Games Launching With Barely Any Content Isn't Acceptable Anymore

Twinfinite writes "Mistakes fixed through tireless effort post-launch is one thing, but merely “building a solid foundation” doesn’t constitute a video game experience worth paying $60 for."

I can't even begin to comprehend how this happened. It's not like this is an early-mid generation blunder.

This is pretty much 5 years in. After Halo: Master Chief Collection... After Fable Legends... After Scalebound.

Talk about mismanagement. It's like Phil Spencer and Shannon Loftis visited Rare multiple times over the past couple of years and just let them muck about taking 2 years to make a ship... or didn't even care about the game as a consumer product. Jebus christ, this brand deserves the negativity it attracts. It's not even like Microsoft has a big barrel of exclusive games or a crazy number of studios to manage.

Phil on Twitter a couple of months before the game ships, with a thumbs up for poor quality and barely any content: https://twitter.com/XboxP3/...

Phil Spencer has to be replaced. He has been at the helm for four years now and really has nothing to show for it.

Some professional coaches don't even get two years before they are canned for poor performance.

I love my One X as it allows me to play 3rd party games that look and play really well, but Phil has no vision or ideas for console games and has just turned into a talking head hype man for the brand.

2978d ago
SegaGamer2978d ago

Phil Spencer is basically just a PR guy, he doesn't really have much power. He's a yes man. He does as he is told.

agent45322978d ago

Phil Spencer started good by improving the features of xbox and improving xbox marketing team.Besides that, he fell off the cliff.

ShadowWolf7122978d ago

Wrong. Satya put Phil in charge of the Xbox Division. That's not some sort of PR position. That's Greenberg's job. Phil's job is to oversee the division, the studios, and the IPs. The buck stops with Phil Spencer when it comes to the Xbox division. Satya certainly isn't sitting there micromanaging the GAMING division, of all things.

Phil has responsibility for this, plain and simple. Phil can take their operations budget and order a new IP, build up their first party. Phil simply chooses not to do so in the aim to essentially try to change the market so they never "lose" again.

indysurfn2977d ago (Edited 2977d ago )

Your right he has to go. The problem is not he has no vision. The problem is he visions first party going to PC. And he visions making money off of multitransactions. He envisions renting games (although it seems to be a good investment with the amount of games). My problem with this is will it stay a good investment? Or should I just sign up once a year for a month when their big title hits?

He envisions not much of a future for single player games. He envisions no disc machines. He thinks he can just make way with 3rd party looking better, and a few 1st party. He needs to fight for the person that will only have one, or two consoles. Heck my choice is PS4, and SWITCH if I was only to have two. I have all three but when I think of consoles I keep finding myself thinking what coming out one xbox one. And draw just Sea of thieves for recent example. With SWITCH I have to think LONG AND HARD! Same for PS4 it is not just one game a year on SWITCH AND PS4!

Dragonscale2977d ago

@shadow, so greenberg is a pr guy? Oh the irony lol.

Zabatsu2977d ago

Phil Spencer has become a living meme by now.

We aren't sold games anymore, we're sold concepts that sometimes become games a year later.

3-4-52978d ago

I was all aboard the hype train and defended this game initially.

The game is beyond boring and what there is to do isn't even fun. It's just not mentally stimulating enough compared to most other games I own or have played.

It's a huge disappointment really....because it truly does have a ton of potential.

If I were them I'd move on to the next game for the next gen Xbox.

AnubisG2978d ago

I can. I've seen this starting when the PS3 was released and online was added into the mix. Than they started selling horse armor and single cars and other small "add-ons" for games. I warned people not to buy them because it will lead to this. Everyone called me all sorts of names and told me not to tell them what to do with their money not realizing that they are ruining gaming by telling developers that they are willing to pay more money for less. Now, here we are and all of these same people are crying about the state of gaming.

SegaGamer2978d ago

Yep, i have been saying the same for 10 years now. Gamers should have said no to begin with, now they are complaining alongside us. I thought it was very obvious years ago what kind of future devs/publishers were trying to push gaming towards.

AnubisG2978d ago

@SegaGamer,

Some of us knew where that stuff will lead but most gamers did not and only looked at the immidiate present not caring about the future. Now, we can thank them for the state of gaming today because frankly, they paid for it. These same gamers have also paid for Rockstar to sit on GTA5 and not release a game only many years after.

FinalFantasyFanatic2978d ago

I'm shocked at the amount of people tolerating this crap years ago, it's getting harder now to avoid since these practices are becoming more widespread.

Rachel_Alucard2978d ago

Microsoft started the concept of selling cut up content since day 1 of Xbox live in 2002. Before this the only things you bought digitally were full games and expansions. They did this because they knew they could make more money this way, and they were right more then 16 years later here they are doing the same thing and the rest of the industry has accepted the standard they set.

