@Septic The only thing breath of the wild smashes is it's in game weapons, Odyssey, Splatoon 2, Mario + Rabbids, and Xenoblade 2 is what makes the Switch shine this year, not the worst, most overhyped/overrated console Zelda to date.

I would agree, if it weren't for the fact that Zelda still has some DLC content coming that will add to the main storyline.
I'll keep my piece on this one until I know how that turns out, but I'm still hyped to death for Xenoblade 2.
Many sleepless nights ahead. My wish list for Switch is over 60 games long, and still growing.
Too many games, not enough cash...

Sony has the most potential out of the big 3.
Nintendo is on a good track (third party is starting to look a lot better on the Switch), but they still have ways to go. (The Nintendo Switch online infrastructure desperately needs an overhaul).
The PS4 has provided amazing experiences this year and there is still a lot to go.
Not trying to downplay the Switch, but realistically, the PS4 is still the console that has the most potential.
As far as Xbox, MS has made some good decisions this year, but the lack of marketing and first party content has put them in an underwhelming position.
So realistically I rank them like this Sony > Nintendo > MS.

It's great to see that Nintendo finally has strong 3rd party support again, like the article says, but let's not act like the rest of 2017 just didn't happen. The first 3 months of this year alone had an abundance of great games. It's rare enough that we get so many games that early in the year, but the quality too is something that has to be recognized.

Far from it ...

Potential for what? Sales? If so, Sony is still going to win there unless Nintendo manages to make enough to satisfy demand, and then it'll still be close.

On the software front, I'd say that both are great, so it's kind of subjective on which is better. Personally, If one were to own one or the other, they'll be good for the year. If they own both, then no worries.

I mean you're congratulating a company simply on getting some of the titles their competition has had for years. So I don't really know how anyone can congratulate and someone for getting Skyrim LA Noire or Doom if you consider those games can be found elsewhere, but ignore the systems that are consistently getting the top games day 1? So you just ignored Destiny 2 Battlefront Call of Duty Far Cry Assassin's Creed Origins etc

But let me guess if one of those titles comes to the switch it's now the greatest year and beats all the competition? Ummmm ok you cannot have it both ways ,you cannot ignore what's coming to PC PlayStation and Xbox only to start jumping for joy and tears because a 6 year game is finally coming to your system. I honest to God don't understand how Doom Skyrim in LA Noire also coming to the system somehow made it beat the systems that have already received these games 😂😂😂

Those games are not even on the radar of the major systems this fall I'm sorry but LA Noire is not going to somehow outsell the top 15 major properties releasing this fall that is extremely unlikely.

I mean consider this is not even getting the exact version of those games it's getting a Last Generation versions of them 😂😂😂

I would like to support you. But when you have Zelda + Mario (mainline) + Xenoblade coming out the same year, there isn't much to support. Nintendo pretty much single handedly owned the year without any significant 3rd party support. And there is no denying that. I will eventually get a Switch down the line, but just hope that Sony is noticing.

You've listed some great games (some are even amazing), but Sony had a pretty big hand from third party developers and you really can't deny that. Six games on that list are verifiable as first-party, so 50%. Still, six games in a year is not at all bad. It's great, though I believe you two are arguing two different points.

To be clear, Persona 5 is my game of the generation and I spent far more time with Gravity Rush 2 than I thought possible. I still play both games almost religiously...but neither are what you would exactly call system sellers in the traditional sense. If we scale both of your arguments, Nintendo and Sony end up being fairly even this year in terms of first party support. Both consoles have two first party games people would rush out for (Horizon and Gran Turismo; Zelda and Mario). You also have the other first party games that are arguably great, but are acquired tastes (Gravity Rush 2; Xenoblade 2). Likewise, if you're counting remakes for Sony (WipeOut Omega Collection; Crash isn't first party anymore so you can't really count that), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe counts.

The original argument was first party from shuvam09. Your reply goes into third party territory. Under very controlled circumstances, Nintendo arguably wins first party offering.

If you factor in third party however, Sony wins. Hands down.

