Is VR Making Progress Towards Becoming Mainstream?

Virtual Reality, or VR, technology has been one of the hottest topics in gaming for nearly two years now. We’ve come close to this point in the past with motion controls and 3D televisions, but now that VR has finally evolved and is available for consumers nearly everywhere, is VR making a positive push towards the mainstream market?

No, and I hope to God it stays that way until dive pod technology is figured out.

oh look, its the most Anti Ps4 personality on N4G

wonderfulmonkeyman3142d ago (Edited 3142d ago )

I find it funny you'd call me a luddite when I specifically stated that I'm waiting for Dive Pods to be a thing before I give VR my approval.
Seems more like you'd be the Luddite here, since you'd be the one to hold back tech by over-emphasizing how good current-day VR is, to the point that companies see that enthusiasm and decide to hold off on progressive research for the sake of making more excessive profits off of the current solution.

Also, @Sky
I'm not anti-PS4.
The only thing I truly hate about Sony is their cancerous cess pit of a fanbase.
Other than that, I'm perfectly fine with Sony, and I DO want a PS4 for specific games like Kingdom Hearts and the upcoming Mana remake.

What a coincidence Nintendo has nothing to offer in this regard.

Oh yeah, but HD Rumble is a real game changer /s

wonderfulmonkeyman3142d ago (Edited 3142d ago )

I'd reject it even if they did, because I don't like the current form of VR.
And no, HD Rumble is not a game changer.
A nice advancement, but not something I'd write home about.

So yeah, take your snark and shove it.

For somebody that is always advocating something different in gaming and applauding going against the grain like with the Wii U and the Wii, I find it quite ironic in questionable that you would actually be against VR.

Maybe you'll change your tune when Nintendo does it =)

I understand that we all disagree from time to time but one of the things that I've never been able to understand with you is your lack of Integrity, you literally seem to only base your opinions based on a specific company, even if they start to contradict each other.

So you're always for something different but suddenly you're not?

I believe Nintendo is going to go with virtual reality as an option in the future simply because it makes more sense to do it then not to. I believe the sliding function of the controllers was likely created for a VR concept ie a headset created to where you slide the switch on to the headset similar to what you see with Samsung.

With PlayStation VR selling Millions it's very clear that there is a demographic for this and with the games that are released successfully , it's clear that it is not simply a theory or concept but something that's executable.

A larger format in regards to CDs were questionable to Nintendo but that's why they lost that generation.

They ended up catching up to the idea years later.

The idea of motion in regards to gaming might have been questionable to Nintendo during the PlayStation 2 generation with the eyetoy.

But clearly they caught up years later with the Wii.

So is this going to be another thing that they pretend is not that big of a deal until they start to copy it?

I mean is this going to be a thing that you pretend isn't a big deal until Nintendo says it is for you?

As always other companies are looking towards the future while Nintendo is still trying to figure out the past...

Mr_Writer853142d ago

Nintendo did do VR... It was an abortion of an attempt.

@wonderful tech moves on, I suggest you do the same.

wonderfulmonkeyman3142d ago (Edited 3142d ago )

Wow, getting pissy and making this about companies instead of the tech.
Look, kiddo, I have no issue with Sony, apart from its fanbase and a couple of recent decisions.

I'm not against VR because Nintendo's not doing it or because Sony's doing it, so take that childish console war bullshit and shove it back down your throat where it belongs.
Just like paywalling online multiplayer, I'm not going to APPROVE of something like VR just because one of my favorite game makers does it.
I won't pay for online multiplayer, and I won't pay for VR, regardless of who makes it.

I'll leave being a corporate suck-up who buys it because of the name attached to you, who is always coming into Nintendo-related articles to bash literally EVERYTHING they do, whether it's bad or not, but has a mile-long list of why the PSVita wasn't a failure that he'll preach to anyone stupid enough to ask.

I'm against VR because I've tried it, in all of its current forms, and was left painfully unimpressed.

Don't go getting whiny with me just because you WERE easily impressed by a bunch of first person camera helmets.

@ Mr-Writer
That's what I'm doing; I'm waiting for tech to move on. DIVE PODS. Or did you not read that bit?

Mr_Writer853142d ago

"Just like paywalling online multiplayer"

You do know Nintendo will be charging for online next year?

https://www.google.co.uk/am...

But yeah let's pretend Nintendo won't be doing this....

No, it needs to be much cheaper and have more uses beyond very specific programs and a few gaming "experiences" before that, and maybe not even then.

freshslicepizza3142d ago

They are trying to get the cost down, both Vive and Oculus dropped but Sony is reluctant to since they want to remain profitable. Once they hit $199 it will be a lot easier to justify for a lot of people but it's one of those things you have to try before you become a believer.

Until we see the big studios make VR games it will remain a niche product. I am not talking about just adding VR to existing games but full blown games made for VR.

Atticus_finch3142d ago

Come on Moldy, are you even trying. PSVR is the cheapest already and the best selling. It's called demand and supply.

HeyNowChillax3142d ago

When it's wireless and $200 bucks, sure.

TardcoreGamer3142d ago

With the mixed reality headsets coming soon. yes. They are more accessible to the mainstream consumer with Xbox1x support easier to setup and cost less than Vive and Rift. I own a Vive and love it but I know it has a big barrier to entry.
