How The Switch Could Bring Back Local Multiplayer In A Big Way

It's like the thing was designed for couch gaming.

Local multiplayer never left in the first place

porkChop3167d ago

It's been on the backburner since the PS2 days. Online became the focus instead, so most games dropped local MP completely.

When I have friends over we're always playing local MP games on my Switch. It's a much bigger focus on the Switch, which I appreciate.

Venom, no one ever said it's been 100% gone. But is hasn't had much focus during the past 2 generations, and most MP and co-op games haven't supported local play. On Switch it's very different, local co-op and MP has been getting a lot of focus.

And I didn't realize that stating the truth is considered "bickering". Interesting.

FallenAngel19843167d ago

That doesn't mean you can't find local multiplayer in various games across various platforms

wonderfulmonkeyman3167d ago

That doesn't mean you'll find those same games emphasising it as much as their online.

FallenAngel19843166d ago

When the feature is present and accounted for, why would you care if it's emphasized in marketing? Is that going to stop you from enjoying using the feature?

wonderfulmonkeyman3166d ago

Marketing emphasis plays a bigger role in consumer decisions than I think you're giving it credit for, dude.

FallenAngel19843165d ago

If local multiplayer is in a game then the consumer would know and experience it regardless. It's not like you can hide such a feature

I still find plenty of contemporary games that offer local multiplayer on a lot of modern platforms.

NS can't bring back what never left.

wonderfulmonkeyman3167d ago (Edited 3167d ago )

Offer it? Sure. Emphasis it? Almost never.
It would be one strange sight to see people suddenly bringing out their PS4's, PC's, and XB's along with TV's to coffee shops and friend's houses on a common basis.
Switch can do that without the need of carrying a TV.
That's what it means by bringing it back; it makes it simpler than it was back in the old days, not to mention these days, to play anywhere in person with buddies.

Especially now that portable docks are becoming a thing. Just one HDMI cable, and if your buddy has a spare TV, you don't need to split screens as much.
Though I think most would just use the systems' screen and be content with that too, since it's sizable.

@Knush

Read: "Almost never."

Do you know what the word "Almost" means, or must I explain?

PhoenixUp3167d ago

Why does it need to emphasize a feature that's already present? If the mode is there and works well who really cares at that point?

Why would people bring their consoles together when the point here is local multiplayer? All you'd need is multiple controllers. That's never disappeared.

If you want to talk about not needing a tv then you're specifically talking about handheld gaming, and 3DS & Vita still offer plenty of local multiplayer games.

Erik73573166d ago (Edited 3166d ago )

That's not the point , switch focuses more on local mp. This article isn't saying pa4 doesn't have it but it is saying they stopped focusing on it and Nintendo is bringing it back to populairty and making it more seamless to do like being the only console to ship with two controllers

PhoenixUp3166d ago

Yet there are still plenty of games on the other platforms that promote local multiplayer. Just because online gaming has risen to prominence doesn't mean local multiplayer fell to the wayside by consumers and developers.

If games feature local multiplayer then it is a focus on that individual game's part. You don't just haphazardly put the feature into a game.

Splatoon 2 doesn't focus on local MP....

If nintendo uses that arcade service to release 3RD party arcade classics, it would help too.. It would be so cool to have the 6 player xmen game as well as many others.. The joy cons would work fine too.. Plus you can take it with you anywhere

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle31d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
