How Switch is Fixing Nintendo's Third-Party Problem

The biggest reveal of Nintendo's Direct is a sign to third parties they have a home on Switch.

PhoenixUp3184d ago

2017 has been a reversal of fortunes of a sort. In the same year that Microsoft's first party support began drastically faltering, Nintendo's third party support began drastically improving.

Moonman3183d ago

On third party support increasing: It's surreal but awesome at the same time. Nintendo fans buy games. Let me rephrase that: Nintendo fans buy quality games (ported or exclusive)....whether by Nintendo or third party. Despite many thinking all Nintendo fans are younger, Nintendo fans are indeed mostly grown with money or families. If Grand Theft Auto came to Switch ported right, it would sell millions. Probably sell like a first party game or better. My hats off to Bethesda. Bethesda seems to be to Switch what Capcom was to the GameCube. Capcom set the GameCube on fire. I miss the old Capcom. Sigh.

Eonjay3183d ago

"If Grand Theft Auto 5 came to Switch it would sell millions"
Yes, yes it would. Finally a statement that no one can deny. It just seems too smart for them not to do it. Rockstar I mean because its almost a freebie half billion dollar check... just sitting right there.

mcstorm3183d ago

Your spot on. Yes Nintendo 3rd party support was there for the wiiu at the start but the would be big sellers in cod, nfs, fifa to name a few were bad ports of the PS3 and 360 versions with things missing and Nfs was the best console looking games of them all but was out 6 months after the PS3 and 360 versions and was still charged at full price.

For me if a 3rd 2nd or 1st party game is done well no matter the console it will sell well.

_-EDMIX-_3183d ago

Lol if less than five major AAA 3rd party games coming to the system is a drastic improvement this company needs lots of help.

A lot of this is actually not a drastic improvement it's actually more or less what you seem to see from third parties in the beginning of Nintendo Generations. Rockstar released some games for the Wii when it first released.

100 million units later did you see Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption make their way to that system?

So are you guys sure you're seeing a reversal or you're seeing more or less the same behavior? I would assume a drastic reversal would actually be all the major games releasing this fall coming to this platform.

Smokingunz3183d ago

What an idiot u are smh it is a drastic improvement because it's a start, soon you'll see other big third party games on there. If u build it thru will come

Moonman3183d ago (Edited 3183d ago )

Grand Theft Auto made it's way to the DS so it has more to do with Rockstar's prerogative than Nintendo's. There is already a lot of Switch games to buy this holiday. You can't fix this third party issue overnight, so stop trying to jump the gun. If you can't understand why this article was made then wow. I'll be supporting L.A. Noire in the meantime...it's a start like Smokingunz said!

The 10th Rider3183d ago

NBA2K18, FIFA 18, Wolfenstien 2, Doom, Dragon Quest XI. That right there is five modern AAA 3rd party games. Obviously they still have a ways to go, but "less than five major AAA 3rd party games" isn't accurate.

_-EDMIX-_3183d ago

This is pretty sad if this is a drastic improvement to you guys.

Smh

This company needs lots of work if that's the case.

Kosic3183d ago

I agree. It's a handful of support. It's a nice start but it could just be an Ea tactic. Send over a couple of games if they don't sell well. No longer support the system.

All Bethesda games haven't even released yet, so there's no telling if they make or break their budgets. Which then would show the future off 3rd party.

Soulst0rmer3183d ago

Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars as one of the best GTA games ever made. But it is definitely awesome on the DS as opposed to the PSP version which look nicer but wasn't as cool without all the cool touch features.

I think Nintendo is doing really awesome job by getting the third party support they are but because the system has to have more work I think they need to work hard on getting the Developers two release the games on switch the same time as Xbox and PS4 instead of delays like the new Wolfenstein. what Nintendo could really do is invest in a company like blue point that can Port their games over

I enjoyed the last 2 weeks that Edmix didn't post in, it was like a holiday. But now he's back infecting every topic with his bullshit. It was nice while it lasted though.

@ Moon

I doubt those kind of games would sell as well on NS as Nintendo first party titles do since the majority of that audience is still on PlayStation and Xbox, but it's indeed an improvement.

Also the Capcom 5 on GameCube pretty much fell apart. Idk why you'd want Bethesda to do the same thing on NS.

@ Ed

This is an improvement compared to Nintendoprevious efforts. Obviously it's not the best third party support, but it is better than Nintendo's third party support in previous years. Even you can't deny that.

