Digital Foundry: Hands-on with Switch's 'impossible' Doom port

DF: "Judged on its own terms, Doom on Switch could be a winner based on our gameplay tests so far - but our hands-on was entirely handheld-based. On the one hand, we expect more consistent performance and improved resolution when docked, but on the other, playing on the big screen may highlight the cutbacks more. We'll just have to see. However, the basic idea of bringing Doom - and indeed Wolfenstein 2 - to Switch is just so ambitious, we have to applaud the developers for the effort. Hopefully the final code will deliver."

lol, Doom on PC tested at Switch specs that haven't been revealed yet. Seems like a legit video.

Prince_TFK3157d ago

This is a video of Doom running on Switch, from Gamespot:

ScreenCritics3158d ago

This might actually be the height of silliness.

Pricey3158d ago

Given how weak the switch is it’s amazing this runs. Great game, great engine.

jonivtec3158d ago

Nintendo should find a way to leave the 4 cpu core to devlopper....not just 3.Im sure a future firmware update will allow that.

PlayableGamez-3158d ago

It's impossible. You need one CPU to do background process and the OS.

gbsrnctaln3158d ago

Part of what makes Doom 2016 "Doom 2016" is the 60fps. Without it, it just pales in comparison. Portability does NOT make up for inferior ports for ME, so Ill get a switch for Mario, Metroid, Zelda etc...just like the last 2 Ninty consoles.

wonderfulmonkeyman3158d ago

There was a racing game recently on PS4/PC/XB that ran at 30 fps, and no one called THAT slow.

People are over-dramatizing the 30FPS of the Switch version of DOOM: I can guarantee you that once the action kicks up, it's not going to feel slow or any less exciting.
30 fps won't ruin the game.

gbsrnctaln3158d ago

There are certain games where 60fps makes a big difference. Doom and Titanfall 2 are 2 examples.

PlayableGamez-3158d ago

30fps ruins DOOM.
That game was built with 60fps in mind. Because it's a fast paced shooter that requires fluid framerate.

_-EDMIX-_3158d ago

Well that's because that racing game was probably locked at 30 frames and that was also probably because that racing game was made to 100% push the performance of that system, where this game is clearly visually downgraded along with missing graphical features and even missing modes on top of worst performance.

There's a big difference between Grand Theft Auto V running 720p and 30 frames on PlayStation 3 and 360 because the engine is so demanding that is expected for such a generation-defining game especially when it's pushing the boundaries of what those systems could do.

But this is not saying this is a revolutionary game pushing the boundaries of the entire generation this is literally like saying you're trying to run Grand Theft Auto San Andreas at 540 p at below 30 frames...

So Doom is not running those settings because it's the most advanced game of the generation it's the worst version running those settings because the system is too weak there is a huge difference between that distinction

I mean a lot of us already know that the Last of Us 2 is probably going to be 1080P or even 900p 30 frames but that's okay with a lot of us because it's pushing the boundaries of everything technical for a game for this generation, the same thing for Grand Theft Auto 6 I think we're all completely fine knowing it's probably going to be 1080p 30 frames simply because it is probably going to be extremely demanding and pushing all the boundaries of what the systems could do.

I'm sorry but that excuse does not lend to a game releasing with such downgraded features compared to other systems that exist.

When something like Grand Theft Auto 6 or The Last of Us 2 does this is because it is the most demanding and there is no other game probably within this generation that will be as demanding to push such features in those genres, Doom is doing this on a system because the system is too weak.

But clearly Doom exist on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One Running 1080p 60 frames pretty damn easily.

The only way anybody would be getting Grand Theft Auto 6 with The Last of Us 2 running 1080p 60 frames or 4K or anything like that is if they're running it on the pro or the X

But something like that is tolerated because it's actually pushing the boundaries of those systems

This is simply just a downgrade there is no benefit to this 😂😂😂

NXFather3157d ago

You know you lying. Switch is great though. Should be a good game even so.

