Far Cry 5 Review - IGN

The wilderness of Montana isn't as exotic a playground, but it's just as full of things to do.

JaguarEvolved3024d ago (Edited 3024d ago )

Why didn't they just give it a 9 out of a 10. I guess it didn't deserve that .1. I like this game a lot from the but I've played so far. I've got the pc version and I'm very happy I haven't encountered any glitches or issues so far.

showtimefolks3024d ago

Because ign took points of a game for having too much water. Ign stands for ignorance

PhantomS423024d ago

You must feel pretty proud of yourself for thinking of this complete original joke...oh wait, it's extremely old, extremely overused, and extremely dead.

MegamanXXX3024d ago (Edited 3024d ago )

I've got the PC version as well! Definitely a beautiful game in true native 4K 60fps

hulk_bash19873024d ago

Their whole rating system is antiquated and redundant. The difference between a 9 and 8.9 is so negligible, it's ridiculous.

DrumBeat3024d ago

The reviewer felt it was almost a 9, yet wasn't. Why people get triggered over such pettiness is beyond me.

hulk_bash19873023d ago

@DrumBeat
Its not petty to point out how redundant IGN's rating system is. I am not attacking the person for their opinion on the game They are entitled to score it however they feel.

GUTZnPAPERCUTZ3024d ago

Far Cry 3 got a 9.0 from IGN, so saying its almost as good as 3 makes it a 8.9 lol

Xenophon_York3024d ago

This seems more like it. Am around ten hours in and I'm quite happy with the quality. I lived the first twenty years of my life in a county very similar to Hope County—and, quite frankly: it's kind of eerie.

Graphics could be better. In fairness I have been playing a lot of Rise of the Tomb Raider lately, so maybe I have unrealistic expectations.

I see no reason this game should get under an eight/ten score. Any reviewer that does is simply trolling or disrespecting the gaming community and doesn't deserve the public's ear. Because the general public, after-all, is who reviewers rate games for—not themselves.

Ricegum3024d ago

Huh. The graphics are exceptional.

Xenophon_York3024d ago

Am running on a PlayStation 4 Pro and a 55" LG OLED C7, so I assure you, the textures I'm seeing on Far Cry 5 do not look as good as Horizon Zero Dawn, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt or Rise of the Tomb Raider.

While the in-game objects themselves are beautifully sculpted with high polygon counts, the textures are rough—at least rougher than games like I mentioned above. The textures of the fingers holding a gun when your character runs into a wall, for example, are undeniably blurry.

I did read that some PlayStation 4 Pro gamers are having some trouble with the "Render Mode" option not showing up in the settings. Maybe that's why I'm noticing the texture issues. But I am without-a-doubt witnessing some rough textures in places.

Hardiman3024d ago

Render mode isn't on mine just HDR but it looks amazing!

GUTZnPAPERCUTZ3024d ago

Textures are better than Horizon and the witcher 3 imo. I have Horizon on Pro, TW3 on X and FC5 on X and it looks AMAZING! I have a 55" M series Vizio 4k HDR 10 120hz

bbradley3024d ago

I am also running the game on a PS4 Pro and a 55" LG OLED C7. I wholeheartedly agree, the graphics are nowhere near as good as Horizon or Tomb Raider, but they are still exceptional. I never see the Render Mode option in my settings. Is this a common issue?

GUTZnPAPERCUTZ3024d ago

I think a big part of it is the fact that you are in FP so you are "Closer" to all the raw textures vs games like HZD, TR and TW3 which are TP so you are further back making them look more sharp.

Xenophon_York3024d ago (Edited 3024d ago )

Thanks, bbradley. I don't think some of the gamers downvoting me understand that the C7 is arguably the top television under three thousand dollars. 4K Mode turned on for Rise of the Tomb Riader makes a world of difference on the Pro with the C7. I can't play it without it switched on. And I'm usually more of a frame-rate guy over resolution.

There was a story that Pro gamers we're supposed to get "Render Mode" but it's missing for some of, or all of us. It's been addressed at Ubisoft Support—so we'll see.

darthv723024d ago

Well that's the problem right there York... should have been running it on an X.

I kid.. I kid.

Xenophon_York3024d ago

Hahaha, darthv72. Fair play. Fair play.

@GUTZnPAPERCUTZ

Yeah, I considered the first-person-shooter perspective into my deliberation. It's partly, that but mainly just less detailed textures.

My trade is cinematography/photography so I'm weird about spending a lot of time in photo mode in games. I've spent hours assessing the textures on Horizon Zero Dawn and guarantee you HZD has significantly better textures than Far Cry 5. When you get the chance, zoom in on the Thunderjaw—I suggest disabling it first—and let your own jaw drop in amazement how almost unnecessarily fine the textures are.

Let's go with the baseline of 7/10 that IGN has set for a game with no content, that being Sea of Thieves. I think it's time IGN goes to a 20 point scale since sot would be worthy of a 7/20. I just find it impossible to believe a game with as much content as far cry is only a 8.9...again since we've established sot is a 7.

darren_poolies3024d ago

But Sea of Thieves and Far Cry 5 are completely different types of games and reviewed by different people. Plus more content ≠ better game.

