RUMOR: PS2 Emulator Downloadable For the PS3?

Why would they release a 80gb, with no b/c when there is a demand for it like the dual shock 3 controller.

First step is to get that PS2 Emulator running.
Second step is for them to offer ps2 and ps1 games through PSN.

It'll make a lot of people happy bunnies.

Wouldn't it make less sense? I mean if their making ps2 games available on the psn network, why would it makes sense to make ps3 backwards compatible so that users could bypass the psn and go out and purchase used copies of the game? Adding ps2 games that are tweaked for the ps3 to the psn would be all the more reason for sony not to worry about compatibility.

I don't think I understand your comment...right now, I can go out to local pawn shops and get pretty much any psone game, yet they have been selling them on the PSN. People have the option right now to go out and buy Warhawk or Burnout on the PSN or they can do what you are saying and "bypass the PSN" and get a used copy. Are you implying that adding PS2 games to the PSN wouldn't sell? If that is what you are saying, it doesn't make any sense as they are already selling PS3 games on the PSN.

he is saying put all on the ps1 & ps2 catalogs on the PSN and sony could eliminate the need for BC altogether. That way, instead of paying $ to Gamestops & pawn shops for used games, you're giving the money to Sony. If every ps1 & ps2 game (via PSN) has the option of remote play for the PSP and/or HD resolutions for the PS3, sign me up as well. It's a very viable option for Sony if they they make PSN cards readily available.

It makes no sense to drop what made the PS2 stand out. that's B/C with a good Varity of Gaming Libary. PS3 would be better if they quit delaying Great Games. My PS3 is aching for FFXIII & versus.

You can't just "tweak" PS2 games so that they will run under PS3 architecture. I can't explain it as I don't know all the technical jargon, but even PSone games don't run on the PS3 like regular PS3 games...they have their own menu when you hit the "PS" button. The game saves aren't even in the same location as PS3 game saves, so they would still need some form of "emulation" added to the PS3 to play PS2 games. At least that is what I have come to understand.

My 60gig had my PS2 retired to my step son last Christmas. Now it's back on the television it was first connected to. The same television I bought for my PS1. Ahhh, the nostalgia!

They need to put the whole library on PSN, so I can play PS1 and PS2 games on my PSP. PSP's would sell better than DS's if this was the case.
I absolutely need Tenchu and Tomb Raider 2 for my PSP. Tenchu was the game that brought me back to gaming.

Just a thought guys, but if Sony "stole" the PCSX2 emulator and reverse engineered it, would they technically be doing something completely legal? (i.e. because PCSX2 is illegal in the first place)

How foolish!

That is obviously a product description that was written by either:

a) a non-native english speaker
b) a complete non-gamer who couldn't care less and is sorely uninformed and can't interpret something properly

Because there is no software available for download for PS2 emulation on PS3, and if there was, Sony would have announced that for a firmware update.

Obviously this was supposed to say something along the lines of:

"backwards compatibility for PS2 titles can only be added in the future by Sony through a system update or downloadable software update. Currently there is no backwards compatibility for PS2 titles when using this new 80GB SKU"

I also have a 20 Gigger.

I think the solid black look is so much sexier than the 60 with the chrome though.

I replaced the 20GB HD with a 320GB one

Prefer to be wired...

The only thing I would like are memory card readers, but I have a usb converter card that acts like an external SD slot so I'm all good.

Was going to trade it in after the launch for a 60, but I fell in love with my solid black beauty....maybe a little too much.

However I upgraded my hdd to 120 gb last year. Also the wireless problem was resolved by getting a belkin wireless game adapter for 50 bucks from Wal-mart. Big ups to all my fellow 20 GB owners.

It'd be nice for those who don't have a launch Ps2 or one of the original 80gb systems, that's for sure. then again, I don't see myself playing many Ps2 games on my system anymore. I went back and played through the R&C series a few months back and then started a Dragon Quest 8 game but haven't went back to it in awhile... I have about 33 Ps2 games I haven't even opened yet. I got them and over time just didn't ever get around to playing them.

All in all I have over 80 Ps2 games. Sad really... I don't know why I wasted the money now looking back in retrospect.

that's exactly what I'd do too. i'd make people pay 15 bucks for the emulator DL off the PSN store front. That is a great idea, man. That way Sony could weed out the ones who did want it and only cater to those who did. Those who don't would opt to buy the regular system, so Sony wins either way.

Consumer A buys the Ps3 and then the emulator download = money in the bag for Sony.

Consumer B buys a ps2 and doesn't buy a ps3 = money for Sony.

Consumer C buys a Ps3 but doesn't buy the emulator = Money for Sony.

That is exactly how Sony should handle the emulator, if it is true.

I enjoy what little PS3 games I have but I have some PS2 games that I really enjoy playing a lot. I just can't get enough of FFX - FFXII so if they implemented this I would be a very happy camper. Having both consoles is nice but having both in one would be really nice. I Should have kept my 60gb model, oh well.

Let's hope this is not just a rumor :)

I just came back from fantasy land. I was just thinking, if they can get a PS2 emu running on the CELL only (no RSX used), they could actually build a new PS2 with a CELL only. Imagine, they have a $100 cell console, which can run PS2 games, and use PS3 tools. I think Sony will need a low entry machine pretty soon. Bare bone cell based (no HDD, no fancy stuff, but low price and still powerful). sorry was so OT. Anyhow, hope they'll get the SW emu done at some point.

