WTF? are VR headsets gonna get smartphone like refresh after just a couple of years too now?

babadivad3032d ago

If so, how is this a bad thing?

badz1493032d ago

sorry I forgot PC crowd loves to throw money at every new iteration of hardware every year.

but I think incremental upgrade like this is what will make it an even less desirable product because people are gonna wait for the next one. this is not even 4K for god sake and the Vive is not exactly cheap to begin with! are you guys really telling me that you just spent $800 in 2016 and now is totally OK that a Pro version is out just over a year later? WOW...

@badz149

"sorry I forgot PC crowd loves to throw money at every new iteration of hardware every year."

The exact same thing happens in the mobile phone market, TV market, Automobile market. Hell, consoles are probably the ONLY market that doesn't refresh every year.

If you spend 30K on a Jeep and a new one comes out next year, are you going to spend 30K on another Jeep? Fuck no.

Same with graphics cards. The GTX 1080 isn't targeting the people who had 980 cards. It's targeting people who are running GTX 780s. It's a worth while upgrade for those users. Sure, some will upgrade every year, but that's the vast minority.

Most people don't upgrade the graphics cards every year. It's more like once every 3 years. Because in 3 years, graphic hardware usually has progressed enough that it's worth your money to upgrade from what you currently have.

People who spend 3K on an OLED TV aren't buying next years model.

People who spent $800 on a HTC Vive aren't spending another $800 the next year. And the ones who do, are in the VAST minority.

It's kind of sad I have to explain something so simple to you.

@badz,

VR is still a pretty small and exclusive group of gamers. Higher resolution and the incoming wireless sets will bring in another wave of gamers that are holding out for better quality visuals.

NecrumOddBoy3032d ago (Edited 3032d ago )

Yeah, the technology is growing fast and this is a great thing. If we can make a 78% Jump within 2 years of VR being out in large, then in just a few short years, it'll be READYPLAYERONE. I love my PSVR and am a believer in the tech. I look forward to seeing where this will go. It's incredible.

nonpracticingatheist3032d ago

as long as the older tech is properly supported I don't see the downside. Smartphones have a 1 yr refresh cycle. There is no confirmed date for the launch of this so it could be more than 2 years. Wireless VR can't come soon enough imo.

jukins3032d ago

Yea it's crazy how people are upset at progression of a tech piece. Like some jealous kid who can't r3ally afford it.

I mean me personally am excited for advanced vr better resolution but most importantly no wires!!!!. Kinda torn whether to get the vice or wait for a possible "psvr 2"

jukins3032d ago

Wow let's just release the original and not improve on it. . . Read the article by no means will this replace the original but act as a premium model for people with the funds. It's been two years tons of advancements have been made. I'm willing to bet you don't even own vr but are willing to bash it's progression for those that are into it

I wouldn’t let the comments annoy & confuse you. This is N4G the corporate shill basement, where corporates pay their PR teams to bum rush social media. In order to make unconsumer practices acceptable in the genral public’s eyes.

Stupid I know, no matter which way you look at it.

ABBAJESUS3031d ago

So what? Pc monitor manufacturer s release new displays every year... It's not a console.

Psychotica3031d ago

Supposedly they will be offering an upgrade option for current owners.

great news! the reason i stopped playing the vive or psvr was the very poor graphics quality. i will be definitely getting this day 1.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing1d 1h ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster921d 2h ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit1d 2h ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing1d 1h ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9223h ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
