited 2755d ago )

I’ve noticed nothing blurry in the game. But I’m also not stopping the game constantly and analyzing it close up. I’m just playing the game and it looks great.

rainslacker2754d ago (Edited 2754d ago )

That's odd, since all the marketing before release was done from PS4P grabs, and no one said it was blurry then.

Did people need DF to point out the blurriness to them before they recognized it? That's quite strange considering people go to great lengths to point out that the PS4P sucks and is blurry, textures are changed in the slightest, any almost insignificant lighting change is now a major problem, and that puddles go missing.

But not a single person noted the game being so blurry before?

Was this game downgraded for PS4P before release?

I don't think the PS4P version is as sharp as the X1X version, but the claims that it's significantly better on the X1X are greatly exaggerated. I also think the flaws that are there on the PS4P are greatly overstated as to their impact on the overall picture quality, because the game still looks phenomenal on the PS4P.

JokerBoy4222754d ago

Digital Foundry confirmed its native 4K on Xbox One X only. OG Xbox One users get 840p and a very blurry experience. Thats what youre seeing. That or youre not playing on a 4K TV with your X. Either that OR, youre TV settings are all fucked.

crazyCoconuts2755d ago

Size of screen, distance from screen, eyesight, expectations, and personal attentiveness all goes into whether someone would notice the difference. That should be obvious to the jokers that are challenging your opinion.

xXxSeTTriPxXx2754d ago

I haven't watched not one single trailer or teaser b4 i purchased this game.

The game looked like ass from the moment i saw it.

It is what it is

mad-dog2754d ago

Yeah... well, i guess we don't all have the same eyesight.

xXxSeTTriPxXx2754d ago

Thats the fanboy talking, because the game looks like shit on ps4 pro in 4k hdr.

CarlDechance2754d ago (Edited 2754d ago )

No, not fanboy talking. I just needed to play more. Yes, I admit that I am seeing the blur that I hadn't noticed before after I went back and played some other games and then returned to RDR2. It is not a game changer by any means, but yes it is there. So I stand corrected.

Team_Litt2752d ago (Edited 2752d ago )

I don't know man. It kinda looks like you were happy to deny any problems whatsoever here and you were prepared to call it the most 4K looking game ever.

Then you saw that other article saying Rockstar have acknowledged the problem and now it's "oh yeah I just needed to play it a bit more, it's definitely blurry.

I'm not saying that's the case but it certainly looks that way from where I'm sitting.

Blurred Loyalty to Playstation. Tihihi! I'm coining that! Nobody steal it!

CarlDechance2751d ago (Edited 2751d ago )

I wrote the acknowledgment of the issue before the rockstar article was even posted on n4g. I was not aware of what Rockstar said about it until it was posted on n4g.

jznrpg188d ago

3 billion or so in revenue not including online stuff I’m sure they don’t

SethNW188d ago

I am pretty sure they don't. It was profitable and made them a lot of money. Not GTA5 money but far from failure. Maybe it is lower priority franchise, due to being smaller, but that is about the lowest they would put it as. Only thing they do consider failure is RDR2 Online, unlike GTA5 Online, that RDR2 Online flopped. Hence why it got less support. And when it come to profits, sales for both combined don't come close to GTA Online microtansactions. Hence why everything very quickly got canceled and GTA Online was top priority, so no GTA6 for a long time, no DLC for GTA5, despite there being 5 DLCs planned, at least I think it was 5, give or take one. But as I see it, they needed to rejuvenate interest and all, hence why GTA6 eventually is getting made. But what they are really looking forward to is refresh of Online.

Only in terms of the online aspect of the game. They didn't support it as much as they did GTA V Online. I remember people being pissed about that.

The world they built is pretty amazing. Unfortunately, the game was mostly boring to me. I definitely had fun in some parts, but it didn't do it for me as a whole like the first one did. I loved RDR so much.

The budgets and time it takes to make games these days is out of control. Such a big risk. If a game isn't a huge hit, it is often it for a studio. Scary. I really miss the PS2 and PS3 days where studeios could make 4 games in a generation and take risks in making something new. And so many were using their own engines. Those were the days.

neutralgamer1992192d ago

Agreed. I love RDR but couldn't get into RDR2. The animations take forever and game slows you down on purpose. It won't let you have fun because R* want us to play the game they want to. I know millions love RDR2 and I even bought and own it. But just wasn't for me.

It's like comparing GTA4 to saints row 2. One game was about fun while the other was about realism and that's coming from someone who beat GTA4 many times. I much rather a game be fun to play than chase realism

YodaCracker192d ago

GTA IV’s realism is what made it so much more fun for me. I loved experimenting with the physics.

Storm23191d ago

I bought RDR2 also. Put 100+ hours into it and beat it our of respect for Rockstar and all the people saying it was the greatest game ever. RDR blew my mind but might also have been the best time in gaming for me personally. l loved that PS3 gen so much.

I am excited to see what GTA6 is like.
