Microsoft CEO: PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS To Run on Microsoft Azure

PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS, the hit game of 2017, will be running on Microsoft’s Azure Cloud Computing Platform.

I guess it's the same with the first Titanfall that's using Azure servers. Microsoft probably finally made a deal with PUBG developers by offering them free Azure servers in exchange of making the game lifetime console exclusive

freshslicepizza3137d ago

I imagine Sony is not going to want to have in on Azure servers if they want to get this game. Plus it will be crossplay with PC and Xbox One, what's Sony going to say about that?

Kribwalker3137d ago

i have a feeling that will be part of the deal if pubg goes to ps4. cross console play

ApocalypseShadow3137d ago (Edited 3137d ago )

What should Sony say? It's Microsoft's way of trying to lock up the game as an exclusive on Xbox one by using their servers. The game was already working **without** Microsoft Azure servers on PC.

Or a way to try and get Sony to pay to use Microsoft Azure servers if the game goes multiplatform. Of course Microsoft would welcome more Azure payments. Which is also a way to try and increase new Microsoft accounts like Minecraft was going to do as a cross platform title.

Anyone can read what's going on here. But Microsoft and Phil don't want to do third party exclusives supposedly.
https://www.cinemablend.com...
Instead, they offer the "cloud carrot" to 3rd parties to put their games on Azure. So that it becomes exclusive(in a round about way), or Microsoft gets paid. It's a win win for Microsoft.

freshslicepizza3137d ago

@Apocalypse Shadow
"It's a win win for Microsoft."

It's a win win for gamers since it's running on stable servers. Titanfall ran incredibly well on Azure, so tell me again the downfall here of using Azure servers?

morganfell3135d ago (Edited 3135d ago )

@Apocalypse,

"What should Sony say?"

Nothing. The popularity of this game on Xone is not going to be what it was on PC. The transference of player counts isn't going to happen the way some people think. I expect several Xbox gamers to buy it because it is a game Sony currently does not have but it isn't going to swamp gaming and be a savior. They can bring PUBG to the the Xbox and Sony will just drop a PS4 exclusive in front of everyone. And another. And another. That's the real question. What is MS going to do about the continually expanding gap between the X1 and the PS4 and the Sony true exclusive games library? This game will not put a dent in it. The X1X isn't going to stop it and if Sony price drops it will only get uglier. The need top do something is really on MS. And in the future Sony is the one with the next gen hardware refresh coming first.

letsa_go3135d ago

You can't stop thinking about what sony is going to do, can't you? It must be a sad life to be so obsessed over a business! No one even mentioned sony, and the article didn't either...but yet here you are, riding their jock as usual. haha

andrewsquall3135d ago

Sony doesn't need Azure to do a basic last gen PSN thing like OVER 100 players online. Its starting to look like Xbox Live does though.

subtenko3135d ago

that is a sneaky thing....

ziggurcat3135d ago (Edited 3135d ago )

@krib: it's not if, krib... the game is coming to PS4.

@moldy: I imagine servers used on a competing console will be different, just like any other multiplatform game, moldy. I also imagine Sony will say no, like they have in the past, likely due to MS wanting Sony to use MS's servers, and force PS owners to create XBL accounts just like they did to Switch owners wanting to do Minecraft crossplay.

zb1ftw7773135d ago

Nothing Sony can say.

They are out the loop and if they want to join the action they will have to pay MS the priveledge of using Azure.

Altovoltage3135d ago

They’re not going to say anything players have fornite and it’s turning out to be better than pubg. I’m glad I have both consoles and I can enjoy them both

DarkZane3135d ago

It's not gonna be cross play between PC and Xbox One because the Xbox One version will be lagging behind in term of content and updates.

Goldby3135d ago

I'm playing hitman on my ps4.

That answers your stupid question

thekhurg3135d ago

Sony is going to say play Fortnite the game rapidly gaining popularity on pubg.

babadivad3135d ago

Sony probably already uses Azure in some capacity or another. There's only a couple of companies who have the kind of cloud storage and servers Microsoft has. I don't think they would turn down this game just because it's on Azure. Titanfall 2 is on Playstation. That uses Azure.

Goldby3134d ago

@babadivad

Hitman uses it which is also on PS$ and Crackle uses it, which is owned by sony pictures

You missed the part of the article where Hitman is also running on Azure. Just because a game used MS's cloud, doesn't necessarily mean it's an exclusive. Wait for an actual announcement before getting excited/disappointed.

ziggurcat3135d ago

@sonic - PUBG isn't a "lifetime console exclusive"... it was announced as a timed exclusive, and the publisher is in the process of bringing this to PS4. MS is only just trying to extend the length of time it's a timed exclusive.

