What makes a console successful – according to Microsoft

"Don't use our console – use our system." Although a marketing strategy like this may seem risky, Microsoft puts its trust in it. But is sacrificing tons of exclusives the right way of 'making Xbox great again?' We investigate.

“What makes a console successful – according to Microsoft”

“Don't use our console – use our system.”

Coming from a company with the least successful console this generation.

I think we should take a look at Sony and Nintendo and see ourselves what makes a console successful.

chrisx3007d ago (Edited 3007d ago )

ms are the last people on this planet I would ever listen to on this subject. we all know their blueprint for a "successful" system : gaas and mts and drm. no thanks I'll look at Sony and ninty for that.

" Coming from a company with the least successful console this generation. "

According to generation 8 consoles, that would be the Wii U.

I know, I know we like to pretend it didn't exist.

carry on

PhoenixUp3006d ago

Nintendo has the least successful console of the generation...

SuperSonic913006d ago

Not just this generation but of all time!

yellowgerbil3006d ago

The switch is still 8th gen. Just like the Atari 2600 and 5200 are the same generation just like the Sega system 1-3 and master system are the same gen.

Supersonic, no look at the pippin or that bandai/canon system.

PhoenixUp3006d ago

@ yellow

Regardless of how you classify Switch, that really doesn’t matter here. NS doesn’t automatically make Wii U a nonexistent console

michellelynn09763004d ago

The Wii U was on Nintendo. Their E3 showing it off was terrible and their marketing was nonexistent. I love Nintendo, but they did soooo much wrong with the Wii U.

Least successful console of the generation?

Are you really trying to disregard the Wii U that much that you’re trying to act like it doesn’t exist?

I always laugh when I see responses from armchair business analyst. Most think success is measured by console sales.

johndoe112113006d ago

Well, if it isn't then I guess the wiiu was a SMASHING success :/

lptmg3006d ago

well it was a piece of shit of a system that actually had a great library

Hardware sales which drive a high attach rate and subscription rate. I imagine MS only wishes they had moved the same number of consoles which Sony has. Hard to sell XBL without selling the console.

The Wood3006d ago

Lol. . Who's position do you think ms would prefer to be in. . Theirs or Sony's or Nintendo's.?

More sales, more revenue potential . It doesn't have to be a false equivalency to make you feel better about Microsoft's position bro. .

Games make the console successful i mean is a fucking Video Game Console not a car. So get your arse in gear Microsoft and put out games for your game's console.

PhoenixUp3006d ago

Microsoft is more concerned with creating an ecosystem than working on the individual console

King_Lothric3006d ago

Because they failed working on an individual console and now they are looking into other ways to stay relevant.

rainslacker3005d ago

That was always their concern. They created Xbox to get more people using Windows. The people who first created the Xbox ethos had aspirations to make a great console experience for that purpose. now, it seems MS is just more focused on the service and Windows, and not as focused on making a product which actually compels people to use the product, whereas MS wants people to be compelled to use the service.

jhoward5853006d ago (Edited 3006d ago )

MS is all over the place. They split their money in too many avenues(new tech, cloud, etc) which over exceed beyond their budget for gaming alone. They aren't willing to spend their money beyond their budget limit so somethings end up lacking because of it. They need to be more focused on gaming only if they want to succeed.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio51d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing51d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9251d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit51d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing51d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9251d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
