Panic Button Dev: "I’m Bummed” Some Gamers Focus On Resolution/FPS

Doom Switch runs at 30 FPS, and the Development Director over at the game's porting team feels bummed some players are focusing on that. Is he right?

Its all about how the game feels at certain fps. I want to try Doom on Switch. Resolution is a beast that won't go away because money is being spent. We gamers spend a good chunk of change on gaming and the industry is booming because of it. Everyone kind of has a right to their opinions on this topic. I personally will put a game down if it isn't fun. Whether its 4K or 480i CRT. Lol

The guy is being a hypocrite:

http://wccftech.com/doom-de...

"We want players to wonder how DOOM and idTech 6 games can be so visually stunning at 60 frames-per-second at 1080p on all platforms, when other titles cannot even achieve a similar look at 30 frames-per-second. Our goal is to be the best-looking game at 1080p at 60fps."

Theknightofnights3051d ago (Edited 3051d ago )

How is he being a hypocrite when he isn't the one who said what you quoted?

Billy Khan is the one who said that quote, but this article is about Adam Creighton. Heck, they aren't even the same company, one is idSoftware and the other is Panic Button.

The 10th Rider3051d ago

Yeah, it's weird he centered on FPS and resolution.

IMO it's FPS and resolution that are important and it's *other* visuals that are less important. I'd take a 60fps 1080p game over a 900p 30fps game that has better graphics any day. Sadly a lot of developers focus on the graphics over frame-rate and resolution because that's what looks better in a still or while watching a 30fps or compressed video.

Goldby3050d ago

But would you take a 60 fps game at 900p over a 1080p game running at 30fps?

Neonridr3050d ago

@Goldby - probably. 60fps is definitely more noticeable than the extra 180p.

Shiken3050d ago

FPS are fine as long a it is a solid 30. 60 is always best though.

Resolution is overrated however. I woukd take a game at 900p with better graphical effects over a game set at 1080p with less. By your logic, Call of Duty at 1080p 60 looks better and is preferable to Uncharted 4 at 30.

Resolution will always be the weakest link, the general public are just too simple minded to realize that fact.

The 10th Rider3050d ago (Edited 3050d ago )

@Goldby,

Yeah, I definitely would. 720p 60fps vs 1080p 30fps would be a tougher choice. But 900p isn't too bad.

@Shiken,

Meh. 720p is still pretty noticeable. 900p is pretty good. 1080p is ideal. 4K for a home console doesn't seem necessary to me at this point as that extra power could easily be used elsewhere. It does make a huge difference on PC where you're sitting a few feet from the screen though.

I hate when developers aren't honest and just trying to pleased a certain group just to sell their game.

wonderfulmonkeyman3052d ago

You're only saying he's dishonest because you're a tech maniac with an anti-Nintendo penchant.

He's not wrong to be bummed about it; putting down so many games because the graphics don't hit high-horse-rider standards is really shallow and stupid, and denies a lot of games the chance they deserve to be played and loved for what they are.

Doom might feel better in 60fps, granted, but it won't be a killing issue for it unless someone is just so obsessed over graphics and frames that they can't play on anything below PS4 in raw power.

Princess_Pilfer3051d ago

You don't get to tell people what is an is not a "killing issue" or otherwise a valid experience or why it is that way. I play games on systems *well* below the PS4 in raw power. That also run at 60 FPS because the developer knew the limitations of the hardware and didn't push graphics/resolution too high to maintain it.

Style *IS* substance. What a game looks like is a big part of the game. The Last of Us fundamentally does not work if it's not on a machine modern/powerful enough to handle those facial expressions, or is at a resolution too low to see them properly, or is visibly stutting all the time and pulling the player out of the story with a technical issue.

You can't (reasonably) just dismiss that as "tech maniacs" and "people obsessed with graphics." Higher resolution and higher framerates provide an objectively superior experience. You ever seen a flip book? That's what I see at 30fps. Like, litteraly, a frame by frame slideshow that's too stuttery to provide the illusion of motion. Maybe you don'\t see it, maybe you don't care, but I cannot focus on a game when it feels like I'm watching a flip book, and you don't get to tell me my experience is invalid.

freshslicepizza3051d ago (Edited 3051d ago )

Might feel better? C'mon, don't be like that. It is better, you know it and I know it. Even Nintendo knows it which is why they are one of the few still thinks that's impoirtant in games like Mario.

Nintendo's bread and butter will remain its own games and exclusives because multiplats are most often inferior compared to other platforms. So it then becomes a balance between if the portability is more important when choosing. You certainly are not going to be favoring Switch (multiplat) games other than for its portability.

gbsrnctaln3051d ago

Games like Doom are different though. 60fps is a BIG part of what gives the game its feel, and its feel is a BIG part of what makes it so good.

Liqu1d3051d ago

"Doom might feel better in 60fps"

Not might, it does. Everything plays better at a higher framerate.

porkChop3052d ago

For the most part I would agree. But when it comes to id's games, 60fps is really important. One of the biggest draws of any id game is how it feels to play, and 60fps is a big part of that. I get why they cut it to 30fps, but I wish there was at least a patch to add a 60fps option.

PhantomTommy3051d ago

If you watch any developer interviews about new DOOM, they always bring up just how important 60fps is to the experience. Carmack's Doom 4 was targeting 30fps on console, but Id were adamant that the reboot HAD to run at 60fps. That's why it's a shame to see the framerate halved on Switch, not because 30fps games are bad or unplayable, but because it's clearly not how the developers wanted people to experience the game.

gamerz3051d ago

It really paid off too. DOOM is so buttery smooth it actually makes just moving around a delight in itself.

GamingCentaur3051d ago

Switch can’t handle it. You should play it on PS4 or PC if you want the proper DOOM experience.

porkChop3051d ago

I have it on PC. But the Switch can handle it. They kept the visuals pretty close to PS4 though. I would rather worse visuals for 60fps.

TardcoreGamer3051d ago

Well it is the newest and also the worst version of Doom. Doom is a fast paced FPS by design. Sorry about the Switch not being able to realize its vision.

DrJones3051d ago

I was surprised the game could even run on the Switch, when I heard about it I assumed it had to be 30 fps to work

datriax3051d ago

It will be a crippled down version to accommodate the power of a wrist watch. Still screens and promo footage is not indicative of anything, especially these days.

This game is going to be trash, even by mobile standards.

Prince_TFK3051d ago

What mobile that have power comparable to the Switch (except Google Pixel C for obvious reason) ?

Why GOG Invests in Old Games - and Why Players Keep Coming Back

For nearly two decades, GOG has built its identity around DRM-free releases and classic games that actually work on modern PCs. With initiatives like the GOG Preservation Program and One-Click Mods, the platform is going far beyond simply selling old titles — it’s actively maintaining them, fixing them, and making sure they don’t quietly disappear as technology moves on.

All I want is a physical disc release of remastered D2 that doesn't require online check-ins.

I've lost complete interest. Too much FOMO with seasons as it is, now it's expansions? No thanks.

Michiel19892h ago

what fomo? everything gets reset each season and you start new characters unless you're playing on the regular servers and then you're already maxxed anway and just need to participate in the new season stuff.