Noting down some exclusives won't prove anything when going up against three of the best that Nintendo has to offer. Look, I am a huge Sony fan and am currently satisfied with my PS4. But comparing both the consoles by their initial year, Nintendo has surely got their sh*t right this time around. And given how unique the console is, it really stands out from the consoles and PC. They've got me wanting a console that I was as sceptical about as you are now. I am no Nintendo fanboy. I am just giving credit where it's due. It's not like all the consoles cannot co-exist. Competition is the only source of inspiration.

It kinda is. We already know what to expect from everyone.

Sony really brought the games in the first half of 2017 and Nintendo's really bringing it in the second half. I have very serious doubts that Horizon's Frozen Wilds will disappoint, just as I seriously doubt Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade will (Fire Emblem Warriors may be an acquired taste, though I believe I'll enjoy it since I enjoyed Hyrule Warriors).

Side thoughts: For me, longevity is also a factor.Every one of the aforementioned Nintendo game is a sizable time commitment if you're a completionist. On PlayStation, I've spent 125+ hours on Gravity Rush 2, 400+ hours on Persona 5, and 100+ hours on NieR: Automata. I still play those games. I imagine it'll be similarly time consuming for Xenoblade and FE Warriors at the very least. Mario will be busy work too, but not as much, I imagine. Breath of the Wild has me at 150+ hours.

Overall, I REALLY enjoyed my time with the PS4 this year and I've enjoyed some time with the Switch. I don't know if I would say Nintendo "won" 2017, but they're definitely going to be very competitive this year. If we're talking about first party games, I'd grudgingly give it to Nintendo because I love GR2 that much and. Third party, Sony. Any combination, it's a toss up.

I disagree. You mention that YOU might like The Lost Legacy more than Uncharted 4. The quality may be comparable, but the general consensus is Uncharted 4 itself is better. I'm sure The Frozen Wilds will not disappoint, but I wouldn't just hand Sony the year either. We really don't know how amazing Mario Odyssey or Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will be. Using your logic of comparably amazing experiences, Xenoblade Chronicles was a phenomenal game (92 average on Metacritic) and if the sequel is as amazing, you can't really say Sony takes it, now can you? Xenoblade Chronicles scored just one point less than Uncharted 4 whereas The Lost Legacy and X scored the same. In either case, both are Uncharted 4 and Xenoblade Chronicles are argued to be better games than Horizon. Totally debatable. The way I see it, The Frozen Wilds will be great and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will be great.

Both are having a great year and I don't see much merit in declaring a "winner". The article itself is problematic in using such precise language. I have to say though, it's difficult to dispute that Sony has won in terms of overall offering, but the fact that Nintendo just being able to take first party might bother some people is a bit unhinged. Nintendo can have a perfect Metacritic of 100 for every game they release this year, but that doesn't change the fact that Sony killed it this year with the quantity of quality games.

If Nintendo delivers all around, just let it go.

The switch looks like it's recycling games from the wiiu and just releasing stuff you have had before. I'm not a fan if remasters or upscaled old games either on ps4 or the x. PS4 has been out longer, so that's a given.
That doesn't detract from the fact that the Switch's first 6 months are setting very high standards, and the majority of its games are high quality.
Yeah, it's missing the most graphically-intensive mainstream multiplats, but that doesn't mean that its current roster of exclusives doesn't stand toe-to-toe in entertainment value to anything the competition has put out.
It wouldn't be selling to the point of having stock issues if that were the case.

Just be happy that Nuntundo is ahead of Microsoft. It took seven years for a Metroid game, that's not even designed in-house, and gets thrown on the portable system everyone is supposed to forget. Pretty sure people are overestimating how good South Park is going to be. The first game was made by Obsidian, who are some of the top RPG developers out there. Sure the sequel may still be a good game, but I'd honestly be surprised if it was better than the first one.

No, I own a Wii U and I'm planning on buying a Switch, and XB is definitely gonna be bought.

