4 Important Things PlayStation Could Learn from Xbox

Sony has a pretty good thing going with PlayStation, but it could always learn a few things from the competition.

100% agree with those points

ninsigma3094d ago

I see game pass and PSNow as different because PS now is (or was) meant to be able to play anywhere on any device because it's streaming. Ofnthe two though I would prefer the Xbox game pass implementation over ps now so in that sense I agree there.

4k blu ray support will likely come with PS5. It is odd it's not there but honestly I can't see 4k blu ray adoption being great. Even blu ray struggled. So for the sake of keeping costs down I guess I can see why they didn't put it in the pro. You don't really hear many people screaming for it so I'm guessing they madebthe right choice. As someone who is now going to buy a dedicated 4k blu ray player, I don't really feel out out by it.

Proper BC. it's a nice feature and kudos to MS for their awesome support on it. At this late stage though I don't really see it as very important. However if ps5 doesn't offer BC for PS4 then yeah I'll be there with everyone else asking why.

Integration with cable. Not important what so ever.

kevnb3094d ago

i see psnow as something I simply dont want.

ninsigma3094d ago

Probably wouldn't use it either but I don't get to choose due to not being available here.

rainslacker3093d ago

I wouldn't mind it if I just didn't already have a bunch of games I already own and haven't gotten to play yet. I had the free month trial, and it was nice to play some games on the Vita and PS4.

The sub price isn't bad, but ultimately, I just see no reason to pay since I don't have enough time to play that many games.

1. GamePass: PSNow could be improved to allow you to download the games to your PS4 for better performance and less network lag, but I don't think the PS4 could run the PS3 natively or else BC would be there, which I'll bring up later.

2. 4K Blu Ray: I could care less, just like tens of millions of current PS4 owners. It's a feature that can come in a future revision of the PS4 slim or even PS5, but it doesn't make or break a console. Basic Blu Ray didn't set the world on fire nearly as much as DVD did, and ended up doing just okay, so 4K Blu Ray must have reached a significantly smaller market.

3. Proper BC: I agree with this one. The problem is the PS3's CPU is practically as powerful as the current-gen CPUs, and harder to code. There shouldn't be an issue with the PS1 and PS2, but the reality is those games don't hold up quite as well hence why a complete remaster is needed in many cases to bring those games up to current-gen or at least last-gen standards. However, since the PS5 can access Ryzen CPUs which should offer PS4 architectural compatibility, and the power needed to push through PS3 emulation, I expect the full PS library to be running on the PS5 even if it comes in waves. PS4 should be there by Day 1, and PS3 can come Year 1, PS2 and PS1 can come eventually but a good portion of those games should be remastered.

4. Cable TV Integration: I don't care. I bought a console to play games not watch TV, and top of which TV subscriptions are down by over 1 million each quarter, and with streaming services like Sling TV, PS Vue, and DTV Now there's less of a reason to be stuck with an overpriced cable provider. If anything add a dual HDMI port, and allow the HDD to function as a DVR.

kevnb3094d ago (Edited 3094d ago )

sony already has ps3 games running on their emulator, you just have to buy them again. "Remaster" is just a gimmick marketing term for higher render resolution for the most part, very rarely do they actually change a single asset. Im glad microsoft is allowing older games to run at higher resolution, it really exposes other publishers for what they are charging us for and helps the uninformed understand the results of a higher render resolution with no other changes.

rainslacker3093d ago (Edited 3093d ago )

Did you mean PS2 games are running on the emulator? As in the PS2 classics?

To my knowledge, there is no PS3 game running through an emulator on PS4....at least not officially from Sony or released through them. The only PS3 emulator I'm aware of is for PC.

Also, remasters...by which I assume you mean remaster released like TLOU:DC or UC:NDC.... are not run through emulators. They are games that are rebuilt within a compiler(game engine) to run on the specific hardware. They do not emulate code, they rewrite the code at compile time to actually be the proper machine code that the PS4 can interpret into something to output.

There is a huge difference between emulating code, and building code to a specific set of hardware.

Emulation will take a set of COMPILED CODE for a specific set of hardware, and translate that code to run on a different set of hardware that can't handle the native instructions. It will then take that output, and create a discernible result.

Rebuilding involves taking original SOURCE CODE, and then taking that source code and writing the specific machine code necessary to run a a specific set of hardware. There is no translation necessary at run time.

Emulation is a run time function, while building code is a compile time function. Completely different principals.

What you're suggesting, if I understand you correctly, is that all those cross gen games or multi-plats are simply running through an emulator on a system that it wasn't specifically written to. The fact that these things are offering up a higher resolution, or better textures, is evidence enough that they aren't simply emulated versions of the game. I mean, are most games actually just running PC emulators to run on console? Absolutely not, as specific assembly instructions are usually used in console development, and when going from one system to another, it's often necessary to rewrite some specific assembly functions to get them to work properly.

i dont use blu-rays that much any more, but ya back yards is nice, and i believe for ps5 we will have this....but of course there is a lot of improvements to be done by sony....but in the end i want games...that is for me the main thing for me to get a console....

One thing Xbox can learn from PS; make some damn games. All this is nonsense. This is why Xbox is in the position it is in. Before release all they talked about was kincect and cable tv smh. Console is super trash. Nintendo is about to outsell the xbox which is far less powerful. It's all about games. As soon as MS figures that out, they will be better.

fiveby93094d ago

MS spent money on timed exclusivity deals. What a waste of money. They would have been better served investing in their studios. They should let their studios take more risks and be more creative.

yomfweeee3094d ago

1) Can't disagree here really.
2) Sony knows as well as anyone that physical movie sales are on the decline and digital is the future. They made a decision based on their metrics to not include that to keep the price reasonable. They learned that the wrong price will hurt.
3) Xbox clearly has better BC, but I wouldn't call it proper. It is limited to the games they've picked (and the publishers agree to allow) to support.
4) Please Sony, don't waste time on integrating TV guides.

ninsigma3094d ago

Yeah and Sony are part of the consortium for blu ray, so it would actually be in their interest to put it in but even then they decided not to. Shows how small a market it is.

TankCrossing3094d ago

UHD Blu-ray definitely has a small market, but it happens to have a clear overlap with the small market that would be interested in the upgraded consoles (ie people that care about image quality).

It is strange that Sony didn't include it, but meh.... that horse has been beaten enough already.

kevnb3094d ago

physical movie sales are pretty much dead already, especially blu ray or uhd blu ray. Those that havent moved on to streaming are more likely to get a plain old dvd.

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose22d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE22d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername21d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy22d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde22d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8622d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8622d ago (Edited 22d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300022d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle22d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments
