Is Xenoblade Chronicles 2 too ambitious for Switch's mobile mode?

Xenoblade pushes the Switch's mobile-based Tegra technology hard. It holds up nicely when playing docked, but is this game just too ambitious for portable play?

Even on the dock it looks like it was made in the 90's. Seriously Nintendo, make a real console.

Neonridr3094d ago

it's called art style. You can accept games like Persona or Gravity Rush but not this?

Lovable3094d ago

Kek comparing persona 5 to this garbage...

You should be thankful because of the +nintendo bonus on those scores..

Neonridr3094d ago (Edited 3094d ago )

@lovable - yeah, at least I own both a PS4 and a Switch.. so I can actually make valid comparisons. I love how so many people are down on the Switch but haven't touched one. It really shows through when people try to make these educated statements with zero knowledge to back it up. Try playing the game. Maybe then you will understand why it deserved the scores it got. I am merely saying that just because a game doesn't look like Horizon or Uncharted, doesn't mean that it's ugly or garbage. Gravity Rush is a beautiful game and is far from photorealistic.

maybelovehate3094d ago

Even the art style is inconsistent. There are characters in the game in 3d models where the rest have that cell shaded look. But I am not referring to the art style, I am referring to the actual graphics. They aren't crisp and it doesn't run well. Which is a shame because the game deserves better. You can tell it is being held back.

Neonridr3094d ago

@maybelovehate - Look at Project Octopath Traveler. Combination of pixel art and 3D backgrounds.

I will admit that the game suffers in handheld mode. But it's still a pretty engaging game and is far less barren and empty than XCX on the Wii U was.

TekoIie3094d ago (Edited 3094d ago )

@lovable

Sure it's just favouritism for Nintendo. Nothing Nintendi makes is actaully any good and they should got 3rd party so we can enjoy their overrated games your preferred system...

@Maybelovehate

Take out the "maybelove" in your name cuz at this point it's always hate.

meka26113094d ago

Hah @lovable, acting like persona games have ever had top notch graphics. The only JRPG's with best graphics are final fantasy games. Japanese RPG's always have some of the best gameplay, but bad graphics.

Lovable3094d ago

You can take the PS2 gen at best graphics game and leave it in Switch. Please do not bring this abomination in other consoles...

NewMonday3094d ago

only few PS4 JRPGs look better than Xenoblade 2, for the hardware the game looks great and the art design is beautiful. it looks as good or better than the big budget DQ12

Germaximus3094d ago

Both Persona 5 and Gravity Rush look a million times better than this game when it comes to visuals.

“Even on the dock it looks like it was made in the 90's”

lol....that is bullshit.

PhantomTommy3094d ago

LOL you're so right dude, I mean it looks EXACTLY like Quake and Half-Life.

UKRsoldja3094d ago (Edited 3094d ago )

368p. Omg. New record for the Switch..

theeze05043094d ago

@maybelovehate, jealous much? I bet you weren't even playing games in the 90's to even know what 90's games looked like.

N4g is infested with idiot PS fanboys who had no problem saying graphics aren't everything when people compared a high end PC to a ps4.

Somehow this doesn't apply with the switch. Cry some more will ya? enjoy shadow of the colossus and games that have been re-released twice already at full price.

Lovable3094d ago

Kek...so many flavors and you pick to be salty af...

theeze05043094d ago

this isn't salty buddy, it's the truth, people like to twist things when it suits them.

The xbox one x is another example of how it's powerful and can pull amazing visuals, but here on n4g, it's all about the games and quality of games, but since the ps4 is obviously more powerful than a switch, that logic no longer applies.

maybelovehate3094d ago

Uh, you see... I own a Switch, so why would I be jealous or hate. I am just telling it like it is. Switch is underpowered.

Lovable3094d ago

But Ps4 still has the most exclusive and has the largest library of games..Switch has nothing in PS4 when it comes to power and library....so yeah

Athos3094d ago

@ maybelovehate & lovable

The Switch is in its first year and doing very well on the library side. Yes PS4 has a ton of exclusives, so does the 3DS. Give it another year, this thing is going gangbusters on companies developing for it.

As far as it being under-powered, compared to what? My PC?, my Ps4? Of course it is, that's just stupid to expect otherwise. As far as tablets go it has plenty of power. Not only do they have to ensure it can take the heat build up, it has to be able to do it under marathon conditions. Considering its more powerful than PS3, Xbox or WiiU I am happy with how much power it demonstrates.