Most AAA game on console run @ 30 fps and nobody complain. Why would they if they can bring te game everywhere they want!Just my 2 cents.

_-EDMIX-_3157d ago

Well that's probably because those games actually release with all their modes intact also running in higher Fidelity more graphical features actual textures real tessellation and on more demanding settings overall.

I mean this game is running 540p for god sakes.

_-EDMIX-_3158d ago

Absolutely agreed. 540 p is just completely ridiculous, that's not even last Generation standards. But the biggest problem I have is clearly with performance the fact that you have frame rate dipping below 30 frames is just terrible and not the way I believe this game should be played.

This literally just sounds like a cash grab by Bethesda, I read They're not even doing the damn game they outsourced it to another team smh. When I buy a switch I see me just buying it for key Nintendo exclusives I don't see me really wasting time with something like Doom only the play the absolute worst version and terrible performance along with missing features.

I have no clue why I would spend more money to buy another system to get the worst version of a game.

Weeblordbad3157d ago

It's a console the size of a small tablet, it's a version of Doom on a tiny console, it's a portable version of Doom. Actually step back, and think about what this is and what it isn't. It's not Doom running on a PS4, Xbox One or PC, it's Doom running on a device with a mobile form factor. With caveats for sure, but it's doing something that we haven't really had until now; A device that's mobile enough to act in the same way as a Vita or 3DS, but can at least run a modern engine and do it comparitively well. You have to keep in mind it's a mobile device, it comes with all the negative of the form factor with the net benefit of it being a MOBILE device. We've already seen Ubisoft get Snowdrop running with Mario+Rabbids, who knows what people will be able to squeeze out of the device in the future?

Remember it's Doom that you can play on the go, that should be applauded.

_-EDMIX-_3157d ago

@wee-I know what exactly it is it doesn't actually mean that the quality is of the standard that many gamers come to expect

I mean while you're at it you might as well marvel at Bioshock running on an iPhone and Android...

Trust me that novelty runs out pretty damn quickly that's like saying you're running an N64 game on a calculator that might be interesting, but that doesn't necessarily mean somebody is going to be having a quality experience with missing features and low frame rates and an absolutely ridiculous resolution.

So yes it's definitely not Doom that's running on PlayStation 4 ,Xbox One and PC, clearly.

Sirk7x3157d ago

Dude, this is a very modern game running on ARM architecture. The Switch weighs 10 ounces and draws very little power. Yes, it's obviously downgraded, but when seen in action mobile on a 6 inch screen, this should be considered a marvel. People shouldn't look at what it is not, but more of what it is, proof that a very small handheld can push graphics significantly ahead of the 360 and ps3. It makes a world of difference when you're holding the thing in your hands and playing it.

Weeblordbad3157d ago

Bioshock on an iPhone was impressive, its lack of dedicated sticks and buttons was what kept me from paying it any attention beyond the technical side of things. No one was expecting this to run at 1080p, no one expected 60fps, you have to look at what the device is and isn't.

If snap map, Dooms MP and 60fps are key components to Doom for you then move on. Just keep in mind this is full ID Tech 6 not a cut down version of it running on the switch. Regardless of ANYTHING that's impressive, regardless of N64 emulators or iPhone ports. Don't tell people what they should and shouldn't find acceptable, you'll sound like less of a brat.

gbsrnctaln3156d ago

Here's the problem though weeblord, and it's one that has been completely swept under the rug lately. This is supposed to be a HOME CONSOLE as well, and it's priced as such. Nintendo has even stated that it is primarily a home console first lol! Had nintendo made the switch their next portable while developing a true dedicated home console that could actually handle these 3rd party games on par with even the base ps4, all would be peachy.

As it stands it is a CRAP home console. There is a large percentage of folks in the gaming community like myself who have zero need, interest, want or even ability to play games on the go. Its why I haven't owned a handheld since the DS.