The only GOTY contenders (in my oh so humble opinion) on Switch right now are Mario O and BOTW. And the latter is being VERY forgiving of it's many, many flaws.

Both consoles have done great this year but subjectively speaking Sony has done flat out better.

The first 3 months consisted 8 exclusives none of which were indie or multiplat, none of which rated below an 80 on metacritic and 2 which rated above a 90. After that it has literally been exclusive after exclusive after exclusive almost every month. Keep in mind I'm still ignoring Indies and big 3rd party games.

My highlights for Sony this year are gravity rush 2, nioh, horizon zero dawn, nier automata, kingdom hearts 1.5 +2.5 hd, persona 5, tales of bersia, crash and Wipe out omega collection. I'll add gt sport to that list soon.

So far my highlights for Nintendo are Zelda botw, Mario kart 8 deluxe and soon to be splatoon 2.

The reason why I'm PS Loyalist because I bought the first PS console and It changed my life ever since. Lol if it's having a conference In December then don't that mean those games coming in 2018......this Nintendo conference was for this year for September to December with 3 or 4 games for 2018....so out of 12 games for 3ds maybe 2 or 3 for next year......with switch having 24 games announce it is same with 2 or 4 games coming 2018 with majority coming September to December.......not counting the nindies even the exclusive ones that are coming between September to December........so i guess you can go listen to a conference for next year, we will focus on finishing this year

The games Sony will present at their conferences will most certainly be for next year. However, most of the content Nintendo showed on their direct will be playable this year, and some were even available immediately afterwards.

Not to mention all the other great games the Switch has already received this year. You can criticize some of them for being Wii U ports, sure, but the PS4 is no better in the port department.

The PS4 and Switch are both doing fantastic this year. Personally, I think that the Switch is having an absolutely stellar first year. One of the best in a while.

It's amusing how you go on a tangent about Nintendo's conference yet seem to conveniently neglect that Sony will have their own pre TGS conference next week. In fact throughout the entirety of TGS there will be more PS4 games featured than NS games.

Once again no shit. The entire point of holding a conference in December, the last month of the friggen year, is to get people hyped for the content releasing he next year.

Once again I find it revealing how you & Gem seemed to conveniently ignore how I said Sony will have a conference NEXT WEEK and you guys seemed to only narrowly focus on the PSX comment.

PS4 has received far more games than NS had this year, so idk what point you're even trying to make with that. Who'd criticize ports? The ability to play great games on any platform is a great thing.

NS is having a great year, but PS4 is undoubtedly having a better year .

I didn't narrow in on PSX. Where in my comment did I focus on PSX individually? I said "conferences". Though you bring up a point. Why include PSX at all when even you know none of the games announced will launch this year?

PS4 has received more games, but I feel the Switch has received and will receive better games. Ive enjoyed BotW and Splatoon 2 more than anything else I have on PS4. Xenoblade 2 is looking just as good as its first entry, and Mario Odyssey might be even better than BotW. That isn't even mentioning the 3DS games we've received. I'm playing Samus Returns right now and, I must say, It's the best 2D Metroid we've had since Super Metroid.

So the PS4 isn't "undoubtedly" having a better year. Not for me, not for a lot of people. You trying to make this extremely subjective topic into an objective statement is pretty revealing yourself, you know what I mean?

I bring up PSX because many things still happen for the PlayStation brand after that conference during December. For example Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 was rereleased for PS4 last December, FFVII HD was released for PS4 in Dec 2015, & EA gave away three free games at the first PSX in 2014. I could very well ask you why does this article exist when many of the titles shown off at the Nintendo Direct aren't arriving this year.

It's fine if you enjoyed those NS & 3DS. But objectively there's been a far more diverse amount of games to enjoy on PS4 than any other platform, in both quality and quantity. Even Vita continues receiving quality titles and support here and there.

It is an objective fact that PS4 has had the better year for the majority of the gaming industry, for consumers and developers.

PS4 has sold more hardware and software than any other dedicated platform this year.

I don't know how you can't be objective with pure quantitative and qualitative evidence like that. But if you want to look at these facts and choose to ignore them being presented, then that's your own subjective choice to do so.

