Why PlayStation Plus Membership is Not Really Worth It

PlayStation Plus or PS Plus is a subscription service for PS3, PS4, and PS Vita owners. PS Plus members get access to premium features, which include PlayStation Store discounts, early access to new games, a monthly supply of free games, automatic updates, and cloud saving.

What's up with this? God.
Wait until the 30th like everyone else.

lnfiniteLoop3206d ago

you think PS+ will change or get better because of a £10 price hike... yeah, lets wait and see...

sonarus3205d ago

People are really really upset sigh Sony over the 10 bucks increase. I buy subscription yearly so I personally haven't really thought about it and won't till about June next yr. I can definitely understand how a 10 dollar increase will piss you off I mean hey how dare they. If you wanna piss Sony off back just do us all a favor and cancel your subscription instead of this endless complaining and nagging.

Get 15 months for 39 quid UK then use the CD key discount to lower it further.

https://www.hotukdeals.com/...

Only putting this in here because of its relevance. For my fellow gamers

darthv723205d ago

I used to be a + member on the PS3. I just wasnt into the games being offered on the service but I did take advantage of some of the discounts. I know i am missing out on the multiplayer for PS4 but then again I have more SP games than MP games so it doesnt really bother me.

I may get + again though. If I can afford to be a gold member for nearly 15 years then I can afford to be a + member.

RommyReigns3205d ago

@Why O Why

Thanks to that yesterday my subscription is now up to February 2020. (To check the expiry date go on the media tab on your SEN account and click a PS+ game)

It never really took off. The number of games that supported it was ridiculously low and likely due to publisher push back.

neoandrew3206d ago

Well funny you said that, cuz sony great games are like 99% times a single player game so you really don't need to pay for mp.

Bennibop3205d ago (Edited 3205d ago )

Nioh, uncharted 4, gravity rush 2, knack 2, gt sport, hot shots golf, farpoint , starboard arena, uncharted lost legacy, matterfall all released in last 12 months all contain online play or elements. This does not include 3Rd party such as lawbreakers, overwatch, battlefield, cod or older games with strong communities Killzone shadowfall or last of us. So you are spouting nonsense.

aconnellan3205d ago

@Bennibop

You're 100% correct and I agree with you to an extent, but realistically speaking you don't hear people saying "go buy Uncharted 4, it's an incredible multiplayer experience!". People buy it for the narrative and SP experience.

It's something where it works, and people enjoy it, but U4 wouldn't really be worse off if multiplayer was removed

Why o why3205d ago (Edited 3205d ago )

Curious

I've hearing this narrative about multiplayer on Xbox all gen . . . . To the point where I expect there to be a substantial amount more than on the PlayStation

Please list these multiplayer games. . . Don't be shy

Dark_Knightmare23205d ago (Edited 3205d ago )

That is such a ridiculous misconception it's annoying. Sonys sp are usually just so above and beyond other games that they get all the attention even when the games have mp which is fine with me because I'll take a awesome sp over a repetitive mp anyday

KickSpinFilter3205d ago (Edited 3205d ago )

Well funny you said that because there's this thing called 3rd party games you might not be aware of that have MP on PS4. And MS really doesn't have SP worth the purchase of a XB1 so you really don't need to pay for an XB1 since you can get all your SP and MP on a PS4 for the exception of MS three games Halo, Gears, Forza. (see it can go both ways) Sit down.

neoandrew3205d ago (Edited 3205d ago )

@Bennibop

Nope, its your BS that is nonsense, you just don't understand anything i said, i couldn't care less about mp in those games, mp is worthless, SINGLE PLAYER is THE THING, you have great story, narrative, mystery, characters, cinematic, cut scenes, this is where those games matters, not some mp for fun...

This is where sony SP exclusives shines and you do not need to pay mp for, yet you get the BEST part of those games, no addition cost, this is what i meant. SP IS THE ULTIMATE EXPERIENCE.

I like have ps4 only for that, for best exclusive SP games.

And don't include 3rd party multi platform games, as those are far better played on pc and run also far better on it, and on top of everything of course on pc MP is absolutely free.

"Heaven"?
Is this some thing to do with that great work of fiction where the main protagonist is a magic baby that grows up telling people how to be nice to one another, gets killed Game of Thrones style then comes back as a zombie before flying into the sky.

I suspect the author may have been eating "unusual" mushrooms

On Topic:

PS+ I suppose depends on your tastes. If you like multi player then yes of course it's worth it. If you prefer single player then I suppose maybe not.

