Microsoft today announced that they are acquiring PlayFab, a leading backend platform provider for cloud-connected games. PlayFab’s tools already support games across various platforms on mobile, PC and console ecosystem. PlayFab powers more than 1,200 live games, and have served over 700 million players. PlayFab’s backend services reduce the barriers to launch for game developers, offering both large and small studios cost-effective development solutions that scale with their games and help them engage, retain and monetize players. PlayFab enables developers to use the intelligent cloud to build and operate games, analyze gaming data and improve overall gaming experiences.

Like that they are buying in and investing more into gaming.

EasilyTheBest3037d ago

This is a great buy for Microsoft, they definitely seem to have a long term plan in place. I can't wait to see what's to come especially with Gamepass, I'm signing up for that as soon as Sea of Thieves drops...

AngelicIceDiamond3036d ago

MS is doing what I think they should of done ages ago. And that's simply throw money around, well they need to do it intelligently or else we'll have Scalebound situations. Speaking of Scalebound its clear MS was stung by the whole situation and being proactive about their gaming a year later, glad MS is taking control and responsibility in their gaming space. Older Ips making a comeback, Promotions in MS studios, Playfab acquisition, gamepass to support new release MS games. as disingenuous as it sounds to throw money at things MS needs to do something to get the games rolling tbh so why not?

dirkdady3036d ago

Is this Microsoft equivalent to Sony's Gaikai aqusition? Odd cuz I thought MS stance was to leverage in house Azure. Did they finally give up and go with an established platform that's dedicated to gaming?

Sciurus_vulgaris3037d ago (Edited 3037d ago )

Over the past few years MS has acquired Havok, Simplygon and now Playfab. All the previously mentioned purchases should benefit ME as a producer and leaser of game software. Rumours are starting to float around of MS creating and acquiring game development studio.

But what about the games? I’m tired of them “investing in games” but all I ever hear about is tech.

Very nice. Looks like MS is making some big power moves. Lets see if these moves manifest in anything at this year's E3.

christocolus3036d ago

Yup. cant wait to see what they have planned.

mark_parch3036d ago

I'm trying not to get too excited for e3 this year after being disappointed with both sony and Microsoft last year

AngelicIceDiamond3036d ago

This was a rumor as of yesterday https://www.bleedingcool.co... It seems like a pretty strong rumor since IGN has it on their site. Here's the IGN link http://www.ign.com/articles...

E3 will be interesting if MS really considered in buying them out.

JackBNimble3036d ago

Judging by all their years of proactiveness.... Not much will come out of this at all.

Gazondaily3036d ago

Well who knows. Don't blame you for being pessimistic mind you

dekke3036d ago

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio25d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing25d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9225d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit25d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing25d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9225d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
