What Studios Should Microsoft Look at Acquiring?

Two of TICGN's editors try to come up with theoretical answers to an increasingly popular question: What studios should Microsoft look at acquiring?

Sciurus_vulgaris2965d ago (Edited 2965d ago )

Playground Games is the studio Microsoft should most logically purchase. Playground is a proven developer, I am very interested to see how the studios non-racing project (likely Fable). However,we don’t know if Playground wants to be bought. I would rather Microsoft enlarge the Coalition, 343i and Turn 10, and give creative freedom to the 3 studios.

Additionally, looking at how Sea of Thieves is being received. Rare need some new management or restructuring. It is unacceptable for Rare to be so inefficient when compared 343i, the Coalition and Turn 10. The latter studios make AAA games in 2-3 years and thier titles have a good amount of content and review well. Meanwhile, Rare over the cross of 3-4 years made a title with marginal content and a lower reception. Rare may have affectively killed their game from release....

I have high hopes for Ori 2 this year. I also have some interest in Crackdown 3 and State of Decay 2. However, if the rumours of ‘Fable 4’ and the rebooted Perfect Dark aren’t true. The only true high production quality AAA games one could expect from MS would be Halo 6, Gears 5 and more Forza.

After the sea of thieves debacle, I would prefer if Microsoft, didn't buy anyone. The track record of success is non existent.

super excited for state of decay 2 and ori the will of the wisps but I think crackdown 3 will be another disaster unfortunately. I'm actually loving sea of thieves but I'm obviously in the minority

Difference is 343i, the Coalition and Turn 10 only make games from established Ip's. None of them have made a new IP since they were established, 343 and Coalition are just continuing what was started by Bugie and Epic. Rare has tried making new Ip's and failed.

DaDrunkenJester2962d ago

I wouldn't say Rare has failed.

Say what you will about them focusing on Kinect, but their games were the best ones for the dang device. Also Viva Pinata (not really my style) was well received as well.

SoT is sitting at 70 on meta and had over a million unique players day one and topped the UK charts for the week... I wouldn't really classify that as a "Failure". Did it live up to the ridiculous hype and pressure people put on it? Doesn't seem like it.

"So Wtf would i buy a Xbox 1 much less a less Xbox x, i would have mental issues."

I wouldn't go that far.

Most people even if they had a Ps4 might not be interested in those exclusive games, Majority of my friends all play in COD, BF1 and Fortnite which is on Xbox.

I myself enjoy the exclusives, but i'm only speaking for myself.

MS tends to manage from above. New management would require the management within MS itself to be changed up, and I doubt they see it as them doing a bad job. The board, or group that oversees the management within their devices division would have to see the management needs changing up, and I'm not convinced they care that much given that Spencer is now part of that group. If anything, it appears that MS is happy with what Spencer has done or achieved, or at least have confidence that he can achieve something.

Ori 2 probably will be good though, but MS doesn't manage that studio. In fact, many 2nd party games from MS this gen have been pretty good.

@2pac

Making games in an existing franchise doesn't mean it'll be good. Halo 5 had criticism over it's campaign. GeOW was probably the worst in the series. About the only thing MS has been consistent on is Forza, which is more like a sports franchise to them, where each release is just a refined version of the prior iteration.

SOT is a success. Stop reading bs from the bias site trying to down play any game from Xbox. No man sky had to refund owners of the game can’t say that about sea of thieves. Lower install base and came in as #1. Has a digital entry point of $10 and sold more physical copies as an exclusive. That is success...

badboyz092962d ago (Edited 2962d ago )

EA they both SUCK!!!!!!!!!

conanlifts2962d ago

I think they should expand studios as you said plus purchase a few new large studios. Personally i think they need something huge like capcom. Particularly if they want to be the Netflix of gaming.
In addition the management at rare should be held accountable for ignoring all of the alpha and beta feedback. The feedback all said great game but very lacking in content and variety. Yet they failed to address this.

They should be investing in the ones they have, and supporting brand new IPs from those studios.

Direwolf4842964d ago

I absolutely agree. All four (heck, maybe even Mojang but that's a small team) are worth doubling down on. Just thought it was interesting to look at who else they should "bring into the family" so to speak.

ziggurcat2964d ago

I mean, I wouldn't be upset if they picked up the studio that made cuphead...

