I see this as purely a age and preference thing but for many, including myself, I can see where the author is coming from. I was young (31 now) and this was one of those sort of next-gen experiences at the time that really showed what was possible in games.
Attention to detail for a PS1 game was amazing as well.

But Metal Gear Solid is still a masterpiece.
Feel Half-Life did it better, had no cut-scenes and everything was told through Gordon's eyes. So many memories with that game.
