Boss Key Abandons LawBreakers To Work On New Projects

From GameWatcher: "Cliff Bleszinski and developer Boss Key have announced that they are no longer working on LawBreakers and they will be abandoning further updates to the game to focus on new projects.

The troubled online shooter "failed to find enough of an audience to generate the funds necessary to keep it sustained", and are not planning a move to free-to-play as they do not have the funds for even that. You can see the full statement below."

Heelix2967d ago

at least they're not closing down their studio so that's good news.

SuperSonic912967d ago (Edited 2967d ago )

Cliffy B predicted the demise of the PS4 years ago in favor of mobile gaming so this hapoened to him.

Poor guy . Maybe he needs to understand the meaning of PlayStation more because he seems to not see the magic of PlayStation and what makes it dear to the hearts of millions of gamers around the world.

Zeref2967d ago

Obviously the magic of Playstation didn't do anything for lawbreakers.

gangsta_red2967d ago

@zeref
That large install base can't work every time.

SuperSonic912967d ago (Edited 2967d ago )

@zeref
Positive and negative are two separate things that are opposite of each other.

That demise he directed at PS4 came upon him instead.

Its a negative mistake that will forever haunt him.

He should have more faith on the PlayStation Nation and console gamers in general not just mobile gamers and PC gamers.

I hope he learns his mistake and find redemption along the way.

Death2967d ago

@sonic,

Don’t be a drama queen. We’re just talking video games here.

C-H-E-F2967d ago

@Zeref, the PS4/PS4 Pro don't polish turds, look at No Man's Sky lOl, a turd will be a turd regardless of the platform lOl.

G3ng4r2966d ago

Hahaha, oh man. The magic of playstation crushes those who don't praise or understand the meaning of it. There's no way lawbreakers failed because it was released after similar and better games or because cliffy is a prick in general. Delusional much?

spicelicka2966d ago

Wtf, magic of Playstation? I guess every game that's not on PS4 is an utter failure by that logic.

Playstation has some great games and great exclusives, but jeez dude keep it in your pants. I don't understand the blind love people have for a piece of plastic.

MadLad2966d ago

This has nothing to do with Playstation. The game didn't do well, across the board. I know this is N4G, but can people, like, for one damn day, not treat the Playstation brand as though it were the cure for cancer, and the means of everlasting life?

Maybe don't make another shooter, we have so many these days, especially online based ones. I'd do something single player, story based and maybe a genre that we're lacking in like platforming.

yellowgerbil2967d ago

make a spiritual twisted metal sequel. That genre has been abandoned for nearly a decade. A WHOLE genre he invented. I'd love a car combat game but with a deep story mode where you could create and customize your own vehicle and use parts of cars you destroyed to build a bigger and badder car.

crazychris41242967d ago

Checkout Grip. May not have a story but it's car combat and you can drive on walls and ceiling. Its a lot of fun, coming to consoles later this year.

fenome2967d ago

David Jaffe is behind Twisted Metal, not Cliffy B.

yellowgerbil2967d ago

Fenome
Lol my bad, I knew that just mixed them up momentarily because both of them are in similar situation with a bomb of a online game and on verge of closing shop.

fenome2967d ago

Yeah, Jaffe did that Drawn to life game or whatever, it looked completely uninteresting. I never even tried it, I think it was free too. Lol

gangsta_red2967d ago

Have Cliffy B work on Twisted Metal. It's crazy enough to work.

NarooN2967d ago

Jaffe's last studio, Bartlett Jones Supernatural Detective Agency or whatever actually did close down recently. So not so much on the verge of closing, as they did lol

Jinger2967d ago

Or they can go an online shooter but actually do something unique instead of just trying to rip off Overwatch or quake

2966d ago
Yui_Suzumiya2967d ago (Edited 2967d ago )

I'd argue we have plenty of online shooters. What we need is more story driven shooters like BioShock, Wolfenstein and Half-Life. Something that is severely lacking this generation.

Fist4achin2967d ago

Agreed. There are so many being released, that the bulk of their fanbases cannibalize themselves because the next new, big, and shiny game is coming out next week...