Gaming_1st2962d ago

@ziggurcat

WTF. So let MS buy another company and squeeze the life out of them to make them irrelevant? Good choice.....SMDH

Cyborgg2963d ago (Edited 2963d ago )

Microsoft don't operate in that way. I expect them to take the easy way out and just buy EA and Valve and call it a day

PS. I see them trying to invest in Steam

Gaming_1st2962d ago

ROFLMAO.....FUNNIEST THING I HAVE SEEN IN A WHILE.

Atticus_finch2963d ago

They can't acquire any until they can run the few they have, otherwise what's the point.

The Wood2963d ago (Edited 2963d ago )

Manage the ones you have in your nest better before you acquire more. Baby steps mate. I get that they desperately need new talent and ideas but others things have to change high up including the ethos before real improvements can be sustained. Get your lap times up before you jump to into the car with a bigger engine

_-EDMIX-_2963d ago

That's actually exactly how I feel I used to always feel that Microsoft didn't have enough Studios but it's starting to realize that the problem has nothing to do with that they don't have enough it's everything to do with how they're currently treating the ones they already have ,so they can't just get a studio and dedicate them to just the Fable Gears of War Halo what have you and then to our amazement those Studios begin to create lackluster experiences that begin to fatigue the audience.

What is sad is they closed-down lionhead for not performing well but it's like what did you guys expect you guys basically only gave them the ability to make Fable then you're shocked that they're getting fatigued and uninspired? Could you imagine if the only thing that Sony did for the last three generations was release Jak and Daxter and naughty dog never got to make Uncharted or The Last of Us? Understand that just because Sony hires them to make Jak and Daxter that doesn't mean inside of those writers Minds that those games are not being thought of because one day that team is going to have enough of that crap and they're going to leave Sony and go to another publisher that inevitably ends up making Uncharted or the last of us so people need to understand that people make games ,not just companies.

Believe me Destiny existed in someone's mind while they were working at Microsoft.....

So it seems like there's a pattern of a lot of EX Microsoft developers making something else somewhere else. If anything Capcom would be another good example of this look at how many of their former developers went on to find success elsewhere like with Evil Within or Bayonetta Vanquish would have you.

Gaming_1st2962d ago

Amen brother, well said.

ajax172962d ago

The only logical solution

Gaming_1st2962d ago

MS, doesn't care as long you buy their box and use cable. Who give two shits about games.....SMDH. Sad thing is people actually defend MS, im sorry you're mentally ill.

Microsoft needs to purchase platinum games because MS needs some fast-paced action game like Nier, devil man's cry, etc. The next studio MS should purchase is sega because they have the franchises that I think will grab many gamers attention, including the Japanese gamers. Third devs MS should purchase is playground because they have proven themselves to be a good fit for MS. Last but not least, MS should purchase From software because they have showcased some of the best action horrors in gaming and FS would be a great addition to MS's line up of studios.

DigitalRaptor2964d ago

I couldn't imagine a more incompatible studio for them to pick up after how Scalebound ended up.

rainslacker2962d ago

God no. I like Platinum games. I can't imagine MS and P* would coexist happily, and likely, the creative talent that exists within that studio would just go elsewhere. Buying P* would just give MS a name and some franchises. Franchises that MS doesn't seem to care about to begin with, and if they don't care, then they aren't likely to do anything meaningful with them.

MS does need more games like you say, but they need to make them good. Just having them means nothing.

Atticus_finch2962d ago

Wow that's a horrible idea. Would Xbox fans even support those games, highly doubt it. Ps4 gets criticism for having those amazing games.

Dragonscale2962d ago (Edited 2962d ago )

After the scalebound debacle lol. If ms bought platinum no one would stick around to make any games. Anyhow the last thing they'd wanna do is end up making shallow multiplayer based gaas, platinum make single player games tbh which goes against ms's current policy. Fat chance.

FinalFantasyFanatic2962d ago

Please don't let them take platinum games, I'll be really upset.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio6d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing6d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster926d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit6d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing6d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster926d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
