Is Destiny 2 a Worthy Sequel?

Today on The Xbox Dive, Chris and James played the Destiny 2 Beta and want to share their thoughts. Is this a true sequel experience to the first game? Does it live up the hype or expectation? You also can't miss Chris, the Non-Destiny gamer, try to explain what's happening. It will both infuriate and entertain you. #FlyingCruiseShips

I never played Destiny 1 beyond the beta, but the morw I see of Destiny 2, the more hyped I get for it!

Jinger3228d ago (Edited 3228d ago )

Of course it is. People expecting the game to change in a drastic manner obviously don't know what a sequel means.

thorstein3227d ago

Not sure what you mean. Destiny always had great gunplay and maps (both campaign and MP). I never complained too much about the story, but what story there was should matter, shouldn't it?

Didn't we beat back the Darkness and are now able to spread out beyond or into the Solar System?

A proper Destiny sequel would have players freeing up Old Earth and moving on to establish colonies on other worlds and moons of the solar system.

But, people still have a right to be a bit perturbed. I bought the original expecting to fight on the moons of Jupiter (since Jupiter was on the original map) but that never happened.

Is the new story a continuation of any of that? It doesn't seem to be. And what about the Lords of Iron (quite possibly the best of the story)?

Nesflix3227d ago

Please see Witcher 2 and 3. Those were sequels and each game built on the last in the best way possible. Just because it's a sequel doesn't mean you get to be a lazy developer. Nothing about Destiny 2 screams $60. In fact, it screams expansion. Saying one is a shooter and the other an RPG isn't an excuse.

But who knows? I've only played the BETA. Maybe the full release will feel much newer.

Jinger3227d ago

So completely new story, new guns, new modes, new subclasses, new everything with as much content promised as the first game and its expansions.... but no its just an expansion, right? The only real difference between witcher 2 and 3 is that it went open world. Otherwise everything else was slightly dumbed down.

jugo143227d ago

perfect example. The witcher greatly improved upon each sequel. Fanboys will eat any shit bungie throws at them. Its ridiculous. Destiny 2 is not a worthy successor at all. Its worse than D1 in almost every way.

Jinger3227d ago

@Jugo

While Witcher 3 is an amazing game, it actually dumbed down quite a bit of its RPG elements... You can see the progression of it becoming more of just an action game if you played the entire series. The reason it feels different is because it went open world, besides that almost all the other elements are similar if not slightly streamlined.

Nesflix3227d ago

@Jawes

Every Destiny 1 expansion came with a completely new story, new guns and new subclasses were introduced. Thank you for making my point.

Also, The Witcher series improved the graphics engine with every iteration, improved combat with every iteration, added open world with the last, improved on story with every iteration and gave you content in their expansion worthy of its own game. If you're a fan I understand but don't be blind. I played Destiny 1 and had a GREAT time with my buddies. We played through every expansion except for the last. I had a blast. After playing Destiny 2 I can say not much has changed, feels way too familiar and I can't justify paying $60 for it. I'm glad you feel your money is justified. Good on you, man.

Krysis3227d ago (Edited 3227d ago )

So you have not played the witcher series. And you are also talking about graphics, well the game spanned different generations of consoles of course they got better.

Nesflix3227d ago

@Krysis

I've played every Witcher. I'm not sure where your misunderstanding is.

Destiny was released on last generation consoles and current generation consoles. Did you see Witcher 3's graphical upgrade from Witcher 2 on Playstation 3 to Witcher 3 on Playstation 4? It's HUGE. Or are you trying to say the Playstation 4, Playstation 4 Pro, Xbox One and Xbox One X can't handle a graphical upgrade for Destiny 2? Come on, man. Who are you kidding?

My opinion is solely based on the BETA. Again, if the game comes out and it does great with consumers and reviewers then I'll definitely pick it up and enjoy it probably as much as I did Destiny 1. So far NOTHING I've seen in the BETA is telling me I should buy this game on release and for $60.

Honestly, it's impossible to say at this point. Bungie are deliberately playing it coy in terms of giving out info. The lack of new classes is a little disappointing but the mission and strike that was available in the beta were both top notch. If Bungie can maintain that level of standard throughout the playing experience while simultaneously delivering on the content on day one this time around, then it will be a worthy sequel.

neolego3227d ago

Great point PapaBop. We probably won't really know the value of Destiny 2 until a year into release. Bungie has said from the beginning that Destiny will be a constantly evolving brand. Just like Destiny 1, we will probably not see the best parts of this game for months to come. So, as long as the combat stays stellar, hopefully the single player content will hold us over until then.

joab7773227d ago

We don't know yet!! But for anyone interested, go to IGN and look at everything that has been added, from a long campaign that is story driven, to various open world activities etc. The beta was a networking test and didn't offer much to entice anyone to buy it, unless you lived D1's PvP. And then you probably have issues with that!

I think it will be worth the money and more just because of campaign and the many additional to core gameplay.

neolego3227d ago

That is an accurate statement. Thank you.

Honestly Thank Goodness!! Yet another good sign of a possibility of returning to what made them great and undoing Jim Tyans trend chasing love service gamble. Still gotta wait and see just what direction they're going but this is a good sign in my book that they're not betting it all on live service anymore

S2Killinit116d ago (Edited 116d ago )

Not sure what you lot are talking about anymore. They need to cover all range of games. Im primarily a single player gamer, but even I cannot be daft enough to ignore the fact that we need all manner of games including live service games. Everyone here seems to be a market expert.

isarai_lee116d ago (Edited 116d ago )

Yes "all manner" not just exclusively live service like Jim was doing, but you also shouldn't be forcing devs to make games they not only have no experience making, but also flatout dont want to do.

S2Killinit116d ago

Assuming that anything like that is actually the case and not just a perception of n4g commenters of course.

Redemption-64116d ago

@isarai_lee

I don't understand why you people have to keep making up lies. You can say you don't like some or most of their focus being on live service games, but to say they were exclusively focusing on live service games is pure copium. At most half of their games were live service and the rest were single player games. Seriously why lie about something so obvious?

isarai_lee115d ago

@Redemption-64

You say that as if we don't have word directly from Jim Ryan and PlayStation stating they wanted at least 12 live service games released within a year. Followed by tons of official word of those Live Service games being cancelled after he was pushed out. All studios combined at the time PS had 15 studios, 12 is a hell of a lot more than half of 15, and it was definitely their primary focus evident by the fact that a huge portion of their studios have taken uncharacteristically long to release or announce anything since, hell some studios have yet to release anything this gen almost 6 YEARS LATER! The only one making stuff up is you.

It may take a while but maybe they are finally learning. Good! Now stop with the live service crap.

ABizzel1116d ago

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a live service here or there, but to have many of your studios start focusing on it when there has been little to no experience among them was wild.

Christopher116d ago (Edited 116d ago )

They say this and then immediately release news of the Horizons co-op game that will definitely be a Live Service game.

isarai_lee116d ago

I feel like they knew that given the fact that the very furst thing they say in the trailer is to reassure they still make so games 😆

vTuro24116d ago

Bet they're regrettings spending those billions pretty hard right now.

S2Killinit116d ago

Destiny has been a huge success.

Redemption-64116d ago

They will not. Destiny has been popular for over 10 years, something most games can never hope to achieve. Most people, including myself those Bungie was going to make a D3 after the final shape DLC. Marathon looks to be a hit and a D3 announcement could break records.
