Yet it all started so well as Thunder Lotus’ latest game looked to add its own twist to a thriving metroidvania genre. In some aspects it succeeds while in others it doesn’t quite measure up to similar titles."

There’s a lot to love about Metroidvania games, from the original Metroid and Castlevania entries to some of the subgenre’s more compelling entries on PS4 and other more recent systems. While there…
Love the newest Strider! Definitely underrated.
Love these lists as i now want to check out Momodora (on PS extra) and Ender Lillies.

The Humble Plug in and Play Digital Bundle just launched today. It features TT Isle of Man, Sundered, WRC 8, Tennis World Tour, and more. As usual, you pay what you want. A percentage goes to support the charity Doctors Without Borders.

Sundered: Eldritch Edition is free at Epic Games Store starting today at 10 AM. It is free until January 16. Once you claim it, it's yours to keep.

As a disclaimer id like to start with I HATE randomly generated levels in any game.
I found Sundered to be utterly enjoyable and love the mechanics at play.
At first, I was confused as to where to go and what to do and since I knew before hand that the levels were randomly generated I thought this would all be one mindless exercise in futility. Another Metrovania disguised as a Dark SOuls wanna-be.
Well, I can tell you my preconceived notions were put to rest.
Sundered gives you the tools that you need to make decisions as to where you want to go.
You know where your objective is because there is a marker that tells you so. So all you have to do is figure the best path to this location.
Now it is true that there is a level of randomness, but not as you would think. Major rooms, rooms with abilities, shards, weapons...etc once discovered will ALWAYS be in the same area. think of them as markers along the highway. What changes are the adjoining rooms. You know they are there because you've discovered them once before, but once you die the layout of those rooms changes slightly. So you see, there is no frustration setting in because the entire dungeon has been reworked every time you perish.
The game lends itself to exploration because you can traverse quite freely and nicely throughout even with you beginning skills. Just like Metroid or Castlevania, you may arrive at a location that needs you to have another ability. In this case, explore. There are not difficult to find at all. It's simply a matter of getting to them.
When you die, you keep what you've earned in terms of experience and you have an extensive skill tree in which to make your character stronger. And you will become stronger and be able to dispatch those pesky brutes much quicker, faster and get to where you want to go in a jiffy.
So we come to the hordes. This is a marker just like everything else in this game.
Linger too long you get a little battle, no biggie. but as you approach one of the rooms we described before, the special rooms. They give you a walloping. Or if you activate special loot rooms, prepare to fight. Personally, I consider these to be markers to me as to whether or not I am ready to proceed and that's how it felt.
Once you are able to beat the horde and proceed you know you earned it. Just like Dark Souls. BUt unlike Dark Souls you keep what you earned, fix your character based on what you feel you need and proceed.
the randomness of the levels is a non-issue, the hordes don't really matter since there is no penalty to your death and you can get to where you want to go rather quickly. Even boss fights are there for you to tackle when you feel ready.
As far as Metrovania games go, I find this one to be one of the best ones I've played.
One big problem is the crashing (on PS4). I'm sure they'll patch it, but when you are loading (and that also takes up quite a bit of time) there is a 30% chance it may crash on you. At least that's been my experience.
Still, even with that. I can't stop playing this game.