Of course I am in my 50's and been gaming since Atari 2600 and have built my own PC's for 20 years. But hey, what do I know...

NXFather3093d ago

That is true but, please don't confuse this xbox scum with us. Thanks in advance.

Oh look. Another fanboy who have a significant insecurity over thing he doesn’t own.

Maybelovehate and Lovable are seemingly just one person with two account.

prankster1013094d ago (Edited 3094d ago )

Exactly. £300 gets you THAT?

LMFAO!

pietro12123093d ago

It doesn't look that bad. I take this "fake" console that Nintendo made over the Xbox One and heck my Switch over my PS4 this year.

SR3883093d ago (Edited 3093d ago )

Aww poor you ... If it looks that bad don't play any indie games or touch any console game from 2006 or before you couldn't handle it lol

michellelynn09763091d ago

Stop trolling. It looks very good. That is the problem with games and gamers. An unhealthy obsession with resolution and frate rate , but not the games.

Big_Game_Hunters3094d ago (Edited 3094d ago )

I play it on dock mode just fine, but then again any console i play after PC gaming seshes i need to take a few minutes to adjust my eyes to the framerate first.

corroios3094d ago

Its just not fair. What does DF expect? The machine got 0.5 teraflops and its going for a massive open world and not cell shaded. There arent miracles....

Nyxus3094d ago

They're just giving the facts.

TheFirstClassic3094d ago

You wouldn't expect this big of a difference from portable mode and docked.

corroios3094d ago

Not realy the 1t teraflops is FP16... like the PRO is 8.4 on FP16, but the normal use is FP32, where it is 0.5.

That specs were thinking that the switch run like the Shield console, but its not the same.

Vits3094d ago (Edited 3094d ago )

It's actually somewhere close to 0.400 Docked and 0.160 Undocked. Look, the Tegra X1 when in stock form (1000 MHz) offers 0.512 teraflops, but the Switch runs on underclock (768 MHz Docked and 307.2 MHz Undocked) so it ends up delivering less.

Now where does the 1.0 teraflops come from? This value refers to when the Tegra X1 is performing calculations using half-precision floating-point format, however this format is not common in graphics applications such as games or engines because it is simply not reliable.

So in practice, this value is more for marketing purposes on the part of Nvidia than anything else. In addition AMD Jaguar is also able to perform tasks using this format, so even if it was usable we would have to double the "teraflops" of the other consoles, so comparatively the Switch's performance would remains the same.

UKRsoldja3094d ago (Edited 3094d ago )

Wrong, buddy. Switch is 0.4 teraflop. 3 times less than the original xbox one. Otherwise Doom wouldn't have to run at half the resolution and half the framerate on it versus the xbox one.. That's 4 times less pixels per second, and at lower settings!

Teflon023094d ago

So? That's a dumb defense. Did you see how much Vita got negativity for not performing as well as PS3 on games that PS3 had trouble running (borderlands, Modnation are prime examples). It's just DF doing what they do, give the technical facts. Atleast it seems reviews for the most part ignored it. Also, you choose what you make, if you make something that can barely run, that should be critiqued. The game runs fine, just not like expected, and I found it odd I wasn't seeing people show it off in portable mode like they usually do with every other game. I'm buying either way, but Portable mode not being the same as docked may through it off for me seeing I don't play docked at all

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 3094d ago
Summons753094d ago

It runs perfectly fine in mobile mode. Played the last 12 hours of the game in mobile mode and had no problems. Lasted a good 3.5 hours before needing a recharge which isn't bad. Looked great too.

Teflon023094d ago

maybe to you, but digital foundry is about the technical facts. Not opinion, unless they say otherwise. This is the info I need as I only use switch in portable mode

theeze05043094d ago

who cares about digital foundry... Let's compare a 1080 gtx to a ps4. People care way too much about graphics and not enough about the game itself, hence why the quality of games has dropped with lootboxes and all the crap following your so called amazing looking games.

Shiken3094d ago

I don't care what resolution it is on portable mode. It still looks great and runs well. It is still Xenoblade on the go. Why should I care about what DF says when in reality the game looks good regardless of the specs?

I play games, not resolutions.

