Ofcourse they aren't dead. But people like phil spencer and the xbone execs wish it was dead so they can go full attack on microtransactions and gaas. Thank the stars for Sony and Ninty.

fenome3129d ago

Same with the big 3 publishers, EA, Activision, Ubisoft. They're all pushing "GaaS" online only so they can continuously try to nickel and dime you for every game you play, it's like they formed a coup and are all working together to try and turn this industry in this direction. It started off slow, but now they're trying to strong-arm and shoehorn this into all of their games.

They try to say games aren't as profitable as they used to be, but that's BS, they just spend ridiculous budgets on marketing now and they're still making billions of dollars every year.

@Woolly

I'm too old to hop on bandwagons, but I've also been gaming long enough to see where this shit is headed, so drop it with that.

I'm not calling anyone evil, end of the day all these companies want you money, it's big business. There are also different ways to go about it without being so openly greedy, it is what it is.

I'll choose for myself who I support, you do the same for you. I'm not pushing agendas, I just don't like where all this is headed. Call me old fashioned or whatever, it is what it is.

The only game I bought out of any you mentioned was Crash and that was just out of nastalgia. I don't play Assassin's Creed, COD or Battlefield either, so you're barking up the wrong tree with all that. I'm not loosing any sleep over, I still find plenty of games that I enjoy :)

@Woolly

Hey man, no worries, I respect everyone's opinions. I wasn't taking offense or trying to be gruff with you, sometimes when I write I tend to come across more direct than I intend (translates to I unintentionally sound like a dick). Lmao

Discussions are appreciated, happy gaming :)

On a side note, Wolfenstein does look tits even though I'm not that into shooters.

ShadowWolf7123129d ago

@Woolly_
And Ubisoft found a way to stuff Microtransactions into this Single Player game again.

The industry is becoming so obsessed with these things that they're going to try to shoehorn them into everything.

I think the big three do have a few standout MP titles, but they still produce SP content. They don't promote it as much...which may be one reason they don't see the same sales as MP games, but as it stands, those stand out titles return so much that it gives them more incentive to try and find more GaaS experiences that can rake in more rather than investing into more SP type experiences.

In any case, this same discussion was had last generation when things like COD became insanely popular. The whole MP was taking over isn't a new concept. While there are certainly more MP options nowadays, it hasn't diminished the output of SP titles. Some publishers may focus more on MP now, but that doesn't mean the industry across the board is doing so. However, every publisher is trying to find a way to capitalize on the GaaS model.

Man that's a bold statement to make at this site considering its predominantly xbox fanboys here. I'll just say good luck to you.

guyman3129d ago

OffRoadKing3128d ago

@Woolly

You only laugh because your one of those very xbox fanboys I'm speaking about, thanks for proving my point.

Right...of course...nothing to do with EA, Activision or Ubisoft.

Tell me which gaas or heavy MT game has MS released?

rainslacker3129d ago

Their next two big games to release are both GaaS type games. CD3 and SoT. Forza has some GaaS type stuff(MT lootboxes). Both GeOW and Halo have heavy MP empahasis, which is fine in those cases since they also offer up the SP...although I will admit I'm not familiar of them having any kind of MT type stuff in them.

Bobafret3129d ago (Edited 3129d ago )

Microsoft baaaaad. Sony/Ninty gooood. Do you ever tire of repeating the same rhetoric adnauseam?

trooper_3128d ago

Not reading between the lines, as usual.

TheEroica3129d ago

It's becoming a growing practice for Sony and Nintendo too... Though they're much more grounded than Microsoft seems to be.

rainslacker3129d ago

They more so just want those XBL subs. Whether a GaaS game does well or not, they still always have that if people play it on their system. If they could monetize Windows like that, they'd do so, but since that attempt failed, they have to try and go the Google, Apple, and Steam route of trying to be a storefront provider, which is why Windows 10 was free for many, and they came up with UWP.

Really? Phil and the Xbox ...I mean Xbone execs wish this? I really wish someone would provide some links where Phil and co wished these single player games were dead.

You finish Witcher 2 for PS3 yet? I mean Castlevania Lords of Shadows...sorry I always get those confused.

I think Sony and Nintendo prove single player isn't dead.

Dishonored Death of the Outsider, Wolfenstein 2 The New Colossus, Assassin's Creed Origins, Zelda, Mario Odyssey, Persona 5, Tales of Berseria, Crash Bandicoot NSane Trilogy, Yooka Laylee, Hell Blade, Uncharted The Lost Legacy, Nier Automata, Ni-Oh, etc. Especially this year there's a ton of amazing single player games.

CorndogBurglar3129d ago

DEEEEAAAAAAAAD! ITS ALL DEAD!

Those games don't count, apparently.

Relientk773129d ago

Horizon Zero Dawn as well

Thought that was in my list, apparently not

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio22d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing22d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9222d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit22d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing22d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9222d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
