Alex S. from Link-Cable writes: "In a lot of ways, 2017 could be seen as a make or break year for the Sonic franchise. The year began with Sega announcing that they would put a new emphasis on quality across all of their major franchises and that not only would we be getting a new major Sonic game, but two (one 2D and one 3D) over the course of the year. And while gamers had been burned by the series before, the nostalgia and love for the series is almost second to none, so it wasn’t too surprising to see fans get excited for what was next for the series. So when Sonic Mania released this summer (to rave reviews) there were a lot of reasons to hope that the upcoming Sonic Forces would be just as good and maybe even turn the series’ 3D fortunes around. Sadly though, despite some good ideas it might just be one of the worst missteps the series has taken in recent years."

The divide between both iterations of Sonic is now reaching spin-off territory, and the way Sega is handling it is both a blessing and a curse.

Game Rant Writes "Sonic Forces is now five years old, and while it has plenty of flaws, there are things the 2017 release handles well enough to affect future games."

Sega aims to release 2D Sonic games alongside the 3D ones each year, but it's questionable how the company plans to continue this trend.
The game's not that great but not that terrible either. A 3.8 seems too low to me. Just my opinion, though.