Dark_Knightmare23205d ago

I prefer sp way more than mp and plus is still worth it to me

When are you going to complain about the fact that you have to pay for Xbox Live to play FTP games or watch Netflix on Xbox?

Oh that's right.....never.

JackBNimble3205d ago

Moldy
Do you disagree about paying the exact same price as Xboxlive?

Death3205d ago

@Razzer,

You don't have to pay for Live to access FTP or Netflix. If you are complaining about it, you are just trolling. You see less people complain about Live prices because Live has been a paid online gaming service since day 1. Games with Gold was added in June of 2013 for Live subscribers at no extra charge. Xbox 360 GwG are actually yours to keep even if your subscription lapses. This includes BC titles playable on Xbox One.

PS Plus is a game subscription service started by Sony in 2010. Online gaming was free up until the launch of PS4 and PS+ was an optional service. When it was optional, the content was arguably much better. Now that it is mandatory to subscribe to the game subscription service to access online gaming, many people are irritated. Sony didn't add anything to make the service better, they took away free online and downgraded the games from full releases to indies.

freshslicepizza3205d ago

@Death

Well said.

See, he gets it and I don't pay for Xbox Live. I have it on my PC but I don't have to pay a fee to use it. Microsoft tried many years ago to charge on the PC and that failed, rightfully so. Steam is also free, so s Origin from Electronic Arts and so is Blizzard which will host Destiny 2. See a pattern here?

I also subscribed to PS Plus when it first arrived. It was great back then but it was also optional.

Chevalier3205d ago

You mean the paywall introduced by MS during the 360 and continue to this day? Don't see you complaining about Xbox though?! Lol. Sorry I own all the systems and these 'differences' you suggest with cloud etc is a load of garbage Moldy. Get those rose tinted glasses off. Xbox Live has little differences now.

Chevalier3205d ago

@Death

" PS Plus is a game subscription service started by Sony in 2010. Online gaming was free up until the launch of PS4 and PS+ was an optional service. "

Plus has party chat this gen which we didn't have last gen and we have better games recently as well. More people to play games is also a bonus. Xbox hasn't changed much and is pretty much the same and you guys are paying and the whole idea became a thing is because Xbox made paying for something free on PC a 'service' yet you guys never blame Xbox for starting this trend. You can't cry Wolf if your the ones that opened the chicken coup and let it in. The hypocrisy by BOTH you and Moldy is rich. You guys praise Xbox to high heavans and what has it got you? It sure isn't a lot of game investment.

Christopher3205d ago (Edited 3205d ago )

***I also subscribed to PS Plus when it first arrived. It was great back then but it was also optional.***

Anyone who says this is lying. First year was filled with PS mini game bs. The AAA games didn't come until the last two years of the PS3, and mostly towards the end of that generation.

And Microsoft and Sony attempted to different avenues for helping to pay for costs. Microsoft charged you online from the get go, Sony tried to go with a weird subscription plan. Sony needed more and put the paywall up while offering six games a month across three devices. Microsoft had to remain competitive and did their own games, eventually getting to doing BC because they needed more people to have a reason to go to them over PS4. Both offer AAA games and primarily indie games, and only silly people who have a side in this stupid game of consoles tries to say otherwise.

The fact is both companies try to give as much as they can be spending as little as possible and their tactics are slightly different but really the same in the end. The quality will ebb and flow from month to month, that's just how it goes.

rainslacker3205d ago (Edited 3205d ago )

Sony had dedicated servers for PS3 when MP was free, and all they got was people complaining that the service wasn't as good as XBL paid service, even though outside the features available, it was pretty stable as far as I could tell.

Sony saw MS making all this money on a basic feature like online, where MS wasn't even providing dedicated servers, and as a business, they wanted a piece of the pie.

Sucks, but it is what it is, because MS, and it's fans, made it acceptable with the fans finding every justification under the sun why it was worth the price.....even though apparently, MS could have offered it up for free the same way Sony did, as MS had much better network infrastructure than Sony did for other aspects of their business.

BTW, Sony still uses dedicated servers for some games. MS only does for some, but most things are P2P nowadays.

I'm curious if I'll ever see you questioning MS service in the future, considering that the two services are basically on par nowadays, with the only really defining aspect between them is their monthly "free" games. Somehow I doubt it, because apparently what MS does is worth the price. Wonder if you'll feel the same way if they start trying to charge on your precious PC platform, which is what you claim to own.

@Death

"You see fewer people complaining about XBL....."

Yeah, but why would moldy complain about Sony, and not MS in this instance? So it's OK for MS to charge for years while not offering up what he's trying to criticize Sony for not offering, and suddenly, MS is in the clear because they've been doing it a while?

