Linear Games Must Not Be Forgotten

How is it that linear game design still has a bad reputation? Despite all evidence to the contrary, all the linearly-designed classics celebrated by our community, the idea of linear progression is still somehow looked upon with more scorn than respect. This really shouldn’t be the case. While there might be inferior non-linear games in terms of the amount of player agency, linear games can still do many things that non-linear games cannot. While non-linear games must provide a consistent experience across the board in order to compensate for the player’s freedom, linear games are bound by no such restriction. Funneling players down predetermined paths allows for more creatively designed play spaces, more elaborate encounters, smoother difficulty curves and better told stories.

Thank goodness for upcoming games like Metro Exodus, God of War, A Way Out, Spider-man, Detroit Become Human, Days Gone, The Last of Us 2 etc etc. I hope I never see the day when gaming is reduced to annualised multiplayer shooters and open world games.Publishers are already trying to marry the two with games like The Division, Destiny, and the upcoming Anthem.

Long live the story driven single player experience.

A linear game doesn’t have to be story driven.

CorndogBurglar3061d ago

Wait.....Metro Exodus? Is this a new Metro 2033 game??? How have I not heard of this?

Must do research...

DrumBeat3061d ago

Oh it's gonna be gooooooood. Judging by that gameplay. Whew.

rainslacker3061d ago (Edited 3061d ago )

I'm more likely to remember a linear game than the typical uninteresting open world tripe that gets put out. Best non-linear games I actually do remember are the ones where there is a good structure to the openness, so the side stuff doesn't overly distract from the actual story.

I'll most certainliy remember an open world game long after I've forgotten about the flavor of the year MP offerings that come up, as those games are designed to be forgotten when the next one comes along, so people will move on.

NXFather3060d ago

Linear games are not bad as long as most of them are not extremly linear like the past God of War series to the point where it seems like a roller coaster. Long live single player games. I prefer them currently over multiplayer games.

Biishock was not a linear game ... you could back and do quests and hunt for upgrade at any point in time ...

DanteVFenris6663061d ago

Depends which game you played.

The original bio shock had the best design for that

zaherdab3061d ago (Edited 3061d ago )

Yep ... i agree that it was a single player and story centric game but gameplay wasnt linear at all ... but it was focused enough that the level design rivaled the design of linear games

kevnb3061d ago

I don’t feel like bioshock was story driven, it was gameplay first and the story second even if the story was good.

kevnb3061d ago (Edited 3061d ago )

I don’t know why people are disagreeing with me, the game told its story through gameplay and even let you ignore big chunks of it if you wanted. It’s similar to the half life games and system shock 2 where the developers were able to intertwine story into the gameplay without ever taking control from the player.

CorndogBurglar3061d ago

It depends.....

It was linear in a sense that you had to go a certain path to get to the end. Sure you could go back through areas at any time, but you still had a set path to go and things to accomplish before moving down that set path.

I certainly wouldn't call it an open world game either. It was more like a linear experience that you were in control of moving forward at your own pace.

captainexplosion3061d ago

I don't know why you are getting so many thumbs down. Bioshock wasn't very linear. You even had a map and often had to figure out where to go. I think the sequels were a bit more linear tho (although I do remember not knowing where to go once in Infinite and getting a little stuck).

Skankinruby3061d ago

Difference between linear and open world games? A whole lot less wasted time.

Damthatsword3061d ago

when done right, an open world game would be vastly superior to most single player games. its just a better genre, when done right.

a similar version of what i said in your logic would be: difference between linear and open world games? alot less creativity, talent and effort in general.

i find linear games to have more of a chance to become boring and dull. since it does take much less effort and thought put into it, and thats a fact actually.

dadavis19923061d ago

No, that is entirely your opinion and not “a fact”

ShwaaMan3061d ago (Edited 3061d ago )

I completely disagree, and clearly you missed the point of the article. Open world games can be great but run the same risk you’re talking about with boring, repetitive fetch quests as well. Not EVERY single game needs to be an unfocused sandbox to go and do whatever you want in. That, to me, is stale gameplay because so many franchises are adopting the style of a never complete, endless game.
The good ones are beyond fantastic, but for fucksake people STILL aren’t sick of Skyrim or GTA5 yet!
Bioshock or Metroid Prime(and many others) are two of the best games ever made that still can go toe-to-toe with just about anything today, and they are not open world at all. You have choices, you can backtrack, but when push comes to shove you must progress in a certain direction. They have ‘focus’, which so many games today do not.

Yui_Suzumiya3061d ago (Edited 3061d ago )

Quite the opposite. Open world games have a better chance of becoming dull and tedious. I can count on on my hands how many decent open world games have been made but it could take hours to list all the amazing linear games that have been made.

rainslacker3061d ago

A good game is a good game regardless of the structure of it's narrative or progression system. Anything "vastly superior" would be from the structure of the game play to encourage the player to move forward, whether in a linear path, or randomly around the world.

To give an example, despite some open world game being excellent, I can find the distraction of being able to go anywhere to actually hinder the story, thus bring the game down, if I'm looking for a story driven game. To me, that makes it inferior to a strong, narrative driven, linear game that is both well designed, and interesting enough to keep playing until the end.

NXFather3060d ago

I absolutely agree but, we may be a while off before someone really does it in an adequate way. I am not putting games like horizon, witcher, and botw down but, something that has more mass appeal. Maybe cyberpunk will do it or rockstar.

Father__Merrin3061d ago

At the rate in which we have been getting them, and the selections such as TLOU and Horizon and other similarly unnecessary remasters, no.

In terms of reintroducing classics and making them available again at a reasonable price where as previously they were locked behind ridiculously priced physical copies, yes.

Luc20596d ago

agree with the Horizon but TLOU - I've never played it and the remaster it's quite impressive graphically so for someone who never played the original game it's a treat to enjoy such quality!

There a plenty of gamers who switch platforms and so I guess the remasters are meant for those

jznrpg596d ago (Edited 596d ago )

There is a new crop of gamers every generation that didn’t play the originals and some of us older games want remasters of older games to play them on current hardware. Overall I say yes it is good. Nobody is forced to buy them.
They can also gauge interest for older IP with remasters and it could lead to a new game in the series. Remasters aren’t for everyone but no game is anyway

darthv72596d ago

Chances are their parents did... and may still have them. That's how I introduced my kids to gaming. They played what I had and worked their way up. They learn to appreciate them better that way.

andy85596d ago

I don't have an issue if they don't take away from developing new games. It's always nice to revisit a game you loved in the past with extra shine

gold_drake596d ago

remasters of older games absolutely.

but i dont see how a 4 year old game needs a ... Remaster. a upgrade update should do the trick

bjt i guess for newer players its a good option.
