I've no problem at all with microtransactions as long as they don't give you a gaming advantage.

Activision Blizzard made over 4 billion USD in 2017 from microtransactions.
This was the news posted a few days ago. Whether they've learnt their lesson or not is not the real question. The real question is have the consumer learnt their lesson. Yearly reports on microtransactions proves otherwise.
Can't really blame these publisher 100% when the ones who can actually have the power to cripple such practices doesn't seem to take necessary actions. They just keep on buying and in turn these publisher keep on feeding.

This should surprise no one! EA themselves had said microtransactions would come back at a later date (literally in the same announcement that said they were taking them out) they got all the suckers they needed in games sales (since they "fixed" the problem) now they can gain even more with microtransactions. I fully expect them to post huge gains in microtransactions as well.

Everyone should read the book, The ultimate history of videgames. It will really shed some light on the dirty side of the games business. It's been like this since the beginning starting with pinball machines and Atari. Great read and informative.

People will pay, they'll make more money and continue their trend of microtransactions. It's abusive and harmful yet they still sold 9+ million copies. It hasn't met sales expectations (I think they were anticipating 15mil?) but either way, we lose. All we wanted was a decent Start Wars game....

Only way for EA to stop or for other greedy publishers to stop is for the regulators to step in and put an end to all this high way robbery. Consumers need serious protection from predatory pay to win gambling practices, especially kids. I cannot wait for the day the legislators and regulators step in. Ohh the look in EA's face.

Kids have been raised with smart phones that had free to play games filled with microtransactuons. They have always had MT in their games and will continue to pay for these MT not realizing they are changing the gaming landscape for consoles into a MT for full price games. But again these kids won't know the difference and not know there is an issue with MTs and continue the ripoff.

It's not EA that needs to learn anything, it's the gamers. If you lot are going to criticise their methods and then continue to buy their stuff, then what do you expect? To make them change, the gamers are the ones that have to make the move. They are making money, a lot of it, do you really think they will change because people moan on the internet? No, the only way you will get the change you ask for is if you turn your words into actions.

Stop buying their games. Either put up, or shut up.

I mean what have they got to lose now? They have had the bulk of the sales of the game so now they can throw microtransactions back in without much risk to themselves.

1. Gamers will say stuff like well no one forcing you to buy just play the game and earn it(and use family and time as an excuse)

2. The game sold 7 million and by now over 8 million if you wanted EA to pay attention and learn this game shouldn't have sold anything above 2-3 million

Did you miss the Activision conference call where they made more money from MT than actually selling their games. Did you miss when EA said they make more than 500 million just from Fifa MT

Raise the price of the game to $69.99, Game development is becoming expensive(not because it's becoming more expensive but because publishers spend millions more on advertisement and that budget is considered part of development now a days) and sooner or later we as a community need to allow a $10 raise

Never touched division, destiny, cod, bf, overwatchs etc, that's why i like single players games but some of these MT are now being put into SP games too

Publishers are making more money than ever from recurrent consumer spending. If gamers want this kind of thing to stop they need to stop buying games that include these features.

The article author is making the suggestion that basically 5 million people were upset by mt's and didn't buy BF2. That's a big leap.

Lots of casual Star Wars fans hadn't had a SW game in a decade, that's one reason why the first one sold more. With BF2, mt's or not, the 'need' to buy one isn't there. The casuals can still play the first. Meanwhile, quite a few no doubt didn't have fun in the first one and decided not to pick up the 2nd one.

On top of this is the strange new trilogy that has really soured long time fans of the Star Wars franchise overall. Just look at the difference in box office between TFA and TLJ. 2.06 Billion vs 1.32 billion. If you check the numbers, it's drop off is just about the same as 14 million sales down to 9. Almost EXACTLY.

Both saw about 64 percent vs 64.2 percent of sales versus the previous movie/game.

Star Wars, a franchise I love, just isn't what it used to be. Long time fans aren't clamoring for Disney Star Wars. The excitement just isn't there.

EA and Disney screwed up.

People spoke with their wallets, but it was more of all the above reasons (and maybe more) rather then just micro transactions.

Oh and I also remember hearing the Star Wars merchandise has been doing bad too. Lot of it wasn't selling, and lots of discounts. I do remember seeing lots of discounts on SW merchandise during xmas buying season.

The headline is misleading.... it should be "Have gamers learnt nothing?"
EA are not like many other gaming companies. They are not trying to provide excellent gaming experiences, they are just interested in making the business of milking the gamers wallets of all their cash as cosmetically pleasing as possible.
Compare games like Fortnight, PUBG or Overwatch and there you have companies that build games with a passion and want to make their games incredibly rewarding and enjoyable while making lots of money from it.
And then you have EA who make games that are just games developed specifically to milk the absolute guts out of a gamer. From FIFA with its completely similar game design to the previous year but huge developments made on FIFA packs and loot buying, to F1 using the exact same animations as the past 2 years with just a few slight gameplay tweaks to reduce manpower and development time costs to maximise profits, to Star Wars spending more time putting in expensive loot boxes rather than actual gameplay..... it is obvious that money is 80% of what they think about and 20% is about making a game to fit around that business, while the other studios and developers are all about 80% gameplay and experience, and 20% about how to build a profitable business around the game.

To me it shows they do mot care about backlash. They have mot made the revenue they wanted and will do what they can to change it. I stopped playing after Crait update.

They said they were fixing the progression system. If you think MTs are going to disappear then you are a joke, you live in an alternate reality. What is it they need to learn exactly? That activision made 4 billion dollars in MTs? I can only imagine EAs MT revenue stream. It might be close with the sports titles. The fake twitter controversies aren’t as impactful as you think they are. Your opinion pieces are forgotten in a week tops. Cash rules everything around us. The sooner you learn that the better.

I've played several games that have MT's like Shadow of War,Overwatch,Destiny 2 & a few others & I didn't buy one MT to enjoy the game.I will buy any game that interest me & if it has MT's so be it,as long as I'm paying for the game I wont be buying any MT's what so ever.I pay MT's nada.

I can't take the EA hate seriously. Don't get me wrong. I don't like when any company abuses MTs. But you have game after game coming with the MTs and they don't get half the amount of hate EA does. This hate towards SWBF 2 is only gamers looking for someone to take all the blame instead of distributing the blame across the industry.

Tell me again how the multiplatform strategy was supposed to fix everything. Look at your results and compare them to Nintendo, which keeps thriving with exclusives. Your loyal fans are gone. And let’s not forget the pile of IPs you purchased only to let them rot.

The worst thing is this is down from last years numbers/expectations which was down from the previous years numbers/expectations. You think about how long “down” has been a consistent part of the communication and you realize those subscriptions are what’s holding that boat together. The price cut of gamespass is still a price raise in a string of price raises. They are trying to use players to offset the missing revenue. Now call of duty is out of gamespass, which is literally WHY they bought the company. To draw people to the subscription. They realized they missed a boatload of money and that wasn’t sustainable. Now you pay for it like you would have if they never bought the company… so why buy the company? Mind you those billions still need to be paid back. Yeah it gives you a chance to say we make the biggest FPS… but the internal conversations must be brutal at high level on topics that really matter. Like revenue. Profitability. And ROI for the shopping spree.

Is this like the 10th quarter in a row they're down 33% on hardware how is that even mathematically possible. You would think their mediocrity would Plateau