Yohshida3135d ago

Aaaaand its lifetime console exclusive. Great deal getting the biggest ever steam game on your console.

SilverDemon3135d ago

Dude. Its already running without MS server. Why can't it run on normal servers on ps4?(y'know, like how it's running on pc now)

Those servers will be Exclusives to xbox (and maybe on pc if the game came to Windows store)

81BX3135d ago

Yes it is. Now you have to ask your self why would they make that deal?

Gazondaily3135d ago

Yeah it doesn't need azure so there's no reason why this wouldn't come out on PS4

3135d ago
SilverDemon3135d ago

Yes. To make a better experience for xbox one and windows10 users

(I have a feeling that those servers will be Exclusive for xbox one and Windows store version of PUBG. Specially since MS won't make ANY money from the sales on steam)

itsmebryan3135d ago

Because that's what the devs wanted to do. What's your point?

Razzer3135d ago (Edited 3135d ago )

“biggest ever steam game on your console“

lol...best ever? Come on. The steam ratings of the game are mixed at best. 57% favorable.

http://store.steampowered.c...

And if it were lifetime console exclusive, why reiterate exclusive “at launch”?

“As one example, PUBG Corp., with the hit game PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS, is not only partnering to make Xbox the exclusive console at launch but is also running on Azure.”

Stop making shit up.

Yohshida3135d ago

PUBG just hit that Yesterday and will hit a new high the coming week aswell. The reviews are from people who got into server problems and gave it a bad one, nothing to celebrate from your side. The servers are now better and the people playing shows everyone how good the game is.

Sure, keep hoping its coming to PS4

Razzer3135d ago (Edited 3135d ago )

“Biggest” != Best

I don’t care if it comes to PS4 or not. I would play it on PC if I wanted to

Yohshida3135d ago

No not biggest = best
But most daily players that are coming back every day to the game just shows you its the best. No other game has anything close to it.
Sure you would, need a pc first eh?

3135d ago
subtenko3135d ago

yea he didnt read the reviews lol, he just on the hype train xD

also, fornite getting better everyday ;P the devs want more exposure for PUBG....

Earlier this year Chang Han Kim - executive producer of Battlegrounds - attempted to clear up the confusion surrounding a possible PS4 release.

"We definitely do have plans and thoughts about other platforms," Kim explained.

It seems like we could see crossplay between Xbox, ps4 and PC for first time. With Batlegrounds MS can make it happen.

Goldby3135d ago

I would prefer to play games where you don't have 3rd party programs in the background allowing things like aim bots and speed hacks.

Take-Two CEO Once Again Side Steps Grand Theft Auto 6 Price Point

Strauss Zelnick says price of GTA 6 is being carefully considered and that Rockstar is focused on "making the most spectacular piece of entertainment on Earth."

Kuma31d ago

If GTA 6 abandons everything that made GTA 5 great, it will crash and burn right out of the gate. GTA 5 was funny and not at all PC. My worry is that they will cave to the PC crowd and ruin the vibes.

Eonjay31d ago

They got freaking BBLs twerking on the top of trucks for the gram, the freaking Flordia joker, and dude running down the stree in their undies and you are worried about it being 'too PC'? The internet has runied gamers. It doesn't matter how non-PC they make the game, you will all listen to the grifters telling you not to believe your lying eyes lol.

gigoran831d ago

"Rockstar Games’ co-founder and former VP of Development Jamie King said he envisions GTA 6 as a game that’s “maybe not quite as edgy or quite as funny” as its satirical predecessors."

oh yeah, totally internet grifters spreading rumors...

blacktiger31d ago

That's part of the plan, they destroyed you but they need to destroy the shareholders? Only 1 shre holder is the true elite that don't care

1nsomniac31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

Meh.., if it’s above £55 I ain’t buying it.

Rockstar are genuinely not half the company they used to be. I was a die hard GTA fan I’ve purchased every game and expansion and spin off day 1.

My opinion of GTA6 is that I can take it or leave it. Not bothered. They burnt too many bridges.

DaReapa31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

So they're actually leaving the door open for an L.A. Noire sequel? Nice!

VaNdAl31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

He should just come out and say it already it's getting stupid it's going to be a 100 bucks $200 for the special edition🤡🤡; 29315;🤣♿

Storm2331d ago

I won't be getting this game until I can get it for $70. SHoot, I could wait for it to be even lower. I don't need the game that badly as my backlog is still huge and I am enjoying playing other things.

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay32d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn233d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn232d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown33d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay32d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay32d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac32d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger33d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300033d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde33d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde32d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
