Digital Foundry: Hands-on with Skyrim on Switch

Gamescom 2017 has offered up few exciting stories for Digital Foundry so far, but the playable debut of the Switch version of Skyrim at the Nintendo booth proved to be a genuine surprise - and the good news is, the port is looking very strong.

"To what extent Bethesda is tapping into the full range of Special Edition features for the Switch version remains unclear, but certainly the consistency in performance is very much like the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 releases we saw last year. On top of that, the developer has integrated Joycon motion controls too for those that want them. We kept our controllers docked to the main unit where gameplay and menu system navigation runs very much like the existing console editions of the game. Of course, the Switch version's unique aspect is its sheer portability, the system-level sleep function allowing you to dip in and out of the game whenever you please. But if what we played is indeed fully representative of how the final game shapes up when running in mobile mode, the Switch port of Skyrim should be well worth checking out. We've tried playing the game on an Intel Atom-based tablet with integrated graphics and the experience is nothing like as good as this - if you're looking to play a fully portable Skyrim, you're looking at a larger gaming laptop to offer the visual feature set and performance the Switch version is offering. Ultimately, 15 minutes of hands-on time with a game only goes so far - especially in a vast game like Skyrim - but what we've seen so far holds up really well, and we're looking forward to taking a deeper look at the final release."

sounds good, never played Skyrim before

Gazondaily3192d ago

Wow I remember some people who were quick to deride the Switch version but this looks good. Go on Nintendo!

Erik73573191d ago

Its just cool cause we never had a game like this of this scale on the go before so awesome!

VariantAEC3190d ago

Hmm.
Maybe maybe not. Vita had it's share of open world 3D action games and RPGs. Of course if you're interested in the spectacle and performance then Switch wins... But scale?
Gravity Rush wasn't an RPG but it's world was pretty large. Borderlands 2 is an RPG (not sure if it was open world though).
Curious.
Also infinite worlds in MC were on Mobile for a long time and that world is larger than Skyrim too... So even outside of Vita larger worlds are available in your pocket, but once again Skyrim on Switch is hard to top if you're going for spectacle on the go.

This is like the first WRPG on a Nintendo console since 2012

Venoxn4g3191d ago

What about Mass effect 3 on wii u?

_-EDMIX-_3191d ago

I thought the same thing and checked the date before I posted. He stated " Nintendo console since 2012"

"since 2012"

FallenAngel19843191d ago

@ Edmix

Yeah really. Even Xbox consoles have received more JRPGs than Nintendo consoles have received WRPGs

@ Venox

That's the very WRPG I'm talking about...

_-EDMIX-_3191d ago

Thats crazy. I'm not surprised XONE is getting more JRPGs either, they have the hardware and the install base is open to buying 3rd party games. Nintendo's install base legit MOSTLY buys Nintendo IP. Its why I'm not shocked that FFXIII, FFXIII-2, FFXIII-3, FFXV, KH3 etc are on XB and not a Nintendo platform. Sure, Nintendo is more Japanese and many times gets some of those Japanese games, but their install base overwhelmingly only really buy Nintendo IP.

PC, XB and PS don't have a publisher that 95% of the install base only buys, so more 3rd party are welcome to sell content. If Skyrim works for Bethesda, I see them porting Oblivion!

wonderfulmonkeyman3190d ago (Edited 3190d ago )

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on the whole "Nintendo gamers only buy Nintendo games" thing, Ed.
Just because they don't bend over backwards to buy every single mainstream AAA third party multiplats whenever one happens to land on a Nintendo system, doesn't mean that Nintendo gamers don't buy and enjoy other games made by third party and indie developers.
You only need look at games like Shantae, Shovel Knight, Stardew Valley, Azure Striker Gunvolt, and plenty of other great none-Nintendo items to see that you're very very wrong about saying "mostly", let alone overwhelmingly.
Nintendo doesn't put out enough of their super big games in a short amount of time to constitute "mostly", so the majority of Nintendo gamers buy a lot of stuff on the side whenever something pops up that looks at least half way decent.

In fact, I'd argue that one of the reasons the BIG Nintendo games usually get big sales is because they come out so much more infrequently, compared to the flood of games from third parties which outnumber Nintendo's games in quantity.

EddieNX 3192d ago

It looks sick, i'll gladly buy it. Shows off what the Switch is all about.

wonderfulmonkeyman3191d ago

Glad that there seems to be some Special Edition features coming to it.
I hope the DLC is all included, too; never got to finish all of it.

Vegamyster3191d ago (Edited 3191d ago )

It does, on the bottom of the box art it says "Includes - Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn"

_-EDMIX-_3191d ago

As Vega stated, it was confirmed a while ago that this version has all the DLC. I don't know if that Link stuff is out of the box or as some add on later or whats the deal with it. I want to say thats in game....I didn't hear anything about where it would be though.

Neonridr3191d ago

yeah, the Link stuff is just an added bonus for Nintendo owners. Whether or not you have to do something in game to activate it is still unknown at this point. But Bethesda has never indicated that the Link stuff will be only available through purchasing. That would be real shitty.

_-EDMIX-_3191d ago

@Neo- "But Bethesda has never indicated that the Link stuff will be only available through purchasing. That would be real shitty."

That would be, but hey they are charging full price for this which I feel is a bit much....like a lot. I don't see me buying this version legit, in years. I'll likely get it if I want to do a random play-through on the go, but $60 is just way too high. At least with the PS4 and XONE version you get you are paying for mods and visual junk, but I think Bethesda are taking advantage of the situation, like Capcom did with SSFII and the Rime developers did.

Neonridr3190d ago

@EDMIX - oh absolutely. Any new system gives devs free reign to overcharge sadly. Then if it doesn't sell the devs can be like "see, nothing sells on Nintendo systems but their games" :P

_-EDMIX-_3190d ago

@Neo- lol I didn't care for them charging full price for the PS4 and XONE remasters even with mods, this is simply them taking advantage, but I can see how a publisher might want to charge more based on less likely sales.

Its hard to argue against the concept that most Nintendo gamers only buy Nintendo games. Bethesda knows they will sell less by default of that install base, thus are trying to charge more money to get what they can get. They are making a WRPG on Switch, they are in a situation where clearly they can charge more based on being the only WRPG on the system, but they can also charge more based on knowing they will sell less because of that install base. I don't think it will sell less solely based on the price, I think it ultimately will sell less because the core install base doesn't really buy 3rd party games like they buy first party games.

Bethesda could have done everyone a solid and just made this game 39.99 and been fine.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle23d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
