Why has the Switch been selling so well?

On 3rd March 2017, Nintendo launched its new console, the Nintendo Switch. The Switch itself has been more than we expected, selling millions within its first year; and already surpassing the Wii U but why?

i have a switch. Good console. But i would like more exclusives thats not mario

carmelo432868d ago

yeah good luck with that lol

Shiken2868d ago

Zelda, Xenoblade, Octopath Traveler, Donkey Kong, Bayonetta franchise after 1, Metroid Prime Pokemon, Fire Emblem, Kirby, etc

I mean really dude? You have got to try harder than that, it is sad lmao.

DivineAssault 2868d ago

Some people dismiss the exclusives then wonder why theres nothing to play on it.

princejb1342868d ago

Hate Kirby, never been into fire emblem, new Pokémon looks ehh, metroid prime has no release date, bayoneta I might try, donkey kong I'm waiting for price drop, octopath has ugly graphics, xenoblade I'm picking up, Zelda unsure.
The real reason I bought the switch was for super smash brothers ultimate

Skankinruby2868d ago

Most of the franchises you listed date back to the late 80s/early 90s, not exactly a point to gloat on. Nintendos underpowered hardware releases games xbox and playstation have been playing for years and people act like it's a milestone. Nintendo is the utter epitome of redundancy and gimmicks.

SurgicalMenace2868d ago

Zelda, Donkey Kong, Bayonetta, Smash, Mario Kart, and Hyrule Warriors are rereleases. Now when you wrote your list you included games that CANNOT be played now. He made a valid point, comparatively, we would like to see fresh games not offered anywhere else that do not follow the same formula of including Mario in so many games.

Now Octapath, Xenoblade, and Metroid(later) are nice. Be honest, to a gamer that has more than one option, how many NEW experiences does the Switch offer?

AWBrawler2868d ago

The exclusives on Switch are pretty good unless you’re picky as heck and only water gritty ultra real shooters.
I am having a blast with games like Sushi Striker, Arms, Splatoon 2, Fire Emblem Heroes, Mario Odyssey, Octopath Traveler, Xenoblade 2, Kirby, and some pretty darn good indies and multiplats like Rocket league, Dragonball Xenoverse 2, implosion, Fortnite, wizard of legend, phantom breakers, nine parchments, Doom, Skyrim (1st time playing it) and many others. Most people who are hating on the Switch just already had it in their minds they would hate the system before even giving it a chance.

SurgicalMenace2868d ago

It is not that people hate the Switch, what they hate is the fact that everything it does has already been done. Because Nintendo, is the only real reason that people even care, it's like when a disabled kids reads a Dr. Suess book. I would be more excited if I didn't already play most of its library on my Vita, PS4, XB1, 3DS, Wii U, and Steam 2 years ago. They treat EVERY release on the Switch as though it's some grand affair, and we hate that people act like they can't see it then treat it like those games have NEVER been available before. JS

Xenoblade is not everyone's favorite, too much anime (bad ones). And let's be honest for a minute, ... you list games that have been regurgitated for decades.

Then you add the Wii u ports coming this year and a smartphone game as well .. ; while you two are technically correct, I have to take sides with prince1234 here ...

Nintendo has only Mario and Zelda/metroid that have a worldwide appeal. Smash, Kirby, donkey ... just the same N64 games with fancier graphics.

Other than Mario Zelda or Metroid, Nintendo got nothing that interests me. And I feel that this narrative/prerogative is shared among many ... good secondary console, but it will never be the main machine.

Shiken2868d ago

Not a single one of those games are for smartphones lmao. Keep reaching...still pretty far but this downplay os obviously important to you!

FYI, Xenoblade 2 is highly successful and sold more than any other entry in the series. The more you know. --------☆

Well the funny thing is, Nintendo is not only about Mario anymore. Heck, Mario isn’t even the best selling Switch game in Japan. That title now belong to Splatoon.

As for game, they have many other successful franchises beside Mario such as Pokémon, Smash, Zelda, and even Xenoblade. Not to mention new games like Octopath Traveller. I think there is something for everyone when it comes to their games.

Just wait for a Pokemon and watch it fly off the shelves.

3DS had 10 Pokemon games and still it won't reach PSP numbers - Sony's first handheld.

mamotte2868d ago

Shouldn't you be comparing the PSP with the DS? I mean, PSP wont ever reach DS numbers: 154.02 million, vs 82 million of PSP sold. Also, 3DS: 72.53 million. PS Vita: 10–15 million .(estimate)

Sirk7x2868d ago (Edited 2868d ago )

A Nintendo handheld has never been outsold by another during that particular generation lol. That's Video Game History 101. Also, it's not even close, the PSP released 6 years before the 3DS...six years from now 3DS sales will have surpassed the PSP considering Nintendo is still kinda supporting it.

King_Noctis2868d ago

Sony’s first handheld couldn’t even reach DS’s number.

Different time, different taste man.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle25d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
