Is EA Buying Titanfall Developer Respawn Really A Bad Thing?

With EA buying developer Respawn, the studio responsible for Titanfall as worrying as it looks, as well as the past closures at EA, is this a good or a bad thing? It's less cut and dry as you might think.

Time will tell, but I am going with a glass half full outlook. EA has so many assets for the types of games Respawn makes, the Frostbite Engine in particular should be interesting in the hands of Respawns developers. They also have a lot of assets for Star Wars that hopefully can be used to make their upcoming Star Wars game even better.

UCForce3107d ago

Really, Frostbite Engine ? I prefer devs use their own engine than popular one. Never trust EA, because EA have a vicious cycle that killed great developers under their rule.

maybelovehate3107d ago

What developers use their own engine today? Respawn used Source Engine for Titanfall 1 and 2. It was a modified version but still Source. And that is like a 20 year old engine haha. Frostbite is such an awesome engine.

RegorL3107d ago

Frostbite _is_ EAs own engine... there are no other developers that uses it
(well there is one game series from another publisher that feels a lot like a Frostbite game...)

A small developer would waste most of their resources to develop a engine on their own.
(the game I thinking about was developed by a small studio in just two years, not enough to create a game engine with the feature set it has...)

andrewsquall3107d ago

@maybelovehate "What developers use their own engine today? "
Insomniac Games, Guerilla Games, Santa Monica Studio, Team ICO/Sony Japan, Sucker Punch, Nintendo, Media Molecule, Remedy, Naughty Dog, Rockstar Games, Quantic Dream, Ubisoft with Snowdrop or Anvil depending on the series, Ready at Dawn and Clap Hanz and that is off the top of my head.

I could give you a better list if I actually had to think about it. I have not touched a single EA game this gen so I am missing out on all these essential Frostbite engine games I guess. Incidentally I was playing Army of Two III there the other day in co-op with a cousin for the craic and the female in that game, Fiona, looks practically like the same character model used for the main character in Star Wars Battlefront II lol.

I am SO glad that of the games I buy from the developers above, they do not use the Frostbite engine and for an obvious reason I just stated. They all just start to look so samey.

RegorL,

Frostbite is not EA's engine. They didn't make it. It was Dice's engine before being acquired by EA. Because that's what EA does like with Criterion and Renderware. They buy developers to kill competition or to acquire their assets for their own needs.

Respsawn's days are numbered. First they'll get a name change. Then eventually, programmers will be shifted around to make EA's games and not their own before being folded when a new game engine or developer is interesting to EA.

It's the same cycle over and over.

Talking up EA's resources as a positive for the acquisition.. I remember hearing that from the head of Mythic Entertainment, guess where he and Mythic are now?

Frostbite engine in the hands of Respawn though, that does sound very exciting.

maybelovehate3107d ago

I have to be honest, I never played a single game that Mythic made, so I won't comment on that studio.

fenome3107d ago (Edited 3107d ago )

Yes only time will tell but judging EA by their track record they aren't going to allow them the creative freedom they deserve. I highly doubt they bought the studio so much as they bought the Titanfall IP to take advantage of, exploit, and milk until it's dead and dry. Time will tell...

Dante1013107d ago

visceral games, BioWare, and pandemic they were good before ea decided to put their evil claws into their games I expect microtransactions titanfall 3

maybelovehate3107d ago

Bioware is still awesome. I don't get the hate. Dragon Age Inquisition is one of my all time favorite games. And Anthem looks epic. Also enjoyed Mass Effect Andromeda, didn't really get the hate. At least not as far as the single player game was concerned.

UCForce3107d ago (Edited 3107d ago )

Bioware isn't there anymore. The hate come from people who don't like EA control them. When the time come, EA isn't going treat Respawn fairly. EA shut down Visceral Game because EA think SP games aren't worth it. I did played MEA and it isn't bad game, but failed commercially and expectations from critics and consumers. EA didn't allow Bioware Montreal to support the game by give us SP DLC and fixed the game bugs. Instead, they just completely closed Bioware Montreal. At E3, EA didn't give us an update about MEA. What EA want is profit, but they go down even deeper.

Thunder_G0d_Bane3106d ago (Edited 3106d ago )

Dude Bioware have been on a massive decline since the doctors left.

Dragon age 2 was horribly bad. Inquisition was better but still no where near the levels of dragon age origins.

Andromeda is horrific never thought I’d see mass effect get turned into shit. But here we are. The protagonist Ryder is some frat boy with white privilege an dialogue between characters is cringeeeee.

Anthem is a tech demo an wants to be destiny I certainly wouldn’t pin any hope in that game being good.

jeremyj29133107d ago

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't EA the recipient of worst company in the US years in a row?

Spenok3107d ago

2 years in a row, from consumer votes, back in 2012 and 2013.

The article actually covers that.

Heli893107d ago

They beat out banks and folks who were actually screwing people over...because a bunch of fans were butthurt about the ending of Mass Effect 3 and about the failings of That Sim City game, I suspect.

Funny how no one talks about an online popularity poll outside of the time it was convenient that EA won it...

jeremyj29133107d ago

Oh ok. Thanx for the info. Didn't feel like reading through the article. Lol

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio15d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing15d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9215d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit15d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing15d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9215d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