Yes, that's what I'm saying. They will never get the PS3 price down. What's wrong with a 2 product strategy ? They already have it. PS2 & PS3. So, you can compromise on the high end and forcing the developer to support all games without HD (and no BD drive, like MS does with the 360 and holding back the full potential of the 360), or you split it into two, allowing to support the low end with a low end product and the high end with the high end product. Some people just don't want to spend 1xx bucks just to game. But others want high end fidelity. The PS2 will loose shares pretty soon due to a cheaper Wii (will come, mark my words) and the 360 Arcade. If Sony doesn't do anything quick, they not only will loose on the high end, but also the $100 segment.

That would basically make the PS3 lose one of its biggest selling points (the HDD as a standard in all SKUs), thus this would make Sony basically...

Maybe. But that's not what I'm saying. Do not sacrifice the PS3 by removing the HD making a "PS3 Arcade", instead make a PS2+ which shares as much as you can with the PS3 to keep costs down - for both. More CELLs -> higher volume, lower price, but more power to the PS2 to be competitive against Wii/Arcade. Allows the PS3 to get down, and a low end keep the PS2 market alive for much longer. People who do not want a BD player or HD gaming would have an easy entry into gaming, while the PS3 can be dropped in price (somewhat). Win-Win. Again, the PS3 will NEVER (!) go below $200, never. Mark my words. Not with a HDD and a BD drive. If Sony doesn't get this under control, there won't be a PS4.

@Darkpower. I see. So, this needs a bit more explanation, I suppose. Then you misunderstood. What I was trying to say is, if they managed to run a PS2 Emulator on the PS3 - in SW only (! which is important), and they could even run it without the RSX (which does the upscaling right now, if I am not mistaken), then they could build a PS2+ based on a subset of the PS3. They can save almost everything but the CELL, the XDR and the drive (could be a DVD, though). This new machine would not (!!!) run PS3 games. Instead it would run the whole PS2 library, but would allow PS2 studios to possibly run something which will not reach PS3 level, but will be better then PS2 (basically Wii level games, maybe a bit more). I have no idea what such a thing would be called, its not a PS2 and not a PS3, maybe PS2.5. But the idea is, to satisfy the low end market with a product which the PS3 will never cover. If its CELL based, however, those new games might run on a PS3 as well. A perfect hybrid.

The thing PSN should have is some old games from the Sega Genesis days and Super Nes even Nes days. I go on Live i can get the old double dragon or battle toads hell even the ninja turtles games. Don't get me wrong there are some great PS1 games on PSN and I would be stoked if they had PS2 games on there. As for Sony they should make it standard with every PS3 you buy you get a Dual shock 3 with it. But I do hope i can start downloading old arcade games and PS2 Games on PSN

I have a backwards compatible 80gb ps3. If I swap out the hard drive with a larger hard drive I wouldn't lose backwards compatibility, would I? I don't think I would lose it, I just want to be 100% sure.

No, you wouldnt. The emulation on the 80GB is handled by the emulator in the bios (which is not on the HDD) and the GS chip (PS2 graphics chip) on your system.

And about this topic, I sincerely hope that this emulation will allow you to use PS2 discs

One of the main reason's I Always backed Sony. BRING BC BACK INTO PS3. Never EVER discard your library. I have tons of ps1-ps2-ps3 games. I want to play them ALL on one system, and still be able to check my friends list.

It awesome if it is true, but dont get ur hopes up they have no real proof backing up their claim. It sucks they had to take it out in order to lower pricing but something had to go :(.
I have a 60 gig also but i always play my old ps2 games on my old big fatty ps2. Its a gonna be a sad day when it finally keels over or box it up with my other systems of good times gone by.

Sony's going to be holding a pre-TGS event which they'll be announcing all their game line up for japan and future titles!

So expecting some BIG BIG things from sony and other developers!

I can pretty much guarantee the PS2's end-of-life will be next year....putting an emphasis on re-integrating BC is foolish and out of the way in terms of Sony's new goal on uplifting the PS3 and getting it more mainstream.

Sony cannot drop the PS2 until they have a machine which can run PS2 games. They could remove BC simply because the PS2 sold so well. Now that this is coming to an end, BC will become more important again. But it might have given Sony the needed time to work out the SW emu.

I got an80 gb model (MGS4 bundle) and I have an original ps2 with hd component video cables. So I couldn't care less for 40 and new 80gb owners. However, it would be great to be able to put a ps1 disc in the ps3 and then bak it up on the HDD. As if sony still had to make money over ps1 games.

yes software emulation is 100% possible because the XBOX 360 did it. Except, dont expect 100% full backwards compatible. Its foolish to abandon something that is a hit. The XBOX 360 have BC, the Wii has BC which, nowthe PS3 will ave BC too

though i have a 80 gb that is 70 to 80 percent comaptible with ps2 games
if one game ps2 game i eventually buy that doesn't work i can hope this emulator will make it work instead of having to buy a ps2 i never had a chacne to own but so far all of my ps2 games i got for my ps3 works

I dont understand I bought the ps3 60gig model in australia the only backwards for ps2 games was emulation sony didnt put the ps2 chip in ours.What im saying is the emulation software has been there since the release of the aus version last march I dont think they even know what thewre doing

This would be excellent if it did happen.
But in a way pointless if it doesn't include the ability to play PS1 games aswell. If there is a solution that i can get rid of my PS2 slim then i'd be happy. Come on Sony, make it happen.

I'm extremely happy with the progress Sony has been making lately.