You can't objectively measure subjective feelings. It's the same reason why some of you Sony fans say you like Horizon: Zero Dawn better than Zelda, subjectivity. I don't understand why you are talking about hardware numbers or software sales numbers. I'm quite clearly speaking of quality of games, which hardware numbers doesn't affect. As for number of games, well, I can't afford to purchase (nor do I have the time to play) every game on either list. I pick and choose what experiences I feel I'd prefer and, so far, Nintendo has had the best experiences for me this year.

You cannot say that my disposition is objectively wrong when I say I feel the Nintendo Switch is having a better year than the PS4 because that is my subjective opinion. Just like this article is someone else's subjective opinion. There is no right answer to the question "Who is having a better year". You only think you have the right answer because you refuse to see any other perspective.

You must be in denial, Sony has had a stellar year, Nintendo is pretty great, they had a strong start this year with the Switch and I plan to buy one at some point for the exclusives. But your kidding yourself if you think Nintendo out performed them in quantity and quality this year (although it was a champion effort, most consoles don't a first year this good). The only console that did poorly this year is Xbox.

I will wait on Mario Odyssey, Fire Emblem Warriors before saying that. So far, with Zelda, Snipperclips and (miraculously) Mario + Rabbids, they're having one heck of a year, even if I didn't even bother looking at Splatoon 2 or 1,2 Bargain Bin.

The Switch has gotten great 1st and 2nd party support this year and the PS4 has also gotten great 1st and 2nd party support this year but see.. the difference is that the while the PS4 has great 1st and 2nd party support it also has great third party support. I can't say the same for the Switch. While the Switch has definitely had a great year and is beginning to get decent 3rd party support, it has still missed out on a lot of 3rd party support this year which is why I would have to give this year to the PS4.

I don't even put Persona 5 and Nier in the same category, but personally I like hard categories for my games (e.g. P5 = JRPG, Nier = Action). Personally I think Xenoblade 2 looks kinda terrible but to each their own, it wasn't what I expectrd when I heard there would be a sequel.

Yep. I've played 80+ hours and I am extremely disappointed in how overrated I find Zelda. The shrines are the best part of the game, imo, but I find I am forcing myself to play the game because it is SUPPOSED to be incredible. In my mind, it is just ok. I really wanted to love the game. But frankly, I enjoyed Mass Effect Andromeda more.

Need one more cool game, beyond Mario and Xenoblade 2, to justify a Switch for me -- I already scored Zelda on Wii U, because it was basically the same as the Switch version.

I'm not gonna buy crossplat software on the Switch though.. heck no, why would I? Reeeally hoping they fix the "it heats up and warps" problem before I buy one, though. It's not gonna move from the dock much, for me.

I still think the Switch is basically a fad for rich peeps. No respectable 3rd party games should ever expect to sell more there than on Xbox One, let alone PS4. That'll kill it, in the end... just like the Wii and Wii U.

The crazy this is that they will be in the running for a bunch of different game of the year awards:

Sites all do their nominations differently, but here's what categories Nintendo will likely get nods in:

Adventure game or open world game: Breath of the Wild is a lock to win.

Platformer: Super Mario Odyssey is a lock to win.

Strategy: Mario Rabbids looks to be a lock to win.

Remaster (yes, some sites have this category): Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a lock for a nomination.

RPG: Xenoblade will likely get a nomination.

Shooter: Splatoon 2 will likely get a nomination.

GOTY: Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild will both be front runners for GOTY.

At this point Nintendo will be taking home half the GOTY awards, lol.

Reading comprehension still isn't your strength. The Xenoblade series has traditionally gotten a good reception so I said it will "likely" (not certainly or anything of the sort) get a "nomination" for RPG of the year. I think Persona V is a lock for RPG of the year. Horizon isn't even an RPG so putting that in there as a possibility is far more ridiculous than saying Xenoblade will get a nomination.

I also didn't say Splatoon 2 would win shooter of the year, I said it would "likely" get a "nomination" for shooter of the year.

