Hellblade Tips: How to Avoid Permadeath in Senua’s Sacrifice

PSLS: "Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is a great game, as evidenced by our review, but it does feature a threat of losing all your progress if you die too many times. Well, we played through the campaign ahead of release, and have a collection of tips that should help to make your trip to the underworld of Hel a bit more palatable. Who knows, you might even survive to see the ending of the game!"

Is this real or a lie to cause stress since this is a psychological experience...

Darkwatchman3200d ago

It's real. There is an actual contextual reason within the game for the whole pervades the system if you die too many times. It's not something I want to explain if you haven't played it yet, but early on in the game something happens which is the point at which the game will start tallying your deaths. It has an actual purpose within the game world so I'm 100% on board with it as this is a narrative driven experience and context is everything.

FullmetalRoyale3200d ago

That does sound better than "die too many times and it deletes your save file." I can get behind that.

Soulst0rmer3200d ago

Agreed. The initial reveal of this element was poorly handled by the media

kowan3200d ago (Edited 3200d ago )

Is it real? There's a video of someone testing it and they never lost anything and the rot on Senua never progressed despite dying 50 times.
https://youtu.be/JM3sxy21j3...
They likely just wanted to tension and fear to the players to make it more immersive as if experiencing the same things Senua is experiencing.

Soulst0rmer3200d ago

Dark,

Thanks! This answered my concern. Looking forward to this. I hope to check it out soon!

chris2353200d ago (Edited 3200d ago )

is this supposed to be the heritage that we got from these souls games? as a gamer i don't see the point for this kind of forced innovation. wallet closed. there are being more than enough games released every month. not going to buy frustration. thanks for nothing and the best of luck :P

Darkwatchman3200d ago

Read my reply to guy above you and you'll understand why it makes sense to implement it.

arkard3200d ago (Edited 3200d ago )

With that kind of thinking we might as well have stuck to games like Pacman and pong and never have innovated

slappy5083200d ago

Except this game has an easy mode so what ive played of it so far.. youve really gotta suck if you die too any times. Its actually not comparable at all to Souls excwpt for the atmosphere. And yes permadeath its a mechanic that fits with the game, everytime she dies the blight spreads in her arm and if it gets to her brain, well thats all she wrote

Nesflix3200d ago

Translation: You're not going to hold my hand and guide me through this heavily discounted ($29.99) gaming experience? No buy. *sucks thumb*

Just encourage a lot of people to play it on an overly easy setting and probably miss out on some playtime by rushing through.

Should of been an option to turn on/off or left for the higher difficulties.

Goldby3200d ago

its a mechanic that is built into the story telling and narrative.

would you like to also be able to shut off the mechanic where you lose all of your souls in dark souls?

Fishy Fingers3200d ago

Like I said, it just encourages me to play it on easy.

I don't have the amount of free time I used too. It's a cool mechanic (I didn't say anything to the contrary?) but it doesn't lend itself to my lifestyle these days and in all honesty if I had to restart when I was close to completion I'd probably go play something else. I'd rather play as many as I can in the time I have.

LAWSON723200d ago

Just stop comparing this to DkS, losing Souls is childs play compared to restarting a 6-8 hr long linear game

Goldby3200d ago

@Lawson

im comparing it to that because that mechanic, is built into the narrative of the game. if you have a better example of a mechanic that punishes you that is built into the narrative please feel free to add it

rdgneoz33200d ago

"would you like to also be able to shut off the mechanic where you lose all of your souls in dark souls?"

You lose currency in the the souls series, not your entire playthrough. And seeing as they never put it in the store description for the game, gonna guess not everyone knows about it / will be too happy if they have to start a new game.

Goldby3200d ago

@rdgneoz3

its built into the story so people will be informed of it during their playthrough.

again, it is just a mechanic, no different than most mechanics built into games. you dont see first person shooters putting on their cases that yuo will be requiring ammunition to fire your guns, or in a game like skyrim/fallout, that you should be making multiple save files incase you save at the wrong spot and start a death loop.

Is it inconvenient, for some people yes, is it required? no. is it a nice touch that adds more to the game, absolutely

I understand there are some folks that like to be punished & there some folks that don't like that type of frustration therefore this should be an option.I don't like it so I'll save my money for Matterfall next week then Uncharted the next & buy this maybe months from now when it's cheaper.

LAWSON723200d ago

I should not need tips, and I will play this totally blind. If I lose 6 hrs of my time I will say 'this game is terrible' and move on.

Goldby3200d ago

if you die soo much that your file is erased, its not the game. it may be that the combat style of the game isn't you cup of tea.

but to call it terrible because you died over an over isn't the right way to judge it

LAWSON723200d ago

I will call it terrible if I run into a spot where the game was not self explanatory and I die so many times I have to restart 6 hrs. I would actually call it trash and a poorly designed video game.

Goldby3200d ago

so would you also call skyrim or fallout terrible if you save just before you die, and dont have any extra save files.

Because it wasn't explained to you that if you dont make multiple saves, you may screw yourself in a death loop?

This game isn't for people who want their hand held moment to moment. seems like its not a game for you

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice Review | What's It Like In 2024?

Admittedly, Hellblade: Senua's Saga is far from perfect and won't be a game for everyone, but now with a multitude of accessibility options it has made itself much more palatable for a wider audience, and with constant sale prices between $2-$4, Hellblade: Senua's Saga is too good to pass up for a unique experience that has stood the test of time and will do so once more with its even more robust and epic sequel.

The only thing epic about this “game” is how longnit took to make.

90sGamingWasBetter604d ago

The Hellblade games looked nice but they were essentially walking simulators with a minimal amount of combat tracked on.

willykyu276d ago

At long last, it’s about time they upgraded it !
I didn’t like hellblade 2 at all, which lost all its mystery and originality in this graphically superb but extremely boring sequel. But I loved the first one. And I was pretty annoyed it was stuck on ps4 version on ps5. Bugs and didn’t run that well.
Now I’m going to play it all over again !!! In its nicest version on PlayStation.
