Short answer: Yes, and no. That awful Cuphead gameplay alongside other YouTubers' outlook on the subject has brought a lot of controversy towards Gaming Journalists. But should they be skilled to play video games at all?

Sony has refreshed the Holiday Sale, as new titles are added and a lot have been removed.

The Epic Games Store is giving away two Styx games this week.

The new offering is geared towards 'senior decision-makers' across the industry.
Yes they should be highly skilled at any video game
Of course...they are being paid to do something they enjoy.
This guy can't even play Cup Head despite being paid for it and I can't even get an article submitted to WhatCulture (they are based in my town...I know but it's a foot in the door) which I do in my own time.
Some games take a while to get used to, but there is no excuse for a gaming journalist to be as bad as he was at Cuphead. He played the game like he had barely played a game in his life. You have to wonder just how much this guy actually plays games........i actually wonder that with a lot of gaming journalist though. It's hard to take a game journalists opinion seriously when they obviously don't actually spend much time gaming.
Video reviews of Sonic games is another example of how poor games journalists are at games. They die, die and die again, but instead of blaming themselves, they blame the controls or game angle. No, you just suck at playing games.
I agree that they should be good at the games that they are reviewing; but in the same token, should food critics be good chefs, movie critics be good directors?
Should car reviewers be able to drive with a stick?
It kind of goes with the territory, if you write about games it's fair to assume you also play games. You don't need to be a pro gamer of course, nor do you need to be a pro racing driver to review cars. Considering the people you write for generally know their way around a controller they would expect you do too. Or you just won't be taken seriously, and you don't deserve to be.
