I agree that people have cared about crossplay with PC for a long while now.

But even as people talked about crossplay with PC (as far back as far back as Final Fantasy 11 on PS2), nobody ever talked about (or cared about) cross-console play between consoles from different companies from 2005 through 2015 (the same way nobody today expects to buy songs on iTunes & play them on Android devices).

I'm not saying nobody cares today...I'm saying nobody cared about crossplay between consoles until 2016 (even though online console gaming has been big for over a decade)...I'm just wondering why it matters so much to people when nobody ever spoke of it for the entire 10 years of online console gaming prior to 2016.

Coincidentally, Sony and Microsoft were far more competitive last generation. Microsoft also said no to it when they were doing better in their territory... now, they're not.

Sony's excuse may be bogus, but maybe this hope of cross platform play is just a ruse on both sides because the side that wants it (the losing side) knows the winning side will not agree to it.

At the very least, Sony does not mind cross play with PC-- they've been doing it longer than Microsoft with the PS2 which is bloody tragic. With consoles, let's wait and see how Microsoft reacts when they're the console leaders again....*IF they're ever the console leaders again.

If the host has to be tethered to the Xbox account, I'm not sure I would allow it either. They're not using neutral environment hosts, but are using P2P with Xbox hosts being primary. People should be allowed to determine primary host, not just "XBL user is host".

But, having said that, I'm guessing Sony still wouldn't allow it even if the PS4 had to be the primary host. Because, hey, they're winning and stuff.

Yeah, this is why I made that last statement. I mean, it's stupid to prefer one platform as host over another, but even then, if they use neutral ground services, Sony still doesn't want it for some reason. Only logical conclusion is business decision was made, not user-based decision.

I read that and thought it might be a problem, but he did say "IF", which I'm assuming means that the opposite would be true.

But, reading that, and unsure if it was related to the cross play thing, it made me wonder if the issue is Sony isn't willing to allow cross play with other consoles that utilize P2P connections. I could see this actually being a fairly serious security concern for any company, which wouldn't be an issue with Sony's own network API's to fascilitate the feature on PC. Moldy won't understand, but in this, just trust me that P2P anything is generally frowned upon for cross network interpretation. Such a thing, if I was in charge of their network security, I would say would need a neutral API developed jointly, or through a independant 3rd party, where the low level security protocals would be protected from the other company.

Minecraft is the only game which uses dedicated servers I'm aware of with all these devs which are saying things, and I can see the reason why Sony wouldn't want the whole XBL requirement.

But if what I'm thinking might be true, then it actually does make more sense why Sony has not been interested.

In any case, until a dev can say why Sony had denied them, the argument seems to be where it's always been. Moldy will blame Sony, I'll posit potential scenarios and admit Sony may just not care to offer it, and a lot of others probably won't care that much.

I'd love if Sony and MS just started allowing it without so much fuss, or one or both of the companies coming out and being transparent on the reasons why without trying to spin it into some nonsense which probably isn't the the entirity of the situation.

Cross play isn't needed by PS4 fans, and that excludes the very small number of people like you. As I said before, you guys will go to any lengths to make it Microsoft's fault. Doesn't matter about what developers want, doesn't matter that Nintendo was greenlighting this years ago for Pure Chess and Sony ignoring those requests from the developer back then too. Nope, it's Microsoft's fault.

@mouldy Sony don't really consider themselves in competition with PC. They've said this before. The pro was to offer an alternative for customers moving to PC only but in reality it was primarily aimed at 4k TV owners.

For the record, I play on PS4 80% of the time, I just have several groups of friends who exclusively play on Xbox One but I am too established on Ps4 to make the switch now.

Do you mean from a business stand point? Why would they? It doesn't benefit them in any way, it benefits Microsoft giving them access to PS4 players.

It would mean people don't need to buy a PS4 to play certain games with their friends on PS4 and can buy an Xbox instead. It would actually be a really dumb business decision. Most people that play games do so on PS4 meaning chances are most people's friends own a PS4, to play with them you must own a PS4...

Sony know no one buys a PS4 to play with Xbox players either so when people try to pretend it is somehow hurting their player base it is nonsensical.

If a game is dead in PS4 chances are it already died on Xbox One long ago so no it won't help prolong games on PS4. It would actually benefit consumers more to buy a PS4 to play with the larger user base regardless of if they are your friends or not.

And no it isn't hurting developers either by not having it, developers already make a lot more from PS4 than any other platform.

Microsoft is only promoting this for PR reasons. They denied it last gen when they were in the lead for good reason. Why would Sony help them now? If a competitor screws you over in the past why would you go out of your way to help them when you have the upper hand? Again that would just be bad business.

Lastly 99% of people that play video games don't care no matter how much they pretend to on the internet. Most of these threads are filled with Xbox fanboys just looking to take shots at Sony. Likely because they are insecure about their own platform. They also probably don't even like playing with each other since they know they themselves are so toxic.

There is no logical reason for Sony to give Microsoft Access to their player base. Just like why you can't buy McDonald's food at Burger King, McDonald's wants you to go to their restaurant to buy their food but I'm sure BK would love it if you could buy both at their restaurant, more customers.

I am more than aware why Sony aren't for it, but at this point it's coming across from a more greedy/monopolising stand point. You have support from Xbox, Switch and PC and the only partner not playing is Sony. Every company is greedy, that's what they exist to do, make as much money as possible, not sure who told you otherwise. One of the reasons Microsoft is pushing this is so they can make more money, they want access to PS4 players and want to give people a reason not to buy one.

Perhaps what they should be doing is investing in video games, the thing people buy video game consoles for instead of asking Sony for handouts. There are even more cross play games between PS4 and PC than there is for Xbox. Sony has no issue with that. The only reason Nintendo is going for it because they barely even have online or a player base. They have nothing to lose while Sony does. Also, Sony is allowing SharePlay, it's something they invented and is not available on Xbox. Perhaps you meant crossplay?

The way everyone should want to have crossplay is actual, proper crossplay. You know, when you can invite your Xbox friends on the PS4 and vice versa to a game and a party chat. But all these games saying they have crossplay running do not implement that. You will only be playing with random people from other consoles you can't pick and chose them.

If they ever do it I hope they will do it the right way with party chat and game invites across networks (XBL, PSN, Steam, Nintendo...)...

Sony have by far, BY FAR a much much stronger line-up of exclusives, and yes, I do have a soft spot for Xbox (the underdog and all I guess) but if any of console-less friends ask me for for advice, I can't recommend the Xbox one over the PS4. But as I said originally, I have several groups of friends who have Xbox Ones, who are getting the One X who I would love to play with, but because Sony don't need this feature they refuse to consider it despite it being very good for the gaming community (considering they prob hold the highest user-base!)