Moonman3183d ago (Edited 3183d ago )

Something like L.A. Noire comes out the same day as PS4 (which I own as well). I feel like it's going to sell a lot this holiday on Switch. Look at the NPD Top 10.....look at all the Switch games still selling since earlier this year. What's going on this generation isn't like previous Nintendo generations. It's enough gamers out here for third party to succeed on Switch. A good number of Switch owners already own a PS4 or Xbox. They seem to spreading the love between both according to NPD.

Those Capcom games are all classic though. That is what I mean. Resident Evil 4? Mind blowing when it launched on GameCube.

_-EDMIX-_3183d ago (Edited 3183d ago )

I'm pretty positive I could still question this support because this is still similar to what we've seen from previous years.

A few current generation downgrades and then a company moves on , did we not see Assassin's Creed on Wii U or Mass Effect or Call of Duty games on the Wii?

Manhunt 2?

I'm simply trying to let people know that is this really better or is this simply more of what we've seen from previous years? I would say the only way we can really know this is an actual real Improvement is if this actually continues for years.

Because people were making the same stupid articles when Mass Effect 3 assassin's creed Call of Duty Watch Dogs Deus Ex and a whole bunch of other titles were on Wii U.

I cannot deny that there is a perception of more support, but what I'm seeing here is a lot of the same stuff we've seen from years previously what you have to actually do is minus what they're no longer getting Assassin's Creed Mass Effect and Call of Duty Deus Ex Watch Dogs are not wasting their times this generation with this platform, so simply adding in Doom Wolfenstein or LA Noire or Skyrim doesn't ignore the other Publishers that pulled support in regards to AAA properties.

Simply replaces them.

Especially when your factoring in two of the games I mentioned to you are simply The Last Generation versions. Game sales will determine the support. For an absolute measurable fact the vast majority of people who own Nintendo systems are mainly buying Nintendo published games so third-party will have an uphill battle.

@moon-100 million people own the wii ,is there a reason why GTA or red dead and multiple series did not make their way to that system? It has nothing to do with having a lot of Gamers it has everything to do with having a lot of Gamers that actually buy third party games.

I mean for god sakes did you not even realize what you said? Oh good numbers of Switch owners owning PlayStation 4 and Xbox One only further show Market does not actually exist for this system to significantly sell third-party games of consumers have already made the choice that they must own another platform.

So whenever I hear someone saying that they also own a PC or a PlayStation 4 or an Xbox One, all they're doing is actually corroborating and supporting that it is not even feasible to own this damn system by itself.

I own a PlayStation 4 and a gaming PC but trust me a Switch is optional my PlayStation 4 or PC is not! And clearly anyone on here saying they also own multiple platforms along with the switch only confirm that owning this platform by itself is not even an option even for the most die-hard

Now dear God does that sound like a platform that screams third-party support must be here in terms of AAA games? Lol

By the way those Capcom games were amazing like Resident Evil 4 don't get me wrong but being amazing doesn't pay the bills , that's exactly why I released on PlayStation 2. I would even argue that was probably why Clover even shut down because of that extremely terrible deal. Great games , simply bad business.

Are there such things as second party games?

indyman77773183d ago

Yeah for example Nintendo used to own RARE, they was a Nintendo second party example. Then Nintendo sold them to Microsoft and they became a Microsoft second party developer. They just had to own a controlling amount of the company.

by being easy to develop for

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3183d ago (Edited 3183d ago )

That not the only thing a system needs. It need to have full support for Unity, Vulkan, Unreal Engine 4 and all the game, sound, graphic and publishers specific engines.
It was a good thing Nintendo sorted out getting the engines developers that were using for the Switch from the start. Ubisoft getting their SnowDrop Engine ready for Mario + Rabbids and Unreal Engine 4 being easy to use for developers.

Switch sales also help since it motivated developers to not slack off.

wonderfulmonkeyman3184d ago (Edited 3184d ago )

Indies have definitely picked up the slack that the AAA's left behind, but even some of the AAA's are now putting at least a token effort in, whereas before they entirely ignored Nintendo.
These are positive signs, even if the games are only ports that hecklers and trolls downplay as "not the same game" due to small differences. [goalpost movers can't admit they were wrong about Doom never coming to a Nintendo console.]

indyman77773183d ago (Edited 3183d ago )

LOMAO You noticed that too huh? They was making all kind of dogmatic statements like
"SWITCH cant even run DOOM at 720p" WRONG. Not a single one of them is a man or woman. Cant admit any of their douchbag repeat opinions that they was spoon feed off of some fantoy forum.

Moonman3183d ago

And I think many developers are enjoying their Switch consoles and want their games on the platform so they can play them. :)

C_Ali883183d ago

Holiday is going to be insane!!!

Sgt_Slaughter3183d ago

2018 should be even better for it, this is exactly what I was hoping for the Wii U early on.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle36d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