Likely: "such as well might happen or be true; probable." or "apparently suitable; promising."

Nomination: "the action of nominating or state of being nominated."

Also, the only game that hasn't released that I suggested might get overall game of the year is Super Mario Odyssey, which is generally considered by just about anyone to be a lock for a nomination.

xenoblade 2 might be excellent but it's too bad it came out the same year as persona 5. No way it's better. The only big new announcement out of that direct was doom/ wolfenstein. Everything else was meh... And we don't even know what Doom will look like and it will definetlly come out for 60 bucks on the switch when it will be dirt cheap everywhere else.

Why in the blue hell would they lose all 3rd party exclusivity c-ali?? There are many externally made exclusives out there that stay exclusive forever.

Insomniac and From are independent studios that makes multiplat games. If you think Bloodborne, Ratchet and Resistance are gonna pop up on Xbox one day and shouldn't be counted cuz of the studio, you're the foolish one. Just cuz a third party studio made LittleBigPlanet 3, don't think Sony doesn't own it smh. Various deals out there. Just look at MGS4 and SplinterCellConviction.

What does that have anything going to do with it. Yes Sony doesn't own the ip but they are exclusives and Sony is benefitting from those games

The reason those are exclusives games is because the publishers feel the games wouldn't do well on other platforms

I don't understand? Why did you list third-party made exclusives though? You cannot be speaking from both sides of your mouth because it just doesn't make any sense because I've noticed when it's convenient to bring up third party games coming to the switch ,you do , yet you're disregarding them on this list.

And then proceeded to list a bunch of remasters in ports

It just has new stuff at the end of the calendar.. PS4 had a lot of great games this year so i cant say Nintendo won even though i cant wait for many of these games.. Both consoles are worth every dime i spent on them.. I will say the switch is doing a fantastic job for only being 6 months or so old..

Best launch year for any system and best year period imo. Zelda, Mario Odyssey, and Xenoblade are going to be the three highest rated titles of the year. Splatoon 2 is my fav mp title of the year. Nin has 2017 on lock.

Breath of the wild gameplay wise is more complex and has more detail than any game on the PS4 besides Shadow of Mordor which is a multiplatform game.

so, the list consists of a few games that populate ALL nintendo consoles and then the bulk are filled with games that have already been released on every other platform over the past 2+ years. winning!!!
I really don't understand the blind love people have for Nintendo, Sure, mario was fun....25 years ago. It's like being 25 and you still loving watching Sesame Street, Sure Oscar the grouch has possibly become a slightly more complex muppet from 30 years ago...but who the hell cares?

I'm going with PS4, literally haven't stopped playing it since the beginning of the year with Tales of Berseria, then Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, Crash Bandicoot NSane Trilogy, Uncharted The Lost Legacy, and now on Destiny 2

Nintendo definitely takes second place for me though

Seriously they are. As always Nintendo invests in gaming not entertainment. I get people want there systems with power, teraflops, and 4k but I felt it was a slap in the face for gamers when Sony and Microsoft launched these upgraded systems at the price of a new system. There was no reason these systems shouldn't of have been a new launch system instead they seem to always focus on the glitz and glamour of a system and not the quality. People seem to forget the PS4 hack or the malfunctioning xboxes and I feel it happens because they could care less about quality of the system and what it brings to gaming, can't tell you how many PS4 updates are due to "better quality performance". Nintendo still goes for gaming, investing in changing it, upgrading it, just making it feel fresh. The switch will gain back the consumer trust, which should be there main priority this year and there doing an absolutely stellar job.

That is more than "2 or 3" AAA during the 10 months of its release. And you should compare the first year of the Switch to to FIRST year of the PS4, not after 4 year of its release. That at least would have made the comparison abit more fair, would it?

I'd like to say PC has won, but in the console space heck yeah. Not only did they release the highest rated game of all time, not only is the Switch still sold out, not only is the 3DS still selling like hotcakes, but they have gained 3rd party support and have been releasing AAA titles that people want. Remember last time Nintendo gained 3rd party support? Wii and that badboy was the fastest selling console.