That makes no sense whatsoever.

See....you can try to rationalize moldy's comment, but where is this same criticism for MS? Seems what MS does is much more relevant to him than what Sony does considering his claimed PC ownership....which we all know is BS. But even taking him at his word, we all know we won't see him complaining about XBL pricing in a similar article, while he'll use PS+ pricing, or services as a way to bring down PS and Sony in any way he can.

OffRoadKing3205d ago

I can appreciate your anger when it comes to paying for the service, what I dont get is where was, or currently is, all the anger for Microsoft doing the same thing for much much longer then Sony has?

CorndogBurglar3205d ago

Sony's online service has gotten considerably better performance-wise. Its no longer the unstable piece of garbage it was on PS3. I havent had the online go down unexpectedly in a very long time. It was a normal occurance last gen.

The impression I get from the article is that the author would like to extol the virtues of XBox Gold or maybe the PC running Microsoft Windows but then he would have to explain the similarities.

I have a PS+ subscription (expires Aug 2019) which give me online access if I want it although I have no interest in online multiplayer shooters. I also get free games per month of which maybe I like two to four of those free games a year and I still save money. Coupled with all that I can also get fairly good discounts on games although I keep myself aware of second hand and new prices on games as well and purchase appropriately.

The article mentions that the free games you get per month are basically rental and only yours to keep as long as you keep paying the subscription. I would dearly like to know of any subscription service that does not do this and basically gives out free games that you can keep even after you cancel your subscription. Of course, if you don't mind feeding a green parrot, taking the odd swig of rum and singing "Yo Ho Ho" then you can get most of the games you want for free.

PlayStation Plus is worth a lot more than when all subscribing to Xbox Live Gold got you for 10+ years was unlocking half of the functionality for your console. In fact idk why the author even decided to make an article targeted at PS+ when it just as easily applies to XBLG.

- People do in fact love the free games offered through IGC & GWG. This topic shouldn't even be up for debate. The immense popularity of Rocket League alone should be enough to prove you otherwise. Not to mention that Microsoft felt prompted to join in on monthly free games after Sony led the way successfully. Even Nintendo seems to be getting in on the act with a monthly lineup of free retro games. None of this would've happened if "free games weren't attractive." You also seem to conveniently disregard anytime AAA games do come to IGC like this month for example.

- The games being free as long as you subscribe applies to XO GWG titles just as it does with IGC titles. So once again why single out PS+ on this matter?

- It's called offering an option for people who like to store their data to the cloud and easily access it on their friend's console if they didn't bring a storage system with them. Cloud saving is such a very useful feature even Microsoft followed suit.

- Don't even make me laugh. Doom 2016 for example was offered $15 for PS+ members last week and $30 for everyone else. The PS+ discount benefits are real, especially for modern games.

- Locking multiplayer behind a paywall is a bummer. K doubt, but what sucks even more is that one service still locks more behind the wall than the other service. Even to this day playing free to play games, using game DVR, live broadcasting, media sharing, voice/video chattng, & voice messaging comes at no cost on PSN but requires a subscription on XBL.

krypt19833206d ago ShowReplies(2)
andrewsquall3205d ago

@krypt1983 Don't forget that PS Plus allowed your PS3 to update itself AND its games since 2010. People always conveniently forget that PSN and PS Plus also had game save cloud backup functionality before Xbox Live (you know, that subscription that was around since 2001).

Still waiting for your ONE single counter argument lol.

3205d ago
Sonic_Vs_Mario3205d ago

Cloud savings??? It's unlimited on Xbox 360/One that doesn't require a gold subscription to use, while it's limited on PlayStation Plus upto 10GB

nitus103205d ago

Most games saves don't approach 10MB per save so you would need over a 1000 individual game saves of 10MB to get to 10GB.

rainslacker3205d ago

IMO, if someone is into MP, then the whole topic is rather moot. The games just end up being a bonus.

If not, then there is room for discussion, but the value one finds in it is subjective, and any opinion article is going to be nothing more than one anecdotal viewpoint, as opposed to a critical analysis of what it actually offers.

The quality or value of the games offered is always going to be subjective.

The value in the bonus sales you get with a subscription will be appealing, but not to others.

Ultimately, it all comes down to the individual, and no real opinion piece is needed to try and hype it up or discredit it, because a person should make the decision for themselves.

It's not to say an analysis of the pros or cons is a bad thing, but that's about all one can give that should be releavant to the community at large.

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

HectixRose27d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE27d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername26d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy27d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde26d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8626d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8626d ago (Edited 26d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.