Where was this writer when Gran Turismo came out. What a joke

G20WLY2978d ago

Probably enjoying his time with Gran Turismo..😊

BlaqMagiq12978d ago

Gran Turismo Sport had much less than GT6 but that game STILL had more content than what Sea of Thieves gives you which is almost nothing.

mcstorm2977d ago

It's a playstation game they don't get hammered on this site. GT5 was a mess and GTS is a quater of the game GT5 was and took just as log in not longer to make than SoT and its also a new ip. No for me I don't care what people say as it looks like the game has generally sold well and people who have played the game also seem to like it all the people I've played online do to. Yes it could of been better with mere content ect but it dose have tee ground works to grow and of Rare update the game with free Addon especially rather than DLC paid Bring it on. As for GTS it's been the same for people I have spoken to about that that they enjoy the game and sales for that have also seemed to of been good to so that said looks like both are doing well dispite the lack of content at the start.

letsa_go2978d ago

It cracks me up that criticizing Rare and Micro$oft is marked as inappropriate...it must be tough work for the xbox fanboy mod to go through all these comments. At least it is keeping them busy!

Rachel_Alucard2978d ago

I've noticed a metric ton of comments being marked as inappropriate despite the comment not violating any obvious rules.

trooper_2978d ago

Because there's plenty of troll accounts around here. Some of my comments have been marked down for no reason either.

Hurt feelings are hurt.

notachance2977d ago

don't forget the instant 200 disagrees when you bash MS

DivineAssault 2978d ago (Edited 2978d ago )

It was a scam to get game pass subscribers.. Easy as that.. Plain as day.. Using Rares once great name to burn their fans who bought physical copies in the process.. Expendable casualties in their eyes too

Phil isn't doing the Microsoft brand any favors. All promises and no show.

ApocalypseShadow2978d ago

It was never acceptable.

Unfinished, buggy, Internet connection required, huge patches at launch who's files are larger than full games, dlc locked on disc, content withheld and sold as dlc at a later date, loot boxes, micro transactions at the level of doa (is it even a fighting game anymore?),platinum-gold-super- alpha-turbo editions of games with ridiculous prices all wrapped up in a "have to install the whole disc on the drive to play wasting space and having to buy even larger hdds to keep up"....is not my idea of FUN.

Needed to vent all that against all systems. But companies need to make complete games. It's why I no longer pre-order games. I wait to see the results and preview video reviews without spoiling too much before buying anything. Learned this thing called *value* years ago. If companies don't put value in their games, then, they don't deserve my money. Period. No matter the company.

Yukes2978d ago

Well said. We seem to be in a generation of stunning artistic achievements on the one hand and insidious, greedy practices on the other. The only way we'll overcome the latter is if critics and consumers come down hard on the perpetrators.

It's definitely not acceptable for $60. This is an early access game that was sold as a full experience. Terrible really...

agent45322978d ago

I was surprised Sea of Thieves was not released as a game preview (Xbox early access program).

FTLmaster2978d ago

Wholeheartedly agree. I know this may be a trite thing to say, but man - I miss the ol’ days...

Frances 'Fracas' Addison: "Season 17 has begun! And some unfamiliar faces have been spied on remote islands as The Smugglers’ League settle in and begin their hunt for high-value, dangerous prizes. It's a shame it seems pretty Sea of Thieves centric

I was hoping for some cool Banjo / Conker merch or maybe a re-release of Rare Relay with some added games, possibly work something out with Nintendo so they can add Goldeneye to it with online support.

Report: Sea of Thieves PS5 Sales Surpass 1 Million

Sea of Thieves, the pirate-themed game from Rare, has reportedly surpassed one million copies sold on the PS5 per a new report.

Jin_Sakai648d ago (Edited 648d ago )

Yea, we’ll be seeing plenty more Xbox exclusives head to PlayStation..

just_looken648d ago (Edited 648d ago )

Just like sony tossing horizon on the switch xbox also sees the potential to double dip for sure.

I do not see xbox past next gen i think in the 2030's xbox will be just a publishing company if not next gen if you look at there console sales it would make sense to also not toss a console out next gen and just focus on software as they are making way more cash on software than hardware.

Now halo on the switch/ps5 hmmm

pwnmaster3000648d ago

Horizon the switch?

Are you talking about the Lego horizon game lol.
Totally different situation.

just_looken648d ago

@pwnmaster3000

Right because sony?

please enlighten us on how sony giving out there best recent ip to another platform is different then xbox putting there ip on other platforms.

Profchaos648d ago

Yeah it'd be crazy not to release horizon Lego on the switch those Lego games sell gangbusters on switch

DodoDojo648d ago

Xbox have been on the decline, Sony can comfortably run their businesses without relying on other systems for revenue. That's the difference.

just_looken648d ago

@DodoDojo

So there huge push to go multi-plat had nothing to do with there failing revenue?

Look at the spike after they tossed there ip's around and the pc sales of there games
https://companiesmarketcap....