So yippy I can play downgraded Doom in its 540p 30fps glory on the shitter...while all games in docked mode are gimped versions of what they should be. Now I WILL buy a switch for Mario/Metroid/Zelda, but fack buying the 3rd party big hitters on it.

_-EDMIX-_3156d ago (Edited 3156d ago )

@Weeb-buddy I don't really care how interesting Bioshock is on a cell phone it looks like complete crap compared to the PC PlayStation 3 and 360 version. At the end of the day I believe that wow factor wears off pretty quickly simply because people play games for fun and the lack of quality is not to the standard that is going to make sense to most Gamers so the notion of being able to play on the go it's going to wear off rather quickly no different than gaming laptops that might be interesting to be able to whip out a laptop anywhere and start playing a game but it's not going to be more interesting than the software itself.

What gaming laptops most people find that not being able to change remove an upgrade the hardware definitely takes the excitement out of the mobility so in my opinion being mobile doesn't essentially determine the entire purpose of the existence of someone buying something like this ie being portable being more important than gaming itself

The game must come first and if the game is going to be suffering, I had these absolutely abysmal resolutions and almost unplayable frame rates for today's standards along with missing features I actually believe that interesting idea of playing on the go is going to be quickly diminished especially since this is not the first time in gaming such a thing has happened.

Playing something like Doom or Skyrim on the go is not really that much different than the PSP being able to play Resident Evil 2 or Metal Gear Solid or Final Fantasy 9 etc

The interesting Factor starts to wear while rather quickly simply because it is still a game system made to play games, not meeting the standards of today will definitely affect the games because what you were trying to argue is that someone playing on the go is more important than all of the quality and features there are actually even playing the game for which begs the question why do they care about playing something on the go if it also means having possibly the worst experience feasible for the game?

I mean name-calling is not really going to solve your problem regarding this.

I would say this is an interesting as Grand Theft Auto playing on the iPhone.

Playing Grand Theft Auto San Andreas portable e is not somehow going to supplement Grand Theft Auto V.

Sooo it might be interesting in terms of a novelty, but I find a hard time believing that being portable is more interesting than every feature in a game in terms of performance, quality and features.

If that was the case PS Vita should have been out selling every single system imaginable that's like trying to say being able to play Uncharted on a portable is more important than every feature known inside of Uncharted on consoles 😂😂😂 28514;

_-EDMIX-_3156d ago

@GBS- exactly. It is Nintendo themselves so that kept trying to Market this as a Home console so I don't know why suddenly we want to ignore the standards of quality for Home console and use it being a portable as this cop out. Like you I intend to still purchase a Nintendo switch but only for specific titles that are actually made for this system I see no value in me buying games that will be the worst versions if I already own a gaming PC and a PlayStation 4.

It does nothing to me as a consumer to be playing a game with missing features and the worst performance. If I want to play something on the go with performance issues and restrictions I might as well just use Remote Play on the PlayStation Vita.

Because I'm pretty sure I did not see this same audience going nuts and ranting and raving about remote play on how revolutionary was to play Uncharted 4 on the toilet....

Trust me folks as with the PSP in the PS Vita that wears off pretty damn quickly.

I mean that's like saying somebody could get Skyrim up and running on a toaster like somebody has actually done before that doesn't make me want to run out to buy a damn toaster to play Skyrim you guys are more interested in the novelty of doing this then you actually even are the overall quality or even features of the game itself.

To me that does not sound like a realistic or healthy market.

Ask the PSP.

If you're gonna troll, at least make a legitimate attempt.

Levii_92371d ago

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

LG_Fox_Brazil371d ago

That's a pretty fucking great list

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.

After watching Scavengers Reign? The answer is unequivocally yes. I really want something out of left field but I think people are too afraid to shake things up.

It's what I love about Shadowrun and Black Mirror. Love, Death, and Robots proved that there's an audience for stuff that doesn't fit the mold.

Gamingsince1981459d ago

Weird games in general we don't get enough of, we need more games like Katamari and Mr domino, things like that
