How Much Does Single Player Matter?

Talk Xbox writes: "It doesn't take a genius to realize that games have really altered over the years. Making transitions from 2D to 3D, the creation of several genres and taking explicit content to a whole new level are just some of these changes. There are also shifts that aren't as easy to notice. One of these is the single player section. Playing solo might have been the real deal ten years ago, but it's slowly become an afterthought for developers and gamers.

Could this be a sign that the single player portion of gaming will eventually fizzle or is there still life left for the solo-oriented mode(s)?"

It is cheaper to develop an online multiplayer mode than to develop a long single player campaign. Personally, I care much more for the single player campaign, but it seems I am minority right now.

The-Director6359d ago

no your not a minority , single player do matter very much for me and I'm sure for a lot of people .

that doesn't mean that i don't really enjoy a good multiplayer .

Bob Dole6359d ago

Bob Dole is with ya. He didn't like the online aspect of the Halo series but loved the single player co-op.

SeNiLe9116359d ago

I have many friends that don't like the online aspect of gaming. I think it's more getting Pwned then anything. They just can't keep up with real people, only AI.

FAQS6359d ago

Q:...
A: Completly agree! I really give more interess at the Single Player Mode, although I spent more time in multiplayer modes whith my friends or on-line in certain games... But I think the Story mode gives to us the real soul of the game!

cyax6359d ago

I fully agree with you. Co-op tying in with the single player experience is a great feature, whether it's offline or online.

callahan096359d ago

You're correct.

I, too, personally prefer single-player campaign experiences. They're the types of games I grew up playing. I also grew up playing Mario Kart and Street Fighter against my brother, but the vast majority of my favorite gaming experiences have been single-player or take-turns oriented.

Final_Rpg6359d ago

You're not a minority pal.:) Trust me.

Online should come after single player experience, not before... But at the same time, if developers are planning on doing a less than satisfactory and forced single player I'd prefer they keep it Online only, same goes the other way as well.

beavis4play6359d ago (Edited 6359d ago )

i love single player games. to be immersed in a great story with wonderful graphics. (uncharted, bioshock, ratchet, mass effect, kingdom hearts, MGS, god of war....etc...) co-op is imp. as well, but if single player mode were to be abandoned by developers.......i'd quit gaming.

lordgodalming6359d ago

All this love for single player games or game components shows just how mistaken this article is. It seems like most of the dislike for single player comes from reviewers, who complain that a game "doesn't have $60 legs" if single player is the game's main focus.

TrenchaunT6359d ago

I agree. In fact, I usually hate playing multiplayer before I beat the single player, and sometimes I just don't feel like playing with other people. Plus, as a long time RPG fan, a good storyline really matters to me, and you just can't have good storyline in a multiplayer-only game.

Tarasque6359d ago

I like single player sure, but i will not buy a single player only game( let me rephrase that ). I will not buy a short single player game. I rent every single player game that has no multiplayer. For most single player games there is no reply value at all. You are only going to more than likely play through it just one time. And as games keep getting shorter and shorter.......Well i will continue to rent.

peowpeow6359d ago (Edited 6359d ago )

To me Co-op campaign > Single Player campaign > multiplayer (deathmatch type games).

I enjoy multiplayer games but there's just a certain amount of fun you can get, although that fun never dies.
In single player campaign you get the full experience and enjoyment, which is usually connected to the element of surprise, meaning it's best for a 1-time playthrough.
Co-op is just like singleplayer but you get that feeling if being with a real human whilst playing which lets you enjoy it even further and also adds alot of replayability

Edit: (Singleplayer) And that's where games with branched stories and RPGs come in. That's why im really hyped for Fable 2, it's an RPG that can be played with a friend co-op, online and offline, giving you that great experience!

SL1M DADDY6359d ago

You are not in the minority, it's just that the minority that likes the MP more than a single player campaign is a bit more vocal. You know how it is, the squeaky wheel get the oil and too often it happens to be the majority that gets shafted due to the grips of the minority.

I love single player campaigns.

dantesparda6359d ago

I do not like games that only have multiplayer. I always beat or play the single player mode first before i'll even touch the multiplayer. And half the time, barely even end up playing the multiplayer mode. To me online deathmatches are just getting to mindless and repetitive. I mean its just run out there and shoot, shoot, shoot, then die, and do it all over again and again and again. After 30 to 50 games of that same sh1t, it gets kind of boring, same old sh1t to me. Dont get me wrong, i dont hate multiplayer, but multiplayer online is way too shallow for me. If gaming goes the route of multiplayer only, than Im outta gaming too.

BattleAxe6359d ago

Single player campaigns have been so good this generation that I'd be disappointed if they didn't have a single player game eg:Socom: Confrontation.

Single Player Campaigns that I really enjoyed this generation:

- The Darkness
- Metal Gear Solid 4
- Rainbow Six Vegas
- Rainbow Six Vegas 2
- Call of Duty 4
- Call of Duty 3
- Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2
- Resistance: Fall of Man

Single player games that I was disappointed in this generation:

- Medal of Honor: Airborne
- BattleField: Bad Company
- Grand Theft Auto 4
- Soldier of Fortune: Payback
- John Woo's: Stranglehold

staub916359d ago

You can get Resistance 2 and get everything...

Insomniac rules.

Ateanboy6359d ago

No...

Story mode is the better of the two, but I DO spend more time online...

But Story/Campaign mode has always been and will always be the better mode of the two.

himdeel6359d ago

...I absolutely love single player games and HATE when online or multiplayer is thrown in a game just for the hell of it. Single player games are fantastic because I enjoy the stories.

It's the single player games that remind me why I've had so much fun with video games. Single player games have been my pleasure every since the first time I made Harry jump in Pitfall.