Teflon023093d ago

Theeze I'm still getting the game. But just stop. The games graphics were praised before to see it flawed is something. Also no, I said nothing about graphics. Res isn't graphics, it's clarity. If it's going sub Hd that's bad for me. It bothered me seeing some games at sub native res. Atleast on tv's they usually don't get too noticeable unless you use a big tv. But it's obvious on Vita and was on Mario odyssey when it happened for me. I don't want to be surprised by the games technical issues. Frame rate issues are notable and so is clarity.

Jinger3094d ago

You're trippin, the game looks horrible in mobile mode and it has quite a few stutters...

Outlawzz3094d ago

I agree i have only played in handheld for my 8 hours so far and I have no problem with the looks, I expected a downgrade for such a massive game. I've noticed a couple stutters here and there but nothing big. Overall, very happy with the game so far. Some ppl are too focused on the numbers and comparisons to other games and really just can't get past it and enjoy the game which is sad honestly.

prankster1013094d ago (Edited 3094d ago )

Ha Ha!

People would say anything to justify paying £300 for a piece of rubbish console. And not have it look like they've got egg on their faces.

Tis like walking into McDonalds and paying the kind of money you have to pay for 5*.

Jinger3094d ago

Enjoying the game, but my goodness does it look bad in portable. It even have a dynamic resolution so when things get hectic it drops so low it looks like a 16bit game. Plus then there are times it still stutters.

Even when docked the game doesn't look fantastic. Still a pretty bad draw distance, textures look about as bad as the first game on Wii... at least it doesn't look blurry and doesn't drop res so much while docked.

For me, Xenoblade 2 and 3 and Final Fantasy 7 remake and rebirth are the best JRPGs or RPGs in general ever made. Yes, they even surpassed Expedition 33 in my honest opinion. Before, the Tales series was among my favorites, but I was very disappointed with their last game, Tales of Arise. Its world has become linear and not as expansive as their previous games. Fortunately, its battle gameplay is still very good. I hope that in the next Tales game, they will expand the game even more.

Hoping for a new Xenoblade game from Monolith Soft in this year's Nintendo General Direct. And it should be a Switch 2 exclusive.

Sircolby45112d ago

Yeah, Xenoblade 2 and 3 are amazing. I would have put Xenoblade 2 in first and 3 in second if I was ranking them.

Zeldafan64113d ago (Edited 113d ago )

The "worst" Xenoblade game is still better than 95% of games out there. Xenoblade 2 is my favorite rpg ever. All the Xenoblade games have incredible characters, soundtracks, voice acting, stories, world design and combat (save for Xenoblade 1 whose combat, while good, is not incredible).

What makes it even sadder is that if you jailbreak your Switch 1, it actually runs those games better than the Switch 2. Since you can, on the fly, change the rendering resolution and overclock the device to handle it.

I’m currently playing Xenoblade X like that and it’s great, no FPS drops, and even in handheld mode, the game looks very clear. Though, I have to say, I’m still a bit divided on whether I like or dislike the changes they made from the Wii U version. On one hand, everything looks cleaner and the models feel more alive, but on the other hand, it looks less unique.

Zeldafan64183d ago (Edited 183d ago )

Saying X looks less unique is not something I ever expected to read. I think the character models look quite a bit better in the Switch version (not that I thought they looked bad in the Wii U version). The world and monster design are some of the best I've ever seen in video games though I'll still give a slight edge to Xenoblade 2's world design. Leftherian Archipelago is my favorite location in any video game from a visual standpoint followed closely by endgame of Xenoblade 1.

Vits182d ago

If you think the Switch version models look unique, I have dozens of anime titles to sell to you.

Zeldafan64180d ago

I was talking about the world and monster design being unique, not the character models. Guess I should have made that clearer.

They should update these games for the switch 2 hardware, might as well as we wait for the next new xenoblade game.

repsahj272d ago

I hope this is a free update for switch 2. Specially XCX.

jznrpg272d ago

2 was the game I liked the least but it was still pretty good

Zeldafan64271d ago

2 is my favorite in the series even though it's the one I have the most issues with.

Duke19272d ago (Edited 272d ago )

So outside of a side by side comparison you would never notice a difference between the original title and the remaster?

It’s depressing how many people want to keep buying the SAME GAME on a new platform.

Zeldafan64271d ago

The Xenoblade games deserve way higher sales numbers than they get.