Xenophon_York3024d ago

Been reading this comment splattered here and there on a few different articles. You can absolutely compare Far Cry 5 and Sea of Thieves together when determining a myriad of topics about quality. It's what happens every year when a Game of the Year award is rewarded to one game out of the entire industry that year.

dripdrop303024d ago

My OCD is acting up.. Why not give it a 9?

DaMist3024d ago

This guy's reviews always both amuse and confuse me, because his tone never matches the final score he gives any particular game. Sometimes he praises it and gives it a middle of the road score, other times he sounds barely into it and the score is way up there haha.

Played and enjoyed Far Cry, Far Cry 3 and 4 campaigns .

-Foxtrot846d ago

4 wasn’t so bad

Pagan Min was pretty entertaining

Skuletor846d ago

Yeah, 4 was good, was hard choosing which Golden Dawn member to side with, when they were both pieces of sh!t.
I've beaten all the main entries except 2 and 6, ended up uninstalling 6 to download something else instead.

Profchaos846d ago

I'd love a far cry pack with the original PC game (not the half assed port on ps360) instincts, predator even a port of far cry 2 to modern consoles back when these games had their own identity and weren't far cry 3 cut and pastel

Demetrius846d ago

Still one of my most favorite franchises along with assassins creed

banger88846d ago (Edited 846d ago )

Same here, I don't know why these games get so much hate. I've thoroughly enjoyed every single one of them, with only a couple of exceptions. I wish they'd hurry up and announce Far Cry 7. The only thing I'm concerned about is the rumoured time limit.

Far Cry 5 Has Surpassed 30 Million Players Worldwide

The 2018 first-person shooter has reached this milestone exactly 5 years after its initial release.

Profchaos1197d ago

When you're free on every single service it's eventually going to happen.

Profchaos1197d ago

Part of PS plus at the moment

ChasterMies1196d ago

Far Cry 5 is “free” if you pay for PS+ Extra.

gangsta_red1196d ago

Going to have to try and get back into Far Cry. The formula for Far Cry may be fun, but it gets repetitive very fast.

Demetrius1196d ago

Been playing this series since far cry 3 I love the adventuring vibe this series gives off even far cry primal is so good, but experiencing far cry 5 in 60 fps crisp graphics on ps5 for the first time is dope it adds life to it, I wana give far cry 6 a second chance couldn’t get into it at first I wonder if it’s worth it

Far Cry 5 in native 60 FPS - available for PS5 & Xbox Series consoles now

Far Cry 5 Official Twitter: "You've been waiting long enough… Welcome to Hope County! Experience Far Cry 5 in native 60 FPS - available for PS5 & Xbox Series consoles … NOW! Far Cry 5 will also have a FREE WEEKEND from March 23-27 on all consoles & PC. Enjoy!"

banger881210d ago

Damn. I replayed it recently on SX with fps boost, and to achieve that they had to downgrade the resolution. Game played great but looked like ass. Wish I had've waited.

blackblades1210d ago (Edited 1210d ago )

So you saying fps boost lowers the resolution to achieve 60fps? Cause that culteastwitch was praising in a fanboy cok suking way.

Darkwatchman1210d ago

It depends on the game. Some keep Xbox One X resolution. Others drop to base Xbox One resolution and settings.

Knushwood Butt1210d ago

Nice
Waiting to play this on Extra but have had too much else to play.
So is this a native PS5 version or does the PS4 version run at 60fps on PS5?

Jin_Sakai1210d ago

As expected, Far Cry 5 will now run at 60 frames-per-second on PS5,

“as part of a patch that optimises the PS4 game on Sony's new-gen console.”

Knushwood Butt1210d ago

Downloading now. I might do a bit of pancake gaming this weekend.

Eidolon1210d ago

Not native PS5. But still looked pretty good on PS4 Pro, and at a solid 60fps, definitely a good experience. Sadly games can't break out of PS4 Pro resolutions, for some reason.

LucasRuinedChildhood1209d ago

PS4 games can run 2-2.5 times better on PS5. They're basically just changing the framerate cap to take advantage of that. They could actually change the resolution but it might affect the framerate - it's not a native PS5 game so it can't properly take advantage of the hardware. 1620p isn't bad, tbh.

Eidolon1210d ago

Was really hoping to read that New Dawn would be upgraded as well. :( Already beat Far Cry 5 + and only like 1 hr into New Dawn.

KeeseToast1210d ago (Edited 1210d ago )

Pretty nice 👍
Now we’ll only need fps boost for:
Arkham Knight
Bloodborne
The Last Guardian
Assassin‘s Creed Unity
Shadow of the Colossus
Gravity Rush 2

Did I forget something?

Welshy1210d ago

The worst part about AC Unity is that it *does* run natively at 60fps, but only when running the 1.0 version from the disc. If you allow the game to update, future patches applied a 30fps cap for some reason.

I don't see any reason it would be difficult to just lift the cap that they added.

CML21210d ago

Shadow of the Colossus already runs at 60fps.
Its possible to play The Last Guardian at 60fps with an unpatched disc version too.

Stanjara1210d ago

So why not unlock framerate cap on the latest version? Can't be that hard.

CML21209d ago

Probably because the studio doesnt exist anymore. 🥲

LucasRuinedChildhood1209d ago (Edited 1209d ago )

Absolutely. RDR2 still sells very well so the lack of a next gen version after GTA5 next gen is really annoying.
