There's certainly something in Sonic Forces for fans of the franchise and there are some steps in the right direction. However, the story, world, and characters never come together into a cohesive whole.

The divide between both iterations of Sonic is now reaching spin-off territory, and the way Sega is handling it is both a blessing and a curse.

Game Rant Writes "Sonic Forces is now five years old, and while it has plenty of flaws, there are things the 2017 release handles well enough to affect future games."

Sega aims to release 2D Sonic games alongside the 3D ones each year, but it's questionable how the company plans to continue this trend.
Basically, agree. It shows a ton of promise if they decide to make Adventure 3 or Generations 2 in the future- they definitely haven't lost it. But the game overall plays out like a sidegame that's meant to be played for a level and return to later, not something that you'll invest hours into at once. It didn't feel complete, and the lack of additional playable characters, a plot that only gets decent at the end, and too-easy difficulty for most of the game are a bummer.
I was kind of prepared that it might not be the best when it came with the $39.99 price tag and assumed they'd made it into a less complete title. Hoping nex-gen they take our feedback into consideration and bring back Adventure tbh.
