Is Destiny 2 Dead?

Destiny 2 seems to have fallen off the map, after launching to considerable sales and excitement just six months ago. It promised a bigger world to explore and more stuff to do than its predecessor did. The game launched to rapturous acclaim, from this outlet and from pretty much all the others.

So why does it seem like no one is playing anymore?

Old McGroin2960d ago

Might see how this is faring at the end of the year but I've heard nothing but bad things about Destiny 2. Pity, really liked the first one.

PATR1CKSOMMER2960d ago

Indeed, I honestly like the game.. somewhat, but I think maybe making a "Destiny: The Competition" or whatever they would call it, for eSport purposes.. because the multiplayer can be very eSport friendly and fun at the same time, but then keep their series single-player (co-op) seperate and get two different (Yet equally skilled) teams to work on both.

Destiny 2 is in a comma. needs a massive batch of content bigger than the Taken King to interest me.

UnHoly_One2960d ago

It's actually really good, but it doesn't have the longevity of the first game.

So if you are the type to just play for 100 hours or so you'll probably think it's great.

Uken122960d ago

It's not really good. It's completely watered down compared to Destiny 1. 5 strikes, the main raid is boring and repetitive, the guns finally received a boost but most guns were and still are trash. The Titan Void super is lame, Shadowshot is a shadow of it's predecessor. Many people including me paid premium price for watered down Destiny 1.
If it is revived like with a similar feel to Taken King then buy it then. But I wouldn't recommend it. I liked it at first but I was also under the impression that it would be more of a continuation of Destiny 1. It isn't, it's still a cash grab. Bungie needs to change their business model. Btw PVP is trash, laggy, annoying, everyone uses the same guns. There are few levels, barely any difference in gametypes and teamshot city. Iron Banner is even worse, The Factions are even worse. Everything is worse.

Also I played through all of it, and Osiris. Osiris DLC was absolute trash, it seemed so interesting. Launched it broken, Basically people paid $30 to have access to a paywall of content. Two strikes that are exactly the same. Mercury is a bad design. The Raid Lair is fun, better than the actual Raid.

So I would wait for what Year 2 has to offer, otherwise Destiny 1 is still more fun. Probably the same amount of people playing also.

Xenophon_York2960d ago

Have to agree. My sentiments exactly. Even with all the expansions the game seems half as concentrated as the first Destiny.

Lord_Sloth2960d ago

Everybody said nothing but bad things about D1 as well but it went pretty strong up until 2 launched. I think it's the same thing we're seeing in this article.

Michiel19892960d ago

Its because it became a good game later on with the last dlcs.
In Destiny 2 they removed half the features that they patched into D1 and made it better and they added MT's.
They skewed your exp if you were farming too fast and many other sneaky stuff which they labeled as "oh geez we didnt know that, we are sorry". But they only said that after some community members found out what scumbag stuff they did.

I was never a big Halo fan but I still repsected bungie a lot for delivering good games, but that respect is all gone now.

sprinterboy2959d ago

Same buddy, over 200hrs on the 1st destiny but the 2nd barely 20hrs

joab7772959d ago

Hmmm...Destiny 2...I’m trying to recall that one. ...just a sec...oh yeah...I remember...it’s the game I bought last September in the heels of D1, buying into the hype that there is no possible way they could screw up after spending 3 yrs fixing the first one. Along with like 10 friends and a community of millions, we waited with baited breathe for the release of an IP that would finally culminate in something close to their original vision.

Then...before the 1st dlc even released, 90% of a clan of 95 ppl had stopped playing. This was pre MHW, pre Fortnite, and I played for two weekends, the new dlc to see if everyone would come back, and when they didn’t, I said goodbye.

It’s very sad. We stuck around for 3 yrs waiting for this release. Such an amazing community...and they gave us D2. Such a waste. Honestly, the best bet is to scarp D2 and move on to D3. Take ALL the time required to get it right! Because making a fake of this scope in 18 months is impossible. And if they keep pushing to feed us dribble, D3 will be a mess too!

Seems pretty dead. I haven't heard anyone even mention the game in forever. But what did they expect? They got tons of feedback and complaints about the first game, and then made many of the same mistakes again in the sequel. Then with each event or update they found new ways to piss off the community. The people in charge over at Bungie appear to be very incompetent.

thekhurg2960d ago

Actually, they made a game in Destiny 2 that barely shared any similarities of the first game. They reduced the loot grind, added a larger/better single player story, removed all weapon variation, got rid of strike specific loot, got rid of raid tier loot being better than the rest of the available gear, etc...

THAT is what killed the game. The "feedback" that they received from a massive minority of gamers complaining about the first game was pointless because they weren't going to like any version of Destiny regardless. The first game was hyper successful because it had a loot grind, it had power levels to grind for, it had rewarding activities, it had great raid loot, it had for lack of a better term, GOALS.

Destiny 2 had none of that at launch and it failed miserably compared to the 1st game. They're attempting to turn Destiny 2 back into something similar to the first game to get the actual fans of that game back - but they're doing it so slowly that it's becoming moot.

Emme2960d ago

I would play it, but some update introduced a feature that makes connecting take 15 mins or so, so I quit playing Destiny 2.

It has one foot in the grave, fortunately for Bungie many people bought the season pass so the next "expansion" will either be Bungie's redemption or be the death of Destiny 2 as only a fool would preorder any future DLC they do after what they tried to pull with CoO.

Chuuzuu2960d ago

I agree. Season pass owner here and over 1600 hours in Destiny 1. Loved it even with its many flaws. Destiny 2 feels like they just shelved the first game and turned over development of the sequel to a bunch of preschoolers who didn't know what they were doing. I've lost my attachment to the Destiny universe and I really don't think that Bungie can bring me back.

Jdoki2960d ago

It's a real shame. The sound design, art design and the general feel of the guns is all world class. It's such a shame that the people in charge of the game direction, story, and game play systems screwed up so badly.

They dumbed down and stripped out so much of the game it just became such a boring, lifeless, insipid experience.

And that's not to mention the ridiculous loot box situation.

On the plus side Bungie are listening. The problem is it is too little too late. People expected D2 to build on the great ending to Year 3 D1. Instead Bungie will need to spend 9-12 months just to bring D2 up to the level D1 ended at.

The second expansion will be the crunch point. I can see a spike in players returning out of morbid curiosity - but if the expansion fails to impress the game will be dead. And worse than that, no one will trust Bungie for Destiny 3 or futurte projects.

Honestly Thank Goodness!! Yet another good sign of a possibility of returning to what made them great and undoing Jim Tyans trend chasing love service gamble. Still gotta wait and see just what direction they're going but this is a good sign in my book that they're not betting it all on live service anymore

S2Killinit97d ago (Edited 97d ago )

Not sure what you lot are talking about anymore. They need to cover all range of games. Im primarily a single player gamer, but even I cannot be daft enough to ignore the fact that we need all manner of games including live service games. Everyone here seems to be a market expert.

isarai_lee97d ago (Edited 97d ago )

Yes "all manner" not just exclusively live service like Jim was doing, but you also shouldn't be forcing devs to make games they not only have no experience making, but also flatout dont want to do.

S2Killinit97d ago

Assuming that anything like that is actually the case and not just a perception of n4g commenters of course.

Redemption-6497d ago

@isarai_lee

I don't understand why you people have to keep making up lies. You can say you don't like some or most of their focus being on live service games, but to say they were exclusively focusing on live service games is pure copium. At most half of their games were live service and the rest were single player games. Seriously why lie about something so obvious?

isarai_lee96d ago

@Redemption-64

You say that as if we don't have word directly from Jim Ryan and PlayStation stating they wanted at least 12 live service games released within a year. Followed by tons of official word of those Live Service games being cancelled after he was pushed out. All studios combined at the time PS had 15 studios, 12 is a hell of a lot more than half of 15, and it was definitely their primary focus evident by the fact that a huge portion of their studios have taken uncharacteristically long to release or announce anything since, hell some studios have yet to release anything this gen almost 6 YEARS LATER! The only one making stuff up is you.

It may take a while but maybe they are finally learning. Good! Now stop with the live service crap.

ABizzel198d ago

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a live service here or there, but to have many of your studios start focusing on it when there has been little to no experience among them was wild.

Christopher98d ago (Edited 98d ago )

They say this and then immediately release news of the Horizons co-op game that will definitely be a Live Service game.

isarai_lee97d ago

I feel like they knew that given the fact that the very furst thing they say in the trailer is to reassure they still make so games 😆

vTuro2498d ago

Bet they're regrettings spending those billions pretty hard right now.

S2Killinit97d ago

Destiny has been a huge success.

Redemption-6497d ago

They will not. Destiny has been popular for over 10 years, something most games can never hope to achieve. Most people, including myself those Bungie was going to make a D3 after the final shape DLC. Marathon looks to be a hit and a D3 announcement could break records.