Even sony knows were the cash is

@Profchaos

Oh for sure they spent $0 on making the game but will get some great check's in the mail that game is going to sell so well on that platform then they will toss it on switch 2 and or consoles got to have that double dip.

Gamingsince1981648d ago (Edited 648d ago )

Herp derp , maybe if it was actually horizon and not a lego game you might have a point but alas.

-Foxtrot647d ago

There’s no way Lego would make a game for them using one of their IPs and keep it exclusive

It was probably we either release it on the Switch or we don’t do it

If they did a Horizon spin off game for Switch with one of their own first party studios then fair enough, but it’s not. It’s Lego.

pwnmaster3000647d ago

Because it’s a Lego game and not actually one of the main game in the series. Compare to what MS is doing, it’s vastly different.

Now are they going to start releasing games to other platform. Maybe, but to the extent like MS. Who knows, but as of right now, comparing that move to what MS is doing is reaching so much.

DodoDojo647d ago

Man we have games skipping Xbox because the sales numbers aren't worth the time and the difficulties of dealing with the Series S, why in the world would Sony release their games on Xbox?

Christopher647d ago

That first sentence is a horrible argument. Makes no sense and feels like an attempt to shove Sony into this conversation at all.

I think Xbox will try their best to keep hardware around, but it won't be like it is now. I think they'll go all digital and go with a middle-line hardware and not a heavy pusher like the Series X. Something that will play games slightly better than Series X but will have a lot of built-in storage space. They'll, if possible, eat as much of that cost as possible to come under the PS6 in price by as much as possible, but the PS6 will, IMHO, be more powerful, because Sony relies on hardware to maintain their market and will keep it like that until there is no other option.

S2Killinit647d ago (Edited 647d ago )

@just_lookin
You are trying too hard to make it seem like both are doing the same thing. They are not. No buts or ifs about it.

On this topic:
I never played SOT, but its interesting that this game started off as a flop and built up to a relatively successful gaas game.

just_looken647d ago

This site is nuts

So sony tosses there games on pc gives out there ip to other companies for other platform's something they never have done in the past a ip only ps4 had in the past that is normal 0 issues.

Xbox tosses there game on a ps device we must stop the press flip the couch and go on about xbox for weeks.

Man trump needs to hire everyone here for his campaign/trials you all get him back in that chair asap.

PassNextquestion647d ago

If Microsoft wants Gamepass to succeed they need to keep putting out Xbox's. Otherwise they only other place you will see Gamepass is on PC'S, TV'S and Amazon Prime Sticks

Where they'll feel better with DualSense, load faster with the better SSD, and be accessible to more than 2x the console playerbase.

At least Hellblade 2 may come to a platform with a controller that can give its immersion the full respect it deserves. World-class tech for audio and visuals but stuck on an input that's been static since 2005...

just_looken647d ago

https://store.steampowered....

Hellblade 2 is on steam you know a computer were you can use any controller and have great audio.

Are you saying that the ps5 is the only console or device that has ever seen sound past stereo?

A ps5 is the only device to have a fast nvme ssd?

Input sense 2005? umm haptic tech has been around sense 1976
https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...

There is nothing a ds5 does that has not been done before somewere else even price gouging that was apple but now sony does that and crappy battery life man i miss ds3 battery life.

Tacoboto646d ago

You're pathetic and weird, stop with your strawman arguments and need to be antagonistic about everything.

I own the game on Steam and play it with DualSense on there but the features of DualSense are best on PS5 natively. I'm not saying that to refer to the controller speaker only, but the haptics especially *and* having those enhanced haptics wirelessly.

Obscure_Observer647d ago

Vits648d ago

Makes sense. The game sold 5 million copies on Steam and had 30 million players in 2022. So it does have a hook; what it needed to sell on PS was essentially just to be available there.

just_looken648d ago

Does it not have crossplay also? so that too helps

just_looken648d ago

For those not pissed off i mentioned cross play i looked it up and it does have it
https://www.seaofthieves.co...

So people playing for a long time on xbox/pc can join up with people that only have a ps5 that is a nice feature witch again helps with sales.

ocelot07647d ago

It's also cross progression. When it first released in 2018. I bought my self the limited edition controller that came with a code for some unique clothing. I didn't like the game back in 2018 it was bland and empty. When I bought it during a sale on Steam in 2021 I was able to continue on where I left off in 2018 with the things I unlocked as well as my dlc outfit.

Forward to 2024 when I got it on ps5. I again could continue on from pc and still access my Xbox dlc from 2018 and I then got a exclusive playstation sail set.

just_looken647d ago

@ocelot07

That is cool what a great/rare feature to bad all games do not have that.

So no wonder it is selling well if a 2018 player can grab it on his/her ps5 then continue were you left off.

SlothLordPootus648d ago

Honestly less than I would've expected based on the buzz around release, but still a great milestone.