FinalFantasyFanatic2967d ago

Everyone wants to capture Overwatch's success, that's pretty stiff competition, especially when they've cemented themselves in their marketing model. I would like anything that's not another online shooter.

Prince_TFK2967d ago

Just hope they won’t go Battle Royale route this time.

FinalFantasyFanatic2967d ago

I'd be okay with that, I don't think we've reached the saturation point for that genre, but they either need to do it better or add something unique and worthwhile to the genre.

morganfell2967d ago (Edited 2967d ago )

"Maybe don't make another shooter"

You are dead on the money. But that is the hard thing to get people to understand. And by people I mean the individuals in charge. Look at COD4. When it came out everyone wanted to be like it. They wanted that feel and more importantly they wanted that impact. They wanted some of that acclaim. "Gimme some o dat juice!"

But what these people in charge do not seem to comprehend is in order to be the next Call of Duty, you can't be like Call of Duty. You have to do something wholly different so you are that person that perfected the formula. You discover Flubber.

Now the latest thing is Battle Royale. And again people will not understand it already has a top dog. Move on. Want to be the next whatever? Do not be like that thing whose success you are chasing. The issue is the risk averse nature of investors. You can't get them to take that leap of faith. I don't see Clifford as being the guy that is going to come up with that original idea or at the very least an amalgam of previous ideas combined and perfected.

FinalFantasyFanatic2967d ago

On the money, too many followers and not enough leaders.

Death2967d ago

Cliff cut his teeth on online shooters. Call of Duty came much later than Unreal. As unique as unreal was, it was inspired by id’s Wolfenstein and Doom. To say their are too many shooters is silly. To be successful, developers have to take their chosen genre further. Lawbreakers didn’t do enough to be compelling. It was either a bad idea or a poorly executed good idea. Either way it was a failure and hopefully a good learning experience for the next project.

Blu3_Berry2967d ago

Don't blame him honestly. Just take the loss and move on. In my opinion, just make a fantastic single player game. That will garner alot more attention and will be less risky if you play your cards right.

Sgt_Slaughter2967d ago (Edited 2967d ago )

I mean yes he has no other option, but this disaster of a game is all his fault. I expect to see it next to Battleborn in the Five Below game section pretty soon.

(EDIT: I forgot this is a digital game with only physical copies coming from Limited Run. Point still stands if it did get a major release though.)

"I wanna make another billion dollar I.P." - Cliff Bleszinski

stokedAF2967d ago

This is just happening now? lol.. I like the guy personally, he was kind of a douche but he had a personality and an enthusiasm. I hope his next venture turns out better than this. Maybe try making something gamers want instead of something he wants.

LawBreakers Being Revived Unofficially, Public Test Happening This Weekend

After six years since servers were killed off, LawBreakers is being revived in an unofficial capacity with playtests happening this weekend.

coolbeans766d ago (Edited 766d ago )

Hey, if Gigantic can garner enough attention it can happen for LawBreakers too. Funny thing is that both would share a similar story if going multiplatform:

-Gigantic remained Xbox One/PC until closure
-LawBreakers remained PS4/PC until closure

vTuro24766d ago

Oh shit, it's actually happening? This game was pretty dope. Shame the marketing was shit-tier.

Walalon765d ago

Yeah, the marketing side for this game was Uber Trash. But the gameplay was awesome

Lawbreakers was never successful, and therefore not worth reviving. It was hero-shooter [incorrectly labeled as an arena] that failed cash in off the popularity of Overwatch.

Gwiz1121d ago

LMAO I guess he really thought it was going to be competition.
This wasn't the only game that failed and claiming to be something entirely different.

Battleborn anyone?.

IamTylerDurden11121d ago (Edited 1121d ago )

Battleborn flopped but had more going for it than Lawbreakers. Oh how i had wanted to like BB. It had solid art and characters and a campaign but the gameplay nor story were there.

kryteris1121d ago

it having mobile graphics should have targeted that.

Inverno1121d ago

I'm still amazed this guy opened a new studio, and then shut it down after their first game flopped. Your excuses didn't matter cause all that people got was their money taken, and a product they could no longer play.
