If it's an "actual" console, not any "Steam like" or Chrome computer like console it will need a strong 1st party support. That's key to surviving. Even Microsoft, one of the richest companies is struggling with that.

This article nor Google rumors have made a compelling case of "Why" as in why would anyone buy the console? Even if streaming becomes the way of the world why would anyone buy Alphabet Soup over Sony, Nintendo, or Xbox when all of them would be able to do the same thing, or at the very least within a small time frame that would prevent people from jumping ship to a new "main" console.

Google needs something the others dont have and its not just IPs. It needs the next big gaming "thing" and it needs to be the only place to get it. I'm not holding my breathe that Google can deliver that.

If it relies on streaming that's going to be a huge mistake. History has also shown the industry can only sustain 3 consoles and PC anything more and someone is going to lose. Usually it's the one who made one too many mistakes.

A headline like that just shows how little has been actually considered by the author. Licensing deals, publishing deals, hardware manufacturing. This isn't taking anyone by surprise. There is no room in the market for a fourth console. Especially one that is likely to just push Google's online services. Besides, you know what really drives up the cost of development? When a dev has to develop a single game for FOUR consoles. I'm not interested in $70 games thank you very much.

If it included Android TV, API so developers can make apps tailored for it, remote control, controller, and of course adequate hardware specs, I maybe interested. But competing with the AAA games, not yet, and also Google does clearly suffer from ADHD which puts success in doubt.

It's likely an Apple TV competitor focused on gaming. The PS4, Switch, Xbox, aren't the only things in the gaming industry. You have PC, Phones, TVs that play games, facebook, java, Apple TV, Tablets, watches, even some cable channels are games, Arcade, cars with games built in them, and more. First of all Google would need to create some big exclusive games of their own to separate them from the competition. Hardware power or streaming won't make it.

What dribble do these gaming journalist write. 1st of all it takes time to get your 1st party studios, then you have to gain trust from the 2nd and 3rd party studios before you even think about catching your rivals out.
who in there right mind would ditch there beloved console companies ie Sony or MS for Google with little to no 1st party games, how would they even get the best directors, artists, animation, programmers to join there dev teams when they work for guerilla games, naughty dog, quantum dreams, turn 10 etc etc.

Im laughing everyone on here keeps saying "MS has more servers and they bought there way into the market" news flash every hardware maker buys their way into the market and Google has billions of dollars to spend and use, they have a standing 40 billion a year for project X stuff they could easily enter the hardware market just like the did phones, browsers, laptops, email and other areas.

The system cant be all streaming it will fail if it is. I have a 1tb data cap I dont buy digital games or stream video as much as I used to because of that cap and overages. Second I dont want another god damn month service to pay for there are too many now as it is, with hulu, prime, netflix, spotify and PS+ to name a few Im getting tired of getting nickled and dimed just to enjoy content for a few hours.

I don't want to have to rely on streaming for games. Give it to me in digital format, or a physical copy. I want to be able to purchase it and own it whether it's digital or physical. I'm old school so I like having something physical I can see and hold in my hand. I appreciate the effort put into the artwork, the casing, and the artwork on the disc/cartridge. Horizon Zero Dawn Collector's Edition is a perfect example. The steelbook artwork both inside and out is gorgeous. Ok sorry that went on way too long ;o)

It's a tightrope, but there is a way. if they look to carve out a niche first then build up to something. streaming is a big let down, but remember google provides internet, so there's some room to play there. the single most important aspect will be games, which devs are they looking at, which publishers are they going to work with? Will they have AAA (or AA) dev teams in house?
Features are in the bag with built in chromecast. But what will they build on? Can I order pizza using it? EA access? Cost?
All of these and more I'd need answers to before I even consider buying one.

The future of gaming will be based on streaming services imagine playing a game that requires at least a 1000$ pc in a browser or on your smart tv. right now most people don't have a 100mbit fast internet with low latency and all of the current streaming services like ps now are technically awful and unusable but someday everything will change

Will it try to be an all-in-one streaming box? Who cares...I don't need another all-in-one machine, even my microwave streams netflix and hulu.

Streaming is dependent on a fast reliable internet connection between the content provider (aka Google) and the gamer, however, you also need to have some buffering such as a hard or solid state disk to reduce loading times of the actual game.

So far most of the world does not have a fast reliable internet connection which is dependent on the service provider, not the content provider.

Now if you are talking about digital downloads which will require the console to have a storage device (ie. HDD or SSD) then this is a more viable option unless the gamer has a really bad internet connection (ie. takes a considerable amount of time to download - annoying but doable) or none at all. Of course, even if the gamer has an excellent internet connection and they have data caps (remember some games can be over 50GB in size) or bandwidth throttling then there still is a problem.

Personally, I can't see game media vanishing anytime soon.

I like how you got dummies disagreeing with you cuz they have zero idea how much of the world and even parts of this country that still dont have super fast reliable intenet and how without that making a console that relies on pure streaming or even only pure digital games at 50 gigs + per game is just not a reality at this time. Putting out a console that always requires a steady and super fast intenet connection means that you have limited the people who can buy it by a big pecentage and any console maker who sees this as a smart move is doomed to fail. Ask MS what happened to their orginal Xbox plans.

It's all going to depend on Google's approach and the level of exclusive games, 3rd party and indie support from the start.

If Google's console has decent hardware, comparable to PS5 and the next XBox for a competitive price, with great games, clear continuing support for the future and the company provides comparable features to those systems then I could see Google carving themselves out a segment of the market, but they're an unproven entity with the console market.

People would need to know real information and have solid details to really make an informed decision.
Google needs to show what they have to offer and why they're needed in the console space.

Personally I'm interested to see if anything comes out of this, hopefully if they do move into the console industry they provide great new games, decent hardware at launch for the money and good online features.

Microsoft have lost me, after 2 generations of interest I see no point in buying an XBox now.
Maybe they can get me back if they return to their OG XBox days, but the way I see things now there is room for another player in the market if they focus on quality game development, Microsoft just hasn't done that since the Phil Spencer took over as boss of their Studios back in 2010.

Tell me again how the multiplatform strategy was supposed to fix everything. Look at your results and compare them to Nintendo, which keeps thriving with exclusives. Your loyal fans are gone. And let’s not forget the pile of IPs you purchased only to let them rot.

The worst thing is this is down from last years numbers/expectations which was down from the previous years numbers/expectations. You think about how long “down” has been a consistent part of the communication and you realize those subscriptions are what’s holding that boat together. The price cut of gamespass is still a price raise in a string of price raises. They are trying to use players to offset the missing revenue. Now call of duty is out of gamespass, which is literally WHY they bought the company. To draw people to the subscription. They realized they missed a boatload of money and that wasn’t sustainable. Now you pay for it like you would have if they never bought the company… so why buy the company? Mind you those billions still need to be paid back. Yeah it gives you a chance to say we make the biggest FPS… but the internal conversations must be brutal at high level on topics that really matter. Like revenue. Profitability. And ROI for the shopping spree.
