Why next-gen consoles shouldn't focus on 'true 4K'

In the wake of E3, Sony sent over high quality 4K versions of their trailers, allowing us to get a closer, more granular look at how PlayStation 4 Pro is set deliver the next wave of first-party exclusives for owners of ultra HD displays. Technologies like checkerboarding and temporal injection persist and in all cases, the results are impressive. And that's a good thing, as these techniques - or evolved versions of them - are likely to be a component of games designed for the next generation of consoles. By extension, what that also means is that marketing a new PlayStation or Xbox as a 'true 4K' console, or pushing developers to maximise pixel-counts first and foremost, may not be the best idea.

Someone should explain it to gamers in detail for them to understand,
the only explanation I can come up with is, if game devs forced 1080p during the ps3 xbox 360 era, all we would get are ps2 graphics quality games @ 1080p.

next gen will just be ps4,xbox one quality graphics @ 4k.

PurpHerbison2874d ago

All I ever wanted last gen was 1080p 60fps, even if it was PS2 graphics. Hate that muggy feeling that some console games have cause they try to juice it for graphics instead of performance.

Eonjay2874d ago

I think next gen is going to be 60FPS no matter what and resolution will be 2K (1440) to 4K. Games like spiderman and tlou2 are 2K (natively before upscaling tech) now: just at 30 which is why the look so good. Next gen when a game is 2K it WILL be 60FPS+

Also I absolutely expect PSVR2 will be 120FPS natively 100% of the time with graphics comparable to regular PS4 game graphics.

starchild2874d ago

I think if you're expecting most games to run at 60fps on next gen consoles you'll be sorely disappointed. I'll bet anything that the majority of games on consoles will continue to target 30fps.

Going from 30fps to 60fps alone takes twice as much hardware performance. The problem is, most gamers aren't going to be satisfied with current levels of graphical quality on next gen consoles, even if those games offer 60fps. There's the expectation of a big leap in visual quality that we are used to getting with each new generation. Developers know this. And they also know that impressive visuals help sell games better than improved framerates will.

@Eonjay

2k is not 1440p... This is somehow a very common mistake.

2k/4k/8k is a reference to the approximate number of horizontal pixels, 4k is 3840 pixels, 2k is half that 1920, and yes, that is the width of a 1080p resolution.

On-topic tho: I hope Sony will continue to work on things like checkerboard rendering and that it will be easy for devs to use in their existing engines. That way they can both do a high resolution and up the visual effects and AI. And of course 60fps would be nice as well!

Kakashi Hatake2874d ago

One X does that and Pro is within 70 percent of doing that for most games. Next gen will surely be in another ballpark. I agree about pushing resolution though. 1440p looks just as good. Devs should focus more on fidelity.

Eonjay2874d ago

They mean 4k AND 60FPS. There is sheer weight connected to pushing 4k pixels and that cost GPU time. To that you have to add effect work, post processing and the works. Doing that 60x a second is no small task if you want cutting edge graphics.

FinalFantasyFanatic2874d ago

@Eonjay,

True, even the 1080Ti struggles to maintain 4k 60fps, especially in games with higher graphical fidelity.

rainslacker2874d ago (Edited 2874d ago )

Devs will likely continue to focus on fidelity, because the market tends to respond better to good looking games, than games that have high resolutions. It's been this way since the start of consoles. Not so much on the resolution side, because that didn't start until we began to move away from SD resolutions, but certainly things like colors and image quality.

4K right now is a good marketing tool, but in the long haul, it's not going to be as imperative as some act like it is now.

Muzikguy2874d ago

Eonjay

Imagine everything you just said done on a server instead of a dedicated console. That actually makes cloud based gaming seem even more far fetched.

I kind of disagree.
Sony has stepped up their game engines and particles effects on top of charcuterie design and atmosphere. It is just popping out when what they push both seem par on course when you are driving through a market in a jeep at fast speed trying to stay alive. You are not stoping to notice the physics, the color cast through materials and such.
God of war was great for it because each area is meant to be taken in by the player.
Like in uncharted when you cross the rock cliff then slide down etc.
they are a leap for sure.
But their 4k upscailing technique with the current engines is fantastic. I would rather see that at a minimum of 60fps then 4k shine on weaker engines. Sony is also keeping the memory at a minimum vs 100+gigs of textures.

Timesplitter142874d ago (Edited 2874d ago )

True, but if the PS5 focused on PS4-quality graphics at 120 fps / 1080p, it would be the absolute best use of next-gen power possible

starchild2874d ago

I personally want to see a large visual leap. The PC is always an option for those of us that want more fluid framerates.

jukins2874d ago

What an ignorant statement. Were already doing 4k (more so on xb1x) 6 or 7 years later you ppl still think well basically be playing ps4pro and xb1x games 9n terms of quality? Lol crazy and just no common sense

FinalFantasyFanatic2874d ago

You can explain it in all the detail you want, most people just don't want to hear it for some reason, there's plenty of people on N4G with more technical backgrounds that have tried, but then the fanbois chime in.

zsquaresoff2875d ago

The main focus for next gen console should be to have absolutely no in-game loading, no texture pop-ins and no frame rate drops.

Goldby2875d ago

You actually want in game loading, that way it's masked by gameplay and some sort of hallway loading screen. No in game loading would produce an actual loading screen

joab7772875d ago (Edited 2875d ago )

But it will never happen b/c they go hand on hand with electronics and sales. I have been wanting a focus on dynamic gameplay but all we ever get r better looking games. It’s great that we have many types of games now.

Though next gen will have 4K/60fps as a standard. But even 60 FPS is far from optimal.

FinalFantasyFanatic2874d ago

@joab777,

60fps is pretty comfy on the eyes for most people, it's when you dip below that figure, especially on games that demand fast reactions or inputs like fighting games. Personally texture pop-ins is pretty annoying for me, Horizon Zero Dawn on a vanilla is PS4 is a good example, it looks good but you don't have to walk very far to see constant texture pop-ins. Less annoying when your heavily focused during combat scenes though.

Well If they do focus on 4K natively, I believe that they should stick to that standard going forward in future generations for a very long time. Though I won’t be surprised to see if they’re pushing 8K as a feature in game commercials sometime in the future. I’d really like for these developers to be able to stick to a nice resolution as a standard, and direct resources towards better stories, gameplay, and graphical effects.

FinalFantasyFanatic2874d ago

8k is so far away though, 4k still isn't what I would call standard since it's demanding and the costings involved are only starting to trickle down into the realm of affordable now. Plus you'd need a fuck huge screen to make the detail of 8k worth it, people argue that 4k isn't worth it but it looks great watching a 4k movie on a huge 4k screen.

Japanese developers are a piece of crap at optimizing games for consoles, this game should be played at 60fps on PS4 pro and Xbox One X with easy....instead runs at 30fps with frame pacing issues.Crap development! And really you need a 2080TI to play at 4K@60fps on a game that looks average in the graphics department...what crap is this!

Arcade mode is a huge surprise for me. I have played every gears game and have never got into vs multiplayer because i just got owned every time but i've been playing arcade mode all weekend and had loads of fun even getting mvp a few times lol.
One thing i will say though is that even though this is a tech test and the matchmaking has improved over the last few days if it runs like that at launch the criticism will kill it.