I'd prefer more single player games. Multiplayer games will always have their place but it's the single player games that keep me coming back.

thisguywithhair6359d ago

I find that the only games that I have ever played in multiplayer for any amount of time are games that I have really enjoyed the single player experience. Guitar Hero: Areosmith, Call of Duty 4,and Tiger Woods '09 are the only games that I have spent more than a few game in multiplayer and that is because I was able to fully enjoy the single player game so that i felt that i was ready to compete against other players.

Some games I have played seem to have a single player just for the practice of multiplayer. It seems tacked on and less than an afterthought. When that happens I feel that I have wasted my money and end of exchanging the game for something that I know I will play again.

P.S. - The only games that I have more played and beaten more than 5 times are Metal Gear Solid 4 and Uncharted and Uncharted doesn't even have a multiplayer.

Which means i like a good campaign. But i also like a good multiplayer. I think that a campaign is more important but nowadays if it doesn't have multiplayer Its hard for me to buy. Thats why i like resistance so much. It has an amazing campaign really intriguing story...and once you've finished it you can take it online. All games should have a long and interesting campaign topped off with a solid online competitive multiplayer if possible.

coolfool6359d ago

It isn't so good if the solo campaign has to suffer just to squeeze an online component in there. I personally think that the solo campaign and story should always be the number 1 priority and multiplayer is the added bonus. Unfortunately as multiplayer gets bigger the single player seems to get smaller.

Would bioshock or uncharted be as good if the devs tried to squeeze in multiplayer components? Maybe, but only with delays.

shelbygt336359d ago

Well, I don't know - single player in CoD4 was "ok", but it's worth the $60 due to the multiplayer. If, however, multiplayer sucked than it'd be ripoff at $60.

Seriously - in a few years we'll be paying close to $100/game. That's outrageous.

vickers5006359d ago

Story should NOT be the number one priority. They should pay equal attention to both multi-player and single player. Unless it is only a game that can possibly single player (heavenly sword) or multiplayer (warhawk). Personally, I prefer multiplayer. It prolongs a game purchase, and I get to play with friends, which to me, adds loads of replay value.

n9com6359d ago

Games are moving with the times - people want multiplayer, and that's what they are getting.

P4KY B6359d ago

but you need a good story first so you can bond with the characters.

Take Gears of War as an example, people really care about who they play as in MP.

mfwahwah6359d ago

Really? Last time I checked, there were more epic SP games then MP games.

This counts games being released up until November '09.

SaiyanFury6359d ago

The single player game still matters a great deal. This is true with fans of RPGs, which number a great deal. Not to mention, even with people like me, who play FPS games, we play for the story. I never play online, nor do I ever care for online gaming. I grew up on consoles during the 80s, 90s, and into the 21st century. Most of the games on those consoles were focused almost exclusively on a single player experience with 2 player as a second note. This was most common in fighting games. No doubt online multiplayer is important to people but the single player experience is every bit as important. People who want to be part of a story, not just running around where everyone kills each other with no other purpose. I'm one of the people who prefers to experience a great and inventive story, not one who runs around killing everything in sight.

Official General6359d ago

I totally agree with you to the fullest, you said everything that I was gonna say pretty much. I've been gaming since the late 1980s into the 1990s and the 21st century, and I have always preferred to play single-player video games. An excellent, fun, action-packed, intriguing and immersive story-driven single-player game is the best kind of video gaming experience in my view. My most favorite games have been mostly single-player titles like the GTA and Metal Solid series, Unchartered, Jak and Daxter, Syphon Filter and believe it or not, I really enjoyed playing the classic top first-person shooters (Doom, Medal of Honour, COD4) in single campaign mode. I enjoy playing Pro Evolution Soccer in single-player Master League mode just as much as I do playing against friends.

I'm not at all a big fan of all this multi-player, co-op, online gaming stuff thats the craze these in the industry these days. I will play these kind of games if I feel I like it, but it is certainly NOT essential to me to enjoy a game. The only game online/multiplayer I have ever enjoyed and really liked is COD4 (which is serious fun I admit), but I cannot see myself increasing my interest in this area that much. Similar to what SaiyanFury said, I think running around various environments and shooting and killing people all the time for no real purpose aside gaining rankings and scores will soon enough prove a little bit boring and repetitive for me.

I do believe good multiplayer/online features are very cool to have in a game but they should be a secondary priority for most games that are clearly geared towards single-player games. I believe only selected handful of games like certain FPS's, fighting and sports games should have multi-player/online priorities as primary features. I am totally against game developers trying to make every game these days have an essential need for multi-player/online features, it's just getting too much and stifling the development of what could be solid, single-player titles.

Anyways thats my two pence thrown in and I'm out!

INehalemEXI6359d ago (Edited 6359d ago )

I agree, and if Warhawk had a killer SP Campaign along with its excellent MP it would of been GoTY IMO.

SaiyanFury6359d ago

Yeah I know what you guys mean. I didn't mean to come off as saying I didn't like FPS games. There are a few really good ones that I enjoy that have awesome stories. Resistance: Fall of Man, BioShock, and Half-Life 2 are my favourite games. I just don't have a lot of interest in playing games online. I'm glad that so many people get so much enjoyment out of playing online and playing with friends. It's just not something I've found enjoyable. All I wanted to say, that people obviously picked up on, was that a good story matters every bit as much as playing with other people.

I'm 50/50 I guess. I do enjoy a good multiplayer experience but I also love the intimacy of a single player campaign. Co-op is also great as it merges the two.

But the recent trend of primarily focussing on MP then tacking on a half arsed campaign doesn't really cut it with me. If your going to include something, I believe it should be made to the best of your ability.