With Mario O, Samus Returns, Xenoblade chronicles 2, and Fire Emblem as first party support along with South Park, WWE2k18, Wolfenstein, Skyrim, and countless others from 3rd party Nintendo showed the most growth.

As it stands right now the top ten games this year are Zelda, Persona, Mario Kart, Samus Returns, Nioh, Horizon, Uncharted, Mario + Rabbids, Splatoon 2, and Resident Evil 7. Half of those belong to Nintendo and there is 0 doubt in my mind that Mario will be the highest rated game of all time next to Zelda. The only real competition Nintendo has is Sony and Valve.

The Switch isn't "sold out" anymore, the artificial shortages and fantasy hype are over. And the games library continues to be weak, with a few first party games and some 3rd party indies already available on many other platforms. Also the games you list are mainly geared towards diehard Nintendo fans, a market that continues to shrink every year. Not much to get excited about there at all.

You forgot GuiltyGearX3rd Rev2 at 86% meta and HatsuneMiku at 84, but you remembered Arms at 77?

You forgot GranTurismoSport but you remembered a buncha fringe fluff on Switch I've never even heard of and had to look up like Snipperclips, and frikking Flip Wars in all its 53% metacritic glory LMFAO!!!

Ys came out in 2016, as did Hatsune smarty!! but more to the point those may not be exclusive to much longer. and Falcom games aren't huge sellers you are going to win a year on!

Gultygear rev 2 is an upgrade from a 2014 game.... They weren't mentioned for a reason they ARE NOT 2017 games..

Why are you such a try hard? Nobody brought up scores because it was a list of exclusives. You picked the three lowest scoring games to prove your point but it still makes no difference, the point remains.

Guilty gear x3rd rev 2 dropped here in May, Hatsune miku future tone Jan 10. Look up the dates on meta. REV2 came out here in may 2017. Y's came out on --PS4-- in Japan and NA in may/sept. Ain't talking about vita or whatever you're on about while simultaneously name dropping Wii u ports lol. Like cmon dude. You can't give me shit after listing games on wii u and 3ds.

Try hard? I only looked up scores on the games YOU LISTED. I didn't cherry pick anything as I hadn't even heard of those bombas until YOU made a list full of them. You did this to yourself. If they suck, they suck.

Not in my opinion considering my favorite purchase this year was the PS4 pro, and my favorite games this year were forza 6, horizon 3, uncharted 4, lost legacy , horizon zero dawn, destiny 2 and gta5.

I own a Switch. After finishing BOTW it’s pretty much just been collecting dust cuz I just don’t care about most of the games available on it. Arms is fun but isn’t in it for the long game. Multiplatform games run worst on switch and I’m not really into a jrpgs or neo geo ports.

Well, they've managed to do quite well with the Switch all things considered, but agree to disagree. As far as I'm concerned this year has belonged to Sony from the start, and it will take more than one Nintendo Direct to change that. Even MS is having difficulty keeping up with Sony, and they're due to release the more powerful X. Actually, maybe the correct term is even MS is having difficulty preventing the large sales gap between the PS4 and XB1 line from increasing even further. Nintendo is doing better than they have been in the past, but they have a huge uphill battle ahead of them, and that's not going to be any less true by the end of 2017.

Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Mario Kart 8, Fire Emblem Warriors, and having great 3rd party support and indie support. The Switch came out swinging in its first year.

Compare that to the first year of the PS4 and Xbox One,and the Switch definitely comes out on top.

PS4 is the most promising out of them all including the Scorpio because of the quality of it's first party titles. Nintendo sure has quality first party titles, just not at the rate of PlayStation. And Microsoft has a whole lot of catching up in that aspect.

Horizon, Lost legacy (expansion but what the hell), GR2, GT sport, MLB... probably forgetting something vs Zelda, Mario, Splatoon, Arms, Xenoblade... probably forgetting something as well. Not much of a difference in the number of games that both Nintendo and Sony released this year. Which one you prefer is subjective.

