Interesting topic. I've never been big on collector's editions for the same reasons the article lists (poor quality, goes down in value, etc.), but I will say I always spring for SteelBooks. They (usually) look good and they seem to hold their value more.

Collectors editions are usually good for people who only want to collect. Very rarely do they go up in value. Even if they do, shipping them which is where you sell most games nowadays usually renders a sale at a loss, or the price too high that no one wants to buy it.

Some do increase in value quite a bit though....sometimes overnight. The last of us collectors edition shot up to over $1000 after the release, but it was a great ce, and the game was instantly well received.

That being said, most of the assassin's creed games have ce that go down really quick, but they have excellent quality statues in them. I have a nice collection of the statues from last gen, although I backed off buying then this gen

I normally buy CE for games I really love like Persona, I would buy a CEs for some Square-Enix games like World of Final Fantasy (I really like the pop up book), but they're impossible to get because of how stingy Square-Enix is with production and my country rarely gets a great deal of their stock. I'm looked to pre-order the Persona Dancing CE next month, that nets me all 3 games in one easy package (everything else about it is pretty standard). The only problem I have with CEs is that the majority of them are pretty samey and low effort, although that's fine because sometimes they just bundle stuff that just becomes junk (that Fuka figure in the Disgaea 4 CE).

If the games are factory sealed, depending on how much u paid for, it can go up in value.

I've flipped numerous games this way and made a lot of money.

I've recently sold my xbox 360 for $250 on Ebay, I paid $65 from gamestop about 3-4 years ago.

I still have 3 factory sealed PS3s at home. I'll sell it one day. I also picked up Bayonetta 2 from toys r us for $10. I know I can triple my investment.

I have a bunch of factory sealed stuff at home. I make a good profit 99% of the time. This is what funds my hobby.

I'm not a big collector anymore of the game editions themselves (I used to more during PS3/360era), but I collect art books. The Art of Journey had a limited run of only 5,000 printed copies. I was bummed that I missed out. They then announced that they would be running another limited run in a 2nd edition. I camped the preorder and landed one of the first 750 copies which came signed. Now days, the regular edition is worth between $500-1500 depending on the availability of the market. I'm not sure how much the even more limited signed copies are running for, but I refuse to sell it... it's one of my prized posessions as both an avid gamer and artist!

*edit-of course mine's not sealed, but in "Like New" condition. I wasn't buying it with the intention of reselling.

It will be useless, unless that the next gen consoles have BC as a standard from the get go.
It's make purchasing a game worthwhile especially digitally.

rainslacker2777d ago

No game I have in my collection is useless. If one collects, then digital is a non issue, and if next gen doesn't support this gen, I don't see what going digital will really help, unless they do away with the physical media format

Unfortunately as the years go on less and less people care about collecting anything. Being a collector meant something when I was growing up. I'm still a collector of many things. Always will be. When I'm dead people can toss it all or something lol

Tetsujin2777d ago

The countless hours spent for good experiences, good memories, and the start of me going to Evo/Combobreaker? No. No amount of money will equal what I learned from gaming that school couldn't even teach me. The experiences are more than whatever my current collection is worth.

bigmalky2777d ago (Edited 2777d ago )

Anything mass manufactured is bound to be pointless as a collector.

I also honestly can't see many people paying a few hundred for an Assassin's Creed statue, as an example, in thirty years time.

If you're a collector for yourself, no problem. If it's an investment, I just don't see it.

rainslacker2777d ago

You'd be surprised. As things become harder to get, they tend to go up on price, and eventually almost all collectibles end up being thrown away by the owner, or in the hands of people actually keeping them.

When it comes to consoles themselves, the better more niche systems tend to go up quite a bit. The turbo duo cost around 700 nowadays, and the us games can be pretty pricey ad well...although there are usually lots of Japanese games that can be had pretty cheap

bigmalky2776d ago (Edited 2776d ago )

Rare consoles, maybe, but all the stuff that comes with collector editions of games, I'm not so sure.

rainslacker2776d ago

CE's can be, but they're kind of rare that they go up in value. One is more likely to save money by just not buying them day one, waiting for them to plummet in price, then if need be, buy the one that goes up a lot in price on the occasion it happens. I tried this for a while, and it works for the most part.

There are some that I really just do want though, and I don't mind buying those day one. but for me, it's about collecting, not so much about investing for profit.