I wouldn’t describe them as “winning the year” based on the direct itself; it was almost entirely a rehash of things that were already announced. They mostly showed games they’ve already announced and shown before, describing features that have either already been described or are boring. Mario Odyssey has a photo mode. Boring. The Xenoblade and Octopath portions where so interminably long and filled with redundant information. Xenoblade II has a “system” with a very complex, flowery name: You build up a meter by attacking enemies and then you can spend the points on a special attack. The kept saying and paraphrasing over and over again that Octopath Traveler has 8 characters that you can play as. Oh and I guess it also has a system where you fill a meter to do special attacks. Is there a pattern here?

I wonder if “Lonely Regret: A Lightbringer Story,” a JRPG that I just made up but will probably exist on the Switch at some point, will have a meter building system with a name like the “inverse flow overdrive system.” See, you’ll build up a meter and then you can spend points on a special attack. Now we need to explain this in a 15 minute video that tells you in the most drawn out, roundabout, repetitive way possible that you build up a meter to do special attacks. It’s almost like these games are extremely simplistic, highly repetitive grindfests that use very complicated, over-drawn visuals, lofty sounding, over-worded terminology, and extremely verbose, redundancy filled dialogue as a smoke screen to make everything appear much more sophisticated than it actually is.

Nintendo and Sony are both having great years. Nintendo's is a bit more unexpected (at least for a lot of people), so I give them a little bit of an edge. The new console launch could have been bad after what the wii u was, so to do as well as they're doing is definitely a win. That's no knock on Sony either, so have put out a ton of great and successful games this year. Microsoft hasn't done much yet, but they always seem to end things for the fourth quarter, so theirs is TBD.

I'd say Playerunknown won 2017 himself, netting a ridiculous amount of cash for what amounts to a very clever Arma engine mod and occupying the minds of just about every games writer on the planet for a chunk of the year. I'm not even interested in playing PUBG and that still seems pretty obvious. It's a little depressing! I don't want that much attention on that ugly of a game! XD

Beyond that, though, for real GOTY contenders it's mostly all Nintendo. Zelda, Mario (well, that's a prediction but come on), Metroid, what looks like a great Xenoblade, and even that crazy Rabbids crossover that defined the year in gaming. Others that stand a real chance are Nier: Automata and Nioh, two games that are primarily PS4 titles. In fact, it might be more accurate to say that Japan won 2017 - let's throw Persona 5 in the mix, too.

Yes, it's not over yet, of course - looking at what's left, Wolfenstein II and Battlefront II may take us by surprise.

Why can't people just be happy? I own all 3 consoles and im excited about games for all three. PS4 is my main, but around here if its not pumping up PS4, you get blasted. If you spent more time playing video games than trolling about video games you would be happier. Or not if you are just a masochist. Or a millennial

They did. I think Nintendo wanted to show everyone they are not done. This direct should have been their E3, which was really good, but this direct was better than their E3 showing. Also, Nintendo is finally starting to listen to their fans a lot. (They still got some memory issues to deal with) but they are giving great games, lots of great exclusives and lots of diversity. That is much better than what Sony and Microsoft.

PS4 has been winning, Nintendo aint doing crap compared to them neither Xbox. Right now Xbox and Nintendo are competing against each other and if the winner of the two improves enough, they will try to finally compete with ps4.

I love Nintendo and Playstation. I still playing Wii U games like Zelda and Mario's and next year i will get Switch. PS4 and Switch will be good partner for me until PS5 shows up;)

I understand that the writer is excited, but there is a bit of delusion here. You can't compare this to PS4s line up of new exclusives in 2017 and call it a win.

they did for me at least if we are doing the whole winning thing... but nintendo has had a great year one of the best imo for a launch year i can't remember another system thats had as many games that interest me released in launch year i mean its only been 6 months so far. There has been some stuff that i don't "get" though re splatoon 2 i don't understand how people like that game its just not enjoyable to me which is a shame cause it seems to be one of the biggest switch games.
